Returning to this camp
he interested Wm. Bunting in
his find and the latter has spent
the past two months there, lending his 30 years of experience
and practical hard-rock knowledge to the task of tracing out
and thoroughly sampling the
vein. This was a comparatively
easy matter, as the property lies
above timber line, at an elevation of 4500 feet, and carries no
overburden; in fact the outcrop-
pings of the vein may be seen
for a distance of 6000 feet, striking east and west and lying on a
granite and lime contact.
Seventy-five open cuts have
been made across the vein, and
one shaft sunk to a depth of 53
feet. The ore throught is an
iron-stained, more er less decomposed quartz, carrying no other
metal than gold, except for some
black iron sulphides and occasionally a trace of copper. Barrett and associates, financial men and promoters of Vancouver, discussed with the people of Stewart and
Hyder the idea of putting new life into
the Portland Canal Short Line Railway.
Fourteen miles of this was built up the
Bear river valley from tidewater in 1911
by Sir Donald Mann, it being his intention
at that time to continue the road through
to the Peace River country, making Stewart a transcontinental terminal. This project, which bristles even yet with great
possibilities, unfortunately died a more or
less natural death, with the financial slump
that hit the country in the fall of 1912,
preceeding the World War by nearly two
years, both of which combined to make development work of this kind impossible,
and which also assisted in virtually ending
the brilliant career of Sir Donald Mann
and Sir William MacKenzie as railway
builders.
Now, however, that the country is
rapidly returning to normal, resulting in
increased development ln this north country, it is only to be expected that there are
many people who can realize the great
possibilities of this project and that one
of these, as appears to be the ease with
Mr. Barrett, will have the pluck and the
courage to try and put the idea into effect.
The preliminary to this, of course, is the
acquisition of the present rusting road,
and its charter, with all its original rights.'
Naturally, these people will not be
able to build the road themselves, from
here to Peace River, but what they maybe
able to do is to secure the present road and
charter, recondition, and operate a gas
engine train over it from the beach to
Bitter ereek at least once a week, until
such time as the business warrants an improved service. Such a railway would
without doubt secure considerable business at the outset from the deyelopment
of mining properties up the valley, and in
addition from hauling freight and concentrates for the Dunwell mine, thus enabling
the operation of a better service than once
a week to as far at least as Glacier creek.
Such a move would quicken the development of the whole Bear river section, constituting a great encouragement to the
development and operation of a number of
important properties along the full extent
of the Bear river, thus in a short time carrying the road to its summit, and shortly
afterwards over it. Thus would be opened the whole of the upper Naas, From
this point it would only be, from a railway
standpoint, an easy matter to extend the
line 60 miles or less to the great Groundhog anthracite coalfields. This would then
have carried the road 90 of the 250 milea
from tidewater to the western edge of the
Peace River wheat belt, thereby leaving a
link to be connected of only 160 miles to
be built, to tap those great wheat areas,
opening to development, tributary and along its
route, a country fabulously rich in minerals, coal,
timber and landwilnout doubt the richest continuous section in this rich province.
These are the possibilities which Mr Barrett
and his people evidently plainly see, and seeing*
them know full well that if they can secure the
road and its charter, and get the project started,
it would be only a short time until they would be
able to make some successful deal for the financing ef it to completion by possibly selling it te one
or another of the big companies, or by some other
method. However, so far as the people of Stewart are concerned, it matters not how the railway
is secured and operated, so long as action is obtained.
DALBY a MORKHiL
WNHfO SUBVEYOB
B. C.
