"University of British Columbia"@en . "The conflict between the scholastic and experimental methods in the works of Feijoo is essentially the conflict between traditional and contemporary thought. In this study, therefore, both methods are interpreted in a very wide sense. The scholastic method represents the traditional studies of grammar, rhetoric and logic. The experimental method represents the empirical attitude and the innovations in mathematics that begin in western Europe during the seventeenth
century.
The first chapter of this study defines the conflict between tradition and innovation as it appears in Feijoo's first published work, Apologia del Scepticismo Medico. The second chapter examines the traditional aspects of Feijoo's thought as they manifest themselves in his use of scholastic logic. The third chapter considers Feijoo’s debt to the innovations of Descartes. The fourth chapter examines his approach to traditional physics, modern physics and the experimental method. The final chapter shows how Feijoo's attitude to ancient and modern thought appears in his aesthetic theories."@en . "https://circle.library.ubc.ca/rest/handle/2429/34235?expand=metadata"@en . The Benedictine reduces a l l t h i s to "ambiguedad de expression (Soph. 1)". He considers the syllogism, "Socrates i s d i f f e r e n t from Corisco, Corisco i s a man, therefore Socrates i s not a man" and concludes that the key to the d i f f i c u l t y l i e s i n the ambiguity of the word " d i f f e r e n t " . Feijoo discusses at some length the condition of the s c h o l a s t i c d i s p u t a t i o i n his time. He begins, "He oido, y l e i d o mil veces (mas quien no ha oido, y leido?) que e l f i n , s i no t o t a l , primario de las Disputas Escola-s t i c a s , es l a indagaci^n de l a verdad (Dis. 1 ) " . This end i s thwarted by " l a establecida p r e c i s i o n de conceder, o negar todas l as proposiciones de que consta e l argumento (Dis. 2 2 ) " . The form of the d i s p u t a t i o contained the assum-ption that every statement i s true or f a l s e so that every statement had to be affirmed or denied. Feijoo would change t h i s , "No d e c i r concedo n i niego sino dudo". I f one disagreed with the major proposition, "Lo mismo es d e c i r e l que defiende dubito de maiori, que dec i r neqo mairoem. S i sucediere, que e l arguyente pruebe l a verdad de su pro-posic i o n , podra entonces e l que defiende concederla s i n desayre suyo . . . . (Dis. 2 2 ) " . This device would serve to avoid a l l the time-consuming forms of admitto, permitto« omitto , transeat. Even i n theology these abuses occur. In t h i s d i s -c i p l i n e the dependence on the syllogism has grown too great (Aul. 3 ) . A r i s t o t l e , according to Fei j o o , never used s y l -logisms. Aquinas used them as sparingly as possible, "No se ve en ^1 r e p l i c a o contra r e p l i c a alguna, n i jama's a los agrumentos responde con l a formula de i r aplicando succes-sivamente a cada proposicion e l concedo, e l neqo o e l d i s -tinguo . . . (Aul. 1 2 ) " . In d i s c i p l i n e s other than theology the respect accorded to the syllogism i s also excessive. This respect was continued even a f t e r i t could c l e a r l y be seen that many syllogisms led to f a l l a c i e s , " l a f a l a c i a del sylogismo consiste, segun e l mismo A r i t o t e l e s , en la: apariencia que tiene de ser buena l a i l a c i o n , siendo mala en r e a l i d a d (Soph. 2 ) " . Since t h i s c r i t i c i s m has been adequately considered by 1 2 Delpy and by Staubach only the influence of Cartesian methods of inquiry on the Benedictine w i l l be examined here. Feijoo was not f a m i l i a r enough with the techniques of empirical inquiry to be able to r e j e c t completely the s c h o l a s t i c t r a d i t i o n which he admits i s inadequate. At times he i s able to solve problems by using empirical data, at times he uses t r a d i t i o n a l methods and at times he uses a l t e r n a t i v e methods. By s t r e s s i n g the importance of r i g o -rously examining a l l premises before accepting them and by basing his method of reasoning on mathematical models, Descartes provided an important a l t e r n a t i v e to the scho-l a s t i c method. I t has been shown how Feijoo would change the form of the d i s p u t a t i o by allowing the p a r t i c i p a n t s to doubt rather than a f f i r m or deny.
