Aug. 19.\nWOMEN OF JAPAN\nChrysanthemum Girls are Asserting Themselves Today\nIt is rot generally known thai\nthe Japanese women were not\nalways subservient as they arc\ntoday. From the eighth to the\nsixteenth century the men and\nwomen were as clsoely associated\nas English people arc toda*,. They\nmet together, sang for each oilier,\nexcharged letters, wrote poetry\nad in general had good limes on\nequal footing.\nThe constant warfare of four\nhundred years gradually charged\nthese conditions. The influence\nard teaching of China brought\nabout thc idea in Japan that\nwomen should take a lower place\nin tin- sicca! scale than men, and\nthat il would be wise for them\nlo remain unnoticed as much as\npossible. They should be entirely\ndomestic and only unfaithful wives\nand iiiidutiful daughters should\ncare to be seen oul .if doors. These\nideas too kgratlual root and finally\ngave the Japanese woman the\nposition which she practically holds\ntoday. Men and women have\nlived really separate lives except\nin the married life of the home.\nTwentieth century ideas and\nintercourse with Western countries\nhave brought about influences\nwhich will undoubtedly restore\nto the Japanese women their old\ntime equality.
