(The first INVENTORY was published in 1974.) The information in these tables is derived from ROLLCALL UPDATE 94, a regular publication of the Health Human Resources Unit (HHRU), and the databases of the colleges and professional associations. The tables included in this report have been generated in response to a growing need for regional information in British Columbia. When there is no registration requirement. data is takenfrom membershipiiassociations, some of whichare thoughtto representa largeproportion of thoseworkingin the field. It is impossible to estimatehow manypeople this represents andwherethey live or work.Table2 also shows the varyingproportions of eachgroup thatare known to be workingin the field, comparedto those that are not, and thosefor whomwork status is unknown. The tables in the rest of thispublication use totalnumbersfor the group,as this represents the potential workforce in each region. Thedistinction betweenpotentialworkforce and employedworkforce is an importantone for health plannerstomake; the former represents healthhuman resourcesavailableto the region, while the latter is health humanresourcescurrentlyin use. Moreinformation about the employed workforceis availablein ROUCAlLUPDATE 94. The first table for each HealthRegion showsnumberandnumber per 10,000population in 1993and 1994as well as the averageannual rates of change in these numbersfor each health profession. The average annual rate of change in number is the growth in the numberof healthprofessionalsfor the year, while the averageannualrate of change in ratio shows the growthin the number ofhealth professionalsfnrelation to the growth in the population. For the latter statistic, a positivenumberindicates the health profession grew faster than the general population, and a negativenumber indicates thehealth professiongrew slower than the generalpopulation. This first table also includesnumbersof regionalhospitalbeds, communitypharmacies, and regionalpopulations. The second table for each HealthRegionshows age and sex distribution for each of the groupsfromROLLCAlL UPDATE 94. The final table producedfor each HealthRegion showsplace of graduationinformationfor thosegroups containedin the IllIRU biennial series PLACEOF GRADUATION. Physiotherapists are now regulatedunderthe HealthProfessions Act, have changedtheirname to PhysicalTherapists, and have establisheda CollegeofPhysicalTherapists of BritishColumbiaas the regulatory body. The new nameof "PhysicalTherapists" hasbeen adoptedhere, but the data presenteddepict the situation while thePhysiotherapists Act was still in effectInformation on physical therapists (PIs) was prepared from registration data maintainedby the APMPBCand includes PTs whoreporteda BritishColumbiaaddressat the date of record. PTs who also holdmembership in the British ColumbiaSocietyof Occupational Therapists(BCSOT) are included in both thephysical therapy and occupational therapy categories. The exactnumberof personnelwho are both registeredwith the APMPBC and membersof the BCSOTis not knowndue to the unavailability of those data from theAPMPBC, so the extentof double-counting of personnelin these two groupscan not be determined.23Adapted from Naticmal Occupational ClassifICation 1992. Majer Group 31, No. 3142, Ottawa: Employment and Immigration Canada. In the APMPBC, a PI' may be a Full Registrant - Part I (formerly a chartered member), a Full Registrant Part II (formerly a registered member), a Temporary Registrant. or an Inactive Registrant Full Registrants Part II differ from Full Registrants- Part I in that Part I Registrants may not practise except under thesupervision of a medical pmctitioner.24 A PI' may work under a temporary membership until his or herregistration can be completed. Remedial gymnasts may also register as members of the APMPBC, but are notincluded in the tables. PI's with inactive registration status are not included in these tables because they are notrequired to register with this status every year, so there is no accurate count of their numbers . The data in thetables are presented based on employment address when the membership status is "full" or "temporary", whenemployment in physical therapy is reported, and when employment address is available. In 1993 and 1994,employment address was available for 95% and 96% of full or temporary registrant PI's employed in physicaltherapy, respectively. Home address is used for the remainder, as well as for PI's with full or temporaryregistrant status who are not employed in physical therapy.24 Physiothecapists Act. 1979, RSBC 0Jap. 327, Part I, S.8.99100APPENDIXBMAP OF BRITISH COLUMBIABY HEALTH REGIONS101:102"17 British ColumbiaHealth Regions1 EastKootenay2 WestKootenay - Boundary4 North OkanaganS South Okanagan- SjrnjJJcameen6 Thompson Valley "7 UpperFraserValley9 South FraserValley10 SimonFraser11 Coast Garibaldi13 Central Vancouver Island14 North IsIandlMid CoastIS Cariboo16 North West17 PeaceRiver- Liard18 Northern Interior20 Vancouver30 Burnaby40 North ShoreSO Richmond60 Capital HealthTable 1Conversion Summary:Health Regions and Local Health Areas103Health Region Local Health Area(s)1 East Kootenay 1 Fernie 4 Wmclemx:R2 Cranbroolt 5 Qeston3 Kimberley 18 Golden2 West Kootenay - Boundary 6 KootenayLake 11 Trail7 Nelson 12 GrandForks9 Castlegar 13 KettleValley10 AIrowLakes4 North Okanagan 19 Reve1stoke 22 Vernon20 Salmon Arm 78 Enderby21 Armstrong-Spallumcbeen5 South Okanagan - Similkameen 14 Southern OItaDagan 17 Princeton15 Penticton 23 Central Okanagan16 Keremeos 77 Summerland6 Thompson VaDey 24 Kamloops 30 South Cariboo26 NlX'Ih Thompson 31 Me:ritt29 Lillooet7 Upper Fraser Valley 32 Hope 75 Mission33 "Report"@en .
