The original chart comprises
the whole of Vancouver Island. We givo here, however, only that part
of it which represents " Le Fuea Strait and the Rosario Channel,*' so as
they were surveyed and explored in the year 1791, by the Spanish Navigator Eliza. In the title of the chart, translated into English, is stated
the following;— ! _
"A chart which contains the interior and turning of the coast
" from 48 deg. to 50 deg. N. L., scrupulously examined by the Lieu-
«tenant of the Navy Don Francisco Eliza, Commander of the pocket-
" boat of his Majesty 'San Carlos' and of the galliot' Sta Saturnina'
" (alias 'La Orcasitas1). And the lately made discovery of the
" Great Channel of Nuestra Senora del ltosario, Longitude of the
** Meridian of S. Bias, and after the newest Astronomical Observa-
"tion, made in this port of Santa Crux de Nuca (Naotate) la thin
" year of 1791, by the Captain of the Navy Don Alexander Malaspina.
« All those reconnoitrings were made in this year 1791/*
From this we see that the chart pretends to have been made in the
year 1791, and to represent the surveys and discoveries of Don Francisco
Eliza; and of the truth of this statement it le easy to convince us by a
comparison of the dates and names given on the .short with the dates
and names given in the reports on Elisa's Exploration in the Journal
of the Spanish voyage to these regions tinder Yaldes and Galiano (1793).
Everything that we learn from this report agrees with what we see
depicted on the chart, which is very accurately drawn, and which le
either the very chart made by Eliza himself, or at least a true copy
of it. '
The chart is so very interesting and valuable because we see the discoveries of Eliza so minutely depicted on it. Eliza was the first who
penetrated into the Rosario Channel—the first who gave this and many
other names. We have no special journal of hie voyage; we possess
only the scattered allusions to bis expedition in the said work of Galiano
aud Yaldes. I have also never seen before his chart, nor ever heard it
alluded to. I believe it was perfectly unknown to all the historians of
the north-western discoveries.
Eliza penetrated nearly to the central part of the great Gulf of Georgia.
Bis names were nearly all adopted and preserved by his successors,
Galiano and Yaldes, in the year 1792; and we shall meet them again on
the chart of these navigators.
