Clark, Morrison\nnnd Hay were appointed a committee to confer with the directors of\nthe Athletic association regarding\nthis matter.\nA meeting of the directors of the\nGrand Forks Agricultural association was held in the city hall on\nThursday evening.\nA. E. Craddock, secretary of the\nProvincial Fairs association, in a letter to the association, stated that a\ngrant of $851 had heen apportioned\nto the Grand Forks fail fair this\nyear, and that the department had\nappointed T. Edwards, of Victoria,\nas judge of the poultry exhibit, and\nM, S. Middleton, of Nelson, as judge\nof the fruit display. Mr. Craddock\noffered tbe association any assistance he could give which might\nhelp to make the first fair in this\ncity a success. The secretary was\ninstructed to acknowledge the receipt\nof the letter, with thanks, and to\nrequest tbat all blank, forms required\nto conduct tbe fair be forwarded to\n'he association here, and if the department did not have these, to wire\nthe secretary where they could be\nobtained.\nThe committee appointed to interview the ladies' societies of the\nPresbyterian und Holy Trinity\nchurches in regard to serving refreshments in the rinks, made their\nreport, which wns accepted. The\nladies of the English church would\nhave nothing to do with the matter,\nsince the ladies of Knox church\nhad advertised to hold their annual\ndinner during the fair. The present\nplans of the Ladies' Aid of the Presbyterian church would not interfere\nwith anyone who might desire to\nserve refreshments in the rinks.\nThe chairman of the grounds committee reported thut the race track\nis now in excellent condition.\nThe secretary was instructed to\nwrite to the department of agriculture antl request that an expert\napple packer be sent to this city to\ngive practical demonstrations during\nthe two days of the fair.\nThe secretary was voted a salary\nof 8100 till the business of the fair\nhaB been settled.\nThe secretary was instructed to\nrequest the manager of the 15. ('.\nTelephone coinpany to place a phone\nin tho skating rink for use during\nthe fair.\nF, Clark reported that satisfactory\narrangements had been made whereby J. 1). Honsberger would assist\nThomas Powers in collecting the\ndistrict exhibit for the Nelson fair.\nF. Clark reported that the directors of tbe Athletic association were\nabout ready to let a contract for additions to the skating rink. These\nincluded a Klxl7(i-foot lean-toon\nthe south side, which would contain\nseats for spectators at winter sports,\nand an addition at tho west side,\nKiix70 feet and two stories in\nheight. The partition in the waiting room in the east end of building\nwould also be removed, thus leaving\none large room. He thought with\nthese additions and alterations there\nwould be ample room to place all\nthe exhibits in one building. The\nlean-to is intended for the poultry\nexhibit, and he desired to know if\nthe directors wanted the iloor, which\nSPORTS AI LAKE\nAn Erroneous Report\nEditor Evening Sun.\nTokonto, Sept. 5.\u2014A few days\nago, while I was in Toronto, I was\ninvited by a friend to spend the\nafternoon on the bay in his gasoline\nlaunch, and did so, and when I returned to my boarding-house I was\ninformed that Grand Forks had been\ncompletely wiped out by forest fires.\nI said that such a thing was impossible, as there were no large forests\nin the immediate vicinity of Grand\nForks. I found, however, that all\nthe evening papers made the statement that Grand Forks had been\nentirely swept out of existence.\nI went down town to the offices of\nthe three morning papers\u2014the\nGlobe, Mail and Empire, and World\nto contradict the report. I went to\nthe Globe office first, and was shown\nthe dispatch. I knew at once from\nthe wording that Three ForkB was\nmeant, and told tbem so. They said\nthey, would put the matter right,\nand the dispatch was given correctly\nin all the morning papers. The editor of the Mail and Empire not only\ngave the correct dispatch, but appended a note stating that an erroneous report had been circulated\nin the evening papers, and that it\nwas impossible that any harm could\never come to Grand Forks from forest\nfires.\nThe evening papers, however,\nnever contradicted the report previously given out by them, and as\ntbey have a very large circulation\nthroughout Ontario, the belief of\nmany persons in different parts of\nthe province is that Grand Forks no\nlonger exists. I have been asketl\nrepeatedly if anything escaped the\nBarnes. The circulation of this report did harm to Grand Forks, as\nthen; are many persons wbo would\nbe afraid to go to live in a place sub\nject to danger from forest fires.\nJohn Simpson.\nLabor Day Celebrated by\nLarge Excursion Party\nFrom Oity\nTHE CITY COUNCIL\nNEWS OF THE CITY\nJohn Connors, a recent arrival in\nthe city from Keremeos, ransacked\nthe rooms at the Pacific hotel on\nWednesday and got away with a I EleCtAC Light Meters Being\nwatch, safety razor and a few other\nPERSONAL\nCity Solicitor Sutton lefl today for\nNelson, where he will present the\neity's case against the Kettle Valley\nRailway company hefore the railway\ncommissioners, who have tbeir opening sitting on Monday next.\nli. Opinion\non this subject is divergent, and the\ncouncil should therefore court the\nfullest expression of the wishes of\nthe ratepayers before final action is\ntaken. It is rightfully contended\nthat the fair is promoted for the benefit of the citizens, and if this contention is correct, there should be\nno serious objections to the yrant\nbeing made, provided the funds are\navailable, and it can be made legally\nand without curtailing needed civic\nimprovements. Hut if it is to be\nmade at the expense of tearing up\ntbe sidewalks in sections of the city\nnot represented in the council, or if\nthe grant means the stoppage of\npermanent public improvements,\nthen the people who pay the taxes\nhave a right to enter an objection.\nWe shall leave this matter to the\ndecision of the citizens.
