All the departments of the great plant are kept
busy. Hardly a week passes but, what
new additions are added. It. was predicted hy the lute Charles 0. Parsons,
who was the Hrst to advocate Great
Falls us a suitable location for the
erection of a lui^e smelter, thnt some
day it would be possible to prod.ice re*
lined copper at a less figure than in any
city in the world, No doubt this mis
been realized. Since Supei inlendeiit
Klepetko has lieen installed many
new and valuable improvements have
l*en made and the cost of reducing
copper to a refined slide has reached a
point where it can lie but lilllc improved upun.
The. annual report of this company
will he oul next week, and it is learned
that tlle contents of the same will be
highly gratifying to the management
as well as to all concerned.
Oneof the features of Superintendent Klepetko's report last year was his
recommendation that the blast furnace
department be increased, und Hiatal-
raiigenieDt.be made to mamiraetui-e
its own supply of coke. These suggestions have been considered l.y the
managing directors, The capacity of
lhe furnaces has been increased fully
one-third. The plan of the company
has been very conservative, as well us
not to give out any Information concerning the company's future plans,
hut to a casual observer it is readily
seen that the Improvements now in
progress, when completed, will greatly
increase the capacity of tlie furnaces
as well as the refinery. Thus the output, of reflnen copper for 1806 will
greatly exceed that, of the pasl, year.
The Great Falls Tribune says that
although silver is low in pi-ice and
nearly all the thousands of picks and
shovels which were once in use in the
mining camps lie idle, the smelter of
the United .Smelling company affords
employment, tu quiten number..f men,
whose daily wages contribute to the
support of the business men of Great
Falls.
The scene in Ihe vicinity of Giant
spring is, however, a desolate one, in
con.paeison witli the activity there
when silver sold at $1 and above.
Then the smelter wus running al ils
full capacity, (lav and nighl, and men
were lo be seen -.bout every portion of
the building, but when silver dropped,
men were laid olf, one l.y oue, until,
last summer, lhe furnaces became cold
and all hands were idle.
But a few months ago lhe mines thnt.
had been shipping lo other smelters,
ou account of the Great Northern's
discrimination against Great Falls in
freight rates, resumed shipments In
Gi-eat Falls, and work was resumed al
the silver smelter.
Only one of the four furnaces at Ihe
smelterU now in operation, but between 125 and 160 men are employed
in handling Ihe ore and pulling il
through (he various processes lo which
it is subjected, Tlie pay roll is over
$10,000 per month, and under the
present management ihis money is
spent lu great Falls, wilh Great Falls
merchants, aud not, as heretofore, sent
to Helena.
Ahout 1,000 Ions of ore per day has
been llle average amount treated during the past month. The smeller is
now receiving all the ore from all Ihe
Neihart mines,, the ore from the prlu
cipal niines in the Trail Creek distiicl
in British Columbia, lead ore frum the
Poornian and other mines m the Cueue
d'Alcnes, and ore from lhe vicinity of
Castle and other points iu Molilalia.
The receipts from Ihe Trail Creek
district are gradually increasing iu
quantity. The output of lhe Neihii.t
mines lia.- slighlly decreased recently,
tlie Broadwater having reduced ils
force In order to prepare for renewing
work with au Increased for.-.*. Other
Neihart mines are also preparing lo
increase their output, and lhe receipts
nt. the smelter from that, camp will he
doubled within a few weeks.
The smeller officials believe Hint the
sliver unlike! hns a gradual, though
slow, upward tendency and, while Ibe
i ise, if any, will probably not be sufficient to cause any more mines to be
reopened, llle output of those mines
now in operation will probably l.e in.
creased. There is not lllicll ground for
hope lhat Ihe force at the United
smelter will soon lie matetlally increased, but it. is certain that, under
existing conditions, the smelter will
continue lo lie opeiaiti'das al present.—
Western Mining Wurld,
4.4
SEND TO WALES FOR THEIR COKE.
It has occalioi.cd some surprise that
that the Hull Mines company should j
send to Wales for lbe coke for use at
the smelter al Nelson. Inquiry has disclosed the fact lhat Welsh can be delivered at Vancouver and .hipped from I
there to Nelson at. a lower rate lhan!
can be obtained from Oonnellsvlllf lo I
Nelson. It has been demonstrated
that the coke made on the coast could
not be used advuntagemisly, owing
largely to an excess of ash, said to be
17 per cent. Another advantage of
the Welsh product was that it has;
only 5 per cent, ash and IU per cent. J
more call...... The Connellsvllle coke
has nlmiilR per cent, ash or 8 per cent,
less carbon Iluin Welsh coke. In fact
the coke from Wales is the purest and
best made in tlle world. The coal is
carefully prepared, being broken up
an.l washed and run over jigs to remove all of the Impurities possible before being pul in the ovens. This fact
is probably wbal has influenced the
owners of the smeller to order coke
from Wales—a probable lower rate of
freight and purer article.
The Diinsn.uii-s are building an extensive coking plant at or near their
mines. The same objection may be
raised to ihe producl as to tlle coke
produced in this stale, as from what
can be learned there is a great similarity in all the coals of the const.—
Spokesman-Review.
..-♦
KETTLE RIVER MINING DIVISION.
Record of Mineral Locations for the Week
Ending February 12.
8.
