The whole of British Columbia is going"
to witness a tremendous development and vast sums of
money will be spent. The Pacific province has caught
the eye and ear of the financial world and genuine prepositions are being sought. But the proportion of interest attracted to each town and district will depend on
the enterprise and public spiritedness shown by its citizens. Stewart's history is sliort as yet. It has had good
years and dull, but the hills give greater promise than
ever before, the great Premier mine has disproven all
geological theories concerning the formation of the country and its possibilities. Mining men all over America
are turning there attention to this district and more real
development will be undertaken this year than at any
time in previous years. The mines will make Stewart a
good town but it is significant to note the attention that
is being given to its greater possibilities as a port. In its
geographical position Stewart is not surpassed by any
port on the coast. It is the most northern port with a
perfectly safe harbor, and nearest to the ports of Japan
and AsiaticRussia except Prince Rupert. The superstition .
that the northlands of America and Asia are uninhabitable and barren is long out worn. It is not doubted now
each will contribute to the wealth of the nations to an
extent hitherto undreamt of. The trade of the North Pac-
ific will rival that of the North Atlantic before the twentieth century has run h? If its course. Of this trade Stewart must have a large share. FRASER
The members of the B. C.
branch of the Canadian Institute
of Mining and Metallurgy were'
: treated to a very interesting talk j
on the ore and formation of the |
deposits of the Stewart country!
by Dr Schofield of the University
of B. C. at a luncheon yesterday.!
While a large part of his address
dealt in technical terms with the!
cropping of the ore, the speaker
gave a number of interesting de-!
tails which he had found out'
during his tour of that country
last summer.
The junction of Portland Canal and Observatory Inlet forms
the eastern mfneral belt of the
coast he stated. The ore ot the
Salmon River country is contained in quartz out of a volcanic formation and the rocks are well exposed, typical of the northern interior country. This summer Dr.
Schofield stated, would see many
propectors going into the country
and prospects for discovering
ore are exceedingly bright.
Taking the Premier Mfne as an
example, the speaker stated that
the ore contained gold and native
silver, the latter running as high
as 1000 ounces to the tori. The native silver he continued, is a secondary mineral, but the higher
values of the ore go down much
deeper and it seems that blocks
in the mine have dropped down
and in some cases been shifted
30 feet from their original positions, The silver is not found in
a continual run, but in intermittent shoots. The primary ore contains from $35 to $100 worth of
silver to the ton.
The speaker was asked a number of questions after his address
and was cordially thanked for
his talk. It is expected that Dr.
Schofield will visit the Portland
Canal district again this summer.Vancouver World
Canadian National Railiuaus
GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC Ry.
Steamers sailing between Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver, Ocean Falls,
Swanson's Bay, Prince Itupert, Anyox, Stewart and Queen Charlotte
Islands.
SAILINGS from PRINCE RUPERT-
THURSDAYS at 12 MIDNIGHT fop SWAN SON BAY, OCEAN
FALL8, VANCOUVER, VICTORIA and 8EATTLE
Leaves Prince Rupert for Stewart, 10 p. m. P
Stewart,
Look at the map of British Columbia
with an unbiased mind. Roughly Vancouver is 800 miles from the same
point in the Peace River country that
is reached in 400 miles from Stewart,
which is the natural outlet for the
whole northern and eastern interior.
Nearly every settler in the Peace
River district is talking of railway
communication with the coast.
Speaking in broad terms there are
thirty-two millions of acres of the
Peace River district situated within the
boundaries of British Columbia, and
more than forty millions of acres within the Province of Alberta, most of it
being suitable agricultural land for
mixed farming or. ranching. In addition there is a vast area of mineral and
timber resources, the extent of which is
only beginning to be realized.
Immense deposits of anthracite ioal
have been located and the president of
the Peace River Board of Trade is
authority for the statement that this
coal grades higher than Pennsylvania
coal.
Extensive exploration work is ln'ing
carried on in connection with oil and
already startling results have leen ob
tained. The oil sands are located at a
depth of about sixteen hundred feet
and enough investigation has taken
place to be assured that they are of
wonderful extent. There is also an
abundance of natural gas.
The araa under cultivation at present
is only about three hundred thousand
acres and the population of the whole
district is about twenty thousand. The
first grain was sent out of the country
three years ago, and consisted of less
than one thousand bushels. Last year
nine million bushels were produced from
abeut a quarter million acres, the average wheat yield being thirty-five bushels to the acre or nearly double the
average of other portions of Alberta.
The land is also well adapted for the
raising of stock of all kinds, particularly hogs.
lt is reasonable to suppose that if
two hundred and fifty thousand acres
are now producing nine million bushels
of grain, that vVithin a very few years
there will be ten million aerea producing three hundred and fifty million bushels of grain, or roughly, ten million
tons.
.
