"UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS 1998 University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 1999 UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS UBCAuthors & Their Books Ninth Annual Authors' Reception t UBC we are fortunate to possess one of the finest libraries in North America. Over the years our library has acquired an enormous collection covering every conceivable field of human activity, preserved in materials as different as medieval manuscripts and CD-ROMs. Our library is a vast storehouse of knowledge and discovery, preserving our intellectual heritage for use by future generations. At the same time, it has a more active function as a research laboratory, providing scholars with both the raw materials and the facilities for their work. In many areas our holdings are unique, and draw researchers from all over the world. The library's function as both source and provider is what makes scholarship possible. The extraordinary productivity of UBC researchers over the past year is a reminder, if one were needed, of the strengths of our library's collections and the vital role they play in fostering much of the scholarly work that takes place on our campus. In congratulating our colleagues on their achievements, we should also acknowledge our library, not only for highlighting those achievements through an annual exhibition, but for helping make many of them possible. Martha C Piper President UBCAuthors 3 Their Books n behalf of the University Library, I am very pleased to join President Martha Piper in sponsoring the Ninth Annual Authors' Reception at which the University recognizes its authors and their books. With this event, we celebrate in particular the accomplishments of more than 120 authors, whose published works in 1998 cover some forty disciplines and include both print and electronic books, as well as other major creative works such as videos, compact discs, and music scores. These works are not only a testimony to the scholarship, research, and creative endeavors which take place at UBC, but also demonstrate how UBC scholars continue to make a significant contribution to the world's fund of knowledge and help make UBC one of the world's leading research universities. The Library's extensive print, electronic, and audio visual information resources, whether housed locally or accessed remotely, provided the foundation for the research of many of the authors who are being honored and made a significant contribution to the publication of their endeavors. Thus the Authors' Reception also provides an occasion to celebrate the role that the University Library plays in supporting learning, research, and scholarship. These works of UBCs authors enrich the quality and depth of the Library's collection, provide a basis for further study and research, and demonstrate that a first-class research library is truly the heart of the academic enterprise.
