Frauenliebe und Leben, op. 42 (A woman's love and life) Poetry by Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838) Composed in July 1840, the same year as Schumann's marriage to Clara Wieck, the poems must have seemed touchingly relevant to his own relationship with his bride. The poet, Chamisso, against the fashions of the time, gave the role of the narrator to the woman, and she speaks for herself, in her own voice, from the beginning. She has the right to describe her feelings and, as shy as she is, she tells us why in the second song she longs for this unattainable attractive man that she spoke of in the first song - his lips and eyes are as delectable as his gentle nature. In the second song, the heroine shows her selflessness by praising the Other Woman of the girl's imaginary scenario where her beloved will choose someone else. Her broken heart shifts suddenly to that of surprise when she discovers in the third song that it is she who is the chosen one. Du Ring an meinem Finger, is imbued with a new sense of maturity and responsibility as the bride-to-be is swept in the emotions associated with her engagement ring. The bustle of the wedding in the fifth song is heard as the woman bids farewell to her sisters and walks towards her new shared life. In the sixth song, she has already taken over the reins of household management and announces her pregnancy to the astounded husband who hears the news very much on her terms. In the next song, she pities men for not being able to know the joys of motherhood. By the time she reaches the final song in Schumann's cycle, she has developed into a formidable personality, capable of dealing with the bereavement over her late husband. Ironically, this story of \"A Woman's Love and Life\", with its wide range of emotions, are conveyed through the words and music by two men.
