"UBC AUTHORS a THEIR WORKS 2001 University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 2002 UBC The Library UBC AUTHORS a THEIR WORKS UBCAuthors & Their Works 12th Annual Authors' Reception t is always heartening to witness the annual display of published work by UBC's researchers, who stand at the forefront of so many fields, and whose contributions are making a huge impact across Canada and abroad. A glance at the list of this year's publications reminds us not only that UBC scholarship is strong in every imaginable academic discipline, but also that it crosses disciplines: that UBC is a leader in the development of multi-disciplinary learning and research, breaking down old barriers and inviting us to view the world in myriad new ways. On behalf of the UBC community, I extend my warmest congratulations to all the UBC authors and co-authors, editors, compilers, performers, and creators whose work makes up the exhibition that we celebrate at this annual Authors' Reception. I also want to thank the University Librarian and her colleagues for co-hosting this event. Much of the research represented here owes its origin and development to the resources provided by the UBC Library, and it is fitting that our Library and its staff be an integral part of this celebration. Martha C Piper President UBCAuthors & Their Works he creative results of scholarship take many forms, from books to films to CD-ROMs, and I am pleased to join President Martha Piper in congratulating the more than 150 authors who published their works, in a wide range of mediums, in 2001. Together they represent twelve languages, sixteen countries and nearly 50 departments; their ranks range from students to professors emeriti. The scope of these authors' interests is a testament to UBCs international reputation. The University attracts world-class faculty, students, staff and researchers from around the globe and the Library is committed to the development of their learning and research through the development of its collection, technology and services. The Library continues to expand its print, digital, online and audio-visual resources to support the University and the many successes of its scholars. In turn, UBC authors enrich not only our collection of materials, but contribute internationally to the collection and dissemination of knowledge. We are proud to play a role in this process by developing a first-class research library that will support and encourage scholarship and innovation.
