Already a
large number of horses are here
fitting for the races and many
fifom outside towns have signified their intentions of being
present and competing for the
liberal purses offered. An excellent programme has been
piovided and elaborate preparations are being made for
carrying it out satisfactorily,
The base ball matches will
be a great attraction. In the
afternoon a match will be play
ed between Phoenix and Grand
Forks and as both these towns
have good teams the result will
be watched with interest,
Later in tho day the winning
team will play Greenwood.
Greenwood, Grand Forks,
Phoenix and Eholt will each
ebfttriHtttir 11 large number of
visitors, as this is the only attraction in the Boundary
country that day, and if the
weather be fine there will be
tho largest crowd ever in the
town
The race track has been put
in perfect condition, there being
just enough rain of late to
obtain this result.
Sunday is Victoria day, but
Monday will be observed in
order to mark the day. School
will be closed so as to provide
the children a holiday, and they
huve not been forgotten in the
arrangement of the programme
as sports for the little ones are
therein provided.
The Greenwood Citizens'
Band will furnish music and
thus assist in perfecting the celebration, as no celebration is
complete without a band.
The C. J. Hill, of the
Great Northern said: "We
shall extend the spur to the
Granby smelter at once, lt is
also our purpose to build to
Phoenix and into the Similkameen.
I am not prepared now to say
I how soon we shall extend the
line to Phoenix. But we must
develop that northern territory.
They need coke. There is line
coking coal in the Crow's Nest
and we have a fine road there
now. We are ready to haul the
coal and coke, but it has to be
made first.
We are going to extend two
branches up north. We will
build into the Okanagan
country and the Similkameen.
Yes, it is the V. Following the finding of telluride ore in tho Lancashire fraction some weeks
ago by the E. P. U. Mines company, similiar ore was last week
met with in a 30 foot prospect
shaft on the Dynamo, owned by
Portmau Bros., of the Elkhorn
brewery. On the Golfincli, too,
this ore has been found and'
there are indications of it iu a
quartz lead lately uncovered on
the Barbara. Farther away
about two miles from the town,
two quartz leads are being prospected on the Dandy, assay returns giving higher values in
gold and silver than are usually
obtained from surface rock.
The Mother Lode mine is easily keeping ahead of tho ore requirements of two furnaces at
the Greenwood smelter. MAY 23, IMS.
REPORT OF DELEGATES TO
OTTAWA.
In this report it is stated that
the British Columbia government, has constructed 600 miles
ofroadnta cost of $12,000,000,
and 5000 miles of trails at a cost
of $1,000,000. "Few of these
roads can be considered as finished roads. They are, as a rule,
nine or ten feet wide, simply
graded roughly, and constantly
being repaired and improved,
There are also numerous bridges and culverts to be construct
ed which are very expensive indeed." This makes tho average
cost per inile for roads throughout the province $2,000. In
East Yale the cost of some
roads under construction, according to the report, is $1,700 per
mile. $12,000,000 is a large sum
of money for even the public,
works department, the great
spending department. These
figures were prepared by the
government engineers and aro.
it is stated, well within thc
mark. The British Columbia
government is troubled with deficits, and though large loans
are made from time to time, is
not able, to furnish public works
when and where they are needed. This is a serious state of
ai Fairs, and it might be well for
the government to devise some
more economical system in the
construction of public works, ii'
that be possible. Perfection, of
course, is not expected and cannot be attained: but the people have a right to expect from
thoir representatives and officials a reasonable degree of foresight and prudence, such as the
average person uses in the con
duct of his private affairs. We
aro not, of course, familiar with
the cost of public works
throughout the province, but
know something about the cost
in East Yale, and judging from
the figures contained iu the public accounts, they are about the
same, on an average, here as
elsewhere, aud we have a well-
grounded suspicion that, under
a better system, several-millions
■of dollars could be deducted
from $12,000,000, in fact, we believe it could be divided by two.
P. This land,
as everyone knows, is good, had
and indifferent in quality.
S une of it is very valuable, and
agreattle.il of it is valueless,
In the land Act it is classified
into two kinds of agricultural
lands and mountain or range
lands, and the price to purchasers from the governnient is from
ono to live dollars, according to
quality, Along the line of the
Ooiumbia & Western railroad
the greater part of the lands of
any value have been purchased
or pre-empted. On
the farm there are the kicking
cow and our friend, the mule,
while in the town there is the
old mossback who wants all the
privileges of the municipal living without paying for them
and blocks so far as he can every municipal improvement.
Then there is the political
kicker that says the government has gone to the bowwows,
and will lose all their votes in
the district because a representative didn't do us he wanted
thein to.
There is also the religious
kicker, who thiiiks.aU business
should be run on the Zion City
principle, give everything to
the churches and pay your own
expeiiJiJj.i.and govern the people by the rule laid down by the
i'hai'iuitie.
Then there is tho business
kicker, that thinks business
is overdone because some ono
goes into the same lino of business ho does and gets up-to-
date and advertises and secures
all the trade. , Of course he kicks
because ho doesn't think the
(own or people amount to a
darning needl'i.
Thou there is tho bum kicker,
that stands, or rather sits, on
the dry goods boxes, borrows a
chew of tobacco and a jack
knife, and whittles and kicks
because punlilers and toughs
have to obey tho law anil respect other pcwple besides themselves.
