The
counsel for the defence depended entirely upon the address to the jury, in
which Scotland Yard and its methods
were severely criticized and sometimes
ridiculed: and the strong point made
that the remains at the Crippen house
at Hilldrop had never been identified.
This matter of the lack of identification was made one of the strongest
points.
The judge summed up coldly and
deliberately, but not to any unwonted
length although he did draw attention
to the importance of the case and the
necessity of the jury keeping to the
evidence and not being swayed by the
excitement so long continued in the
minds of the general public.
The jury then retired, and a high
state of tension was manifest until
they returned to the court room. The
verdict was handed to the judge in a
sealed envelope, and before it was an
nounced the recorder of the court
placed a small patch of black on the
wig of the judge. The latter then
announced the verdict, and solemnly
uttered the sentence of death.
IRUSH HEATING
OF NEW SCHOOL
| IS ORDER TO FIRM WHO HAVE
CONTRACT IN HAND
| New School Will be Occupied after
Christmas Holidaya and There Will
be Another Teacher Needed. It was the greatest flood of the
lower Skeena since white men have
lived here, and those who experienced
its terrors want no more. Port Essington, the late metropolis, was almost
inundated. Families were driven from
their homes and the streets are today
hopelessly litteed with wreckage and
driftwood.
The big wind of Wednesday was from
the west, which is quite an irregular
place for the big winds to hail from
and the high tide coming at the same
time filled' the lower Skeena with more
salt chuck than has been between its
cliffs for many a day.
At Port Essington houses were carried
tway, boat houses disappeared, boats
floated up on the streets, wharves were
damaged, sidewalks were ripped up
and tree trunks four feet through were
piled up on the streets. Part of Mr.
Fred Rudge's dwelling was carried
away while he was in the house; Peter
Pollard had to move out in order to
save his life. His home is no more; two
others are gone; 150 feet of s'dewalk
at the B. The- complaint comes
from a two-man shop. Just to
impress the point we repeat that
the Optimist has more plant,
stock and material than any other
shop in the north. It has the
largeit staff, the highest paid
printers, a pay roll that is half
as large again as the total wage
list of all other printing shops in
the city; it produces more work
than all other printing plants in
the city combined. The quality
of its product is unsurpassed by
any shop on the coast, and the
Optimist newspaper is admitted
to be typographically the the best
printed paper in the province.
Optimist products have the imprint of a community of brains.
Its superiority leaves it without
a rival locally.
t—
At a recent meeting of the School
Board of Prince Rupert, D. G. Stewart
drew attention to the fact that the
Commission on Technical Education
appointed by the Dominion Government would be visiting several points
in British Columbia during the months
of November and December. He suggested that the Board should send an
invitation to the commissioners to hold
at least one sitting at Prince Rupert.
This suggestion met with a favorable
reception by the Board, and the secretary was instructed to write to the
Hon. Wm. Templeman and ask him
to extend on behalf of the Board their
invitation to the commissioners to come
to Prince Rupert.
This subject of technical education
is a live one, and is receiving growing
attention now in many parts of the
Dominion. The Dominion Government
have taken the matter up under theit
Trade and Commerce department, and
have secured the co-operation of the
Provincial Governemnt.
The importance to the boys and
growing lads of the rising cities of
Canada, of having the opportuntiy
given them of perfecting their knowledge
of technical matters, and gaining a
practical insight into the details and
principles of their calling as early as
possible, cannot be over emphasized.
Upon the basis of early technical training
of their boys is being built up the commercial and industrial prosperity of
the go-ahead nations of the world today,
and Canada will not be a lag-last in this
department of national progress.
Certainly Prince Rupert, with that
splendid industrial and commercial future in front of her which is brought
nearer by every rail laid hour by hour
on the transcontinental railway, will
not let slip any opportunity of keeping
right in line with the march of progress,
and just a little bit ahead.
The step taken by the Prince Rupert
School Board is a live one and^ar-seeing.
The boys for whose benefit it is taken
today will be the men of the Prince
Rupert of tomorrow—that city of ringing
railway yards, and clanging engine
shops, of busy wharves with thronging
workmen and clattering derricks, hurrying day and night to cope with the
ever increasing commerce of the seas—
the city of our devise, our aim, our
certainty.'
Kaien Ialand Dance
The first of a series of club dances
was held in the gymnasium of the Kaien
Island club last evening and proved a
delightful affair. It was a figgt—a
battle of wills, and he boys enjoyed
it as well as if it had been a boxing
match.
It happened suddenly and as a sur-
p ice. The professor had been going
through some hypnotic expe iments
with "subjects" vounteered by the
audience. The inevitable funny man
had g t on the stage and refusing to
submit o the hypnotic influence fai ly,
had put in som- comical stunts of his
own so effectively that he was gently
requested to retire as giggles disturb
hypnotic experiments in tha early stages.
There had been an interval pleasingly
filled by the moving picture show.
Then, lest there might be any feeling
of scepticism in the audience, Professor
Hoyle announced his readiness to meet
any one willing to investigate the
subject scientifically right there before
the whole audience.
There was a momentary pause, Then
the deep voice of a gentleman well-
known in Prince Rupert spoke from the
rear of the theatre.
"On purely scientific grounds?" he
asked. (
The Professor assented, and the
gentleman strode forward down the
aisle.
A whisper ran round the audience,
"Gee!" said someone, "It's Archer.
He's keen on hypnotism. Now, we're
going to see something!"
A moment more and the men were
facing each other on the stage. They
looked each other between the eyes
like duellists, sizing each other up.
They agreed to fight fair each with the
weapon of his will power, clasped hands
for a second to seal the bargain, and
met in determined conflict.
First it seemed as if the Professor
were gaining the upper hand. Then
again the local man seemed to have it.
The contestants gripped hands, and
broke apart again. The Professor
fanned his brow with his handkerchief.
The local man seemed undisturbed.
Again they returned to the conflict.
Archer's eyes gleamed.
The Professor staggered back.
"Do you admit that mine is the strong-
e will?" demanded his opponent.
"Not yet!" was the reply, and once
more they met eye to eye.
Then at last the Professor wavered.
"Enough!" he said and agreed to submit
to h's opponent's will, and to give him
all the assistance in -his power.
$*ith a few rapid passes Archer put
the Professor under the hypnotic influence, and he became rigid as a bar
of steel. With the help of two men he
was placed across the backs of two
chairs. A rug was flung across his
middle, and a-huge slab of rock torn
by the force of dynamite out of the ribs
of Prince Rupert was placed upon his
body.
Then Archer produced a sledge hammer.
CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
THE PRINCE RUPERT OPTIMIST
THE IROQUOIS
POOL
English and American Billiards
Eight Tables Centre Street
We have Beveral well located
four room cottages, some with
bath, for rent at a reasonable
figure. GUSTAVE BERGER
Pub. Sept. 7. John Dybhavn, Agent
SCOTSMAN WHO WOULD BE
KING OF C0C0S ISLANDS
John Sidney Clunies-Ross, is a figure
as strangely romantic as was ever
pictured i y writers of the most lurid
fiction. He is a well educated and
wealthy gentleman, descended on one
side from an aristrocratic Scotch family
and on ^he other from Royal Maylay
blood; but at home, in the Cocos
Islands, he is monarch of all he surveys
and he surveys a good deal.
Mr. Clunies-Ross, whose father died
a month or two ago, is the fourth of
his name to rule over the little group
of coral islands in the Indian Ocean.
The story of his family is that of a man
who would be King who lived nearly
one hundred years ago.
The original Clunies-Ross bore the
same name as his great-grandson. He
was born in the Shetland islands whither
his family had fled, proscribed, after
the failure of the Jacobite risingup in
the early eighteenth century. It was
adventurous fighting blood that warmed
young John's veins and the Shetland
islands were a narrow home for him
so he obeyed the call of the sea and
fared forth to make for fortune, which
he did in an extraordianry manner.
In the course of his roving he fell
in with one Alexander Hare, a dissolute, imaginative, not over honest
man, who had come under the spell
of the East to the extent of adopting most of its vices. He was in disgrace with his emp overs and found
a change of residence imperative. In
Clunies-Ross he met a man as daring as himself, though honorable and
straight-living. He proposed that the
pair of them should seek out an uninhabited group of islands and live
thereon like Oriental potentates.
The young Scotchman liked the
idea, and the two proceeded to the
Cocos islands, 500 miles from other
land, and established themselves, together with about 100 others. Hare
took a harem along with him and prepared to spend his days in riotous
living; Clunies-Ross took his lawful
family, was satisfied with the primitive
life, and looked about for a chance to
trade.
He tried spices and coffee and failed.
Then he pitched on cocoanuts as his
best investment, and planted great
groves of the trees. While thLy were
growing he traded as best he could, and
a good many Malays, with a few whites,
were attracted to the islands. Hare tried
to enslave the darker portion of the
population with such ill-success that he
was forced to leave the island. He went
to Singapore where he died not long
afterwards, deserted by his harem and
"courtiers."
The cocoanuts grew and Clunies-
Ross began to make money out of
the oil and various other products
of Ross was recognized and welcomed
the trees. Trade prospered in other
directions also, and the island attracted
more inhabitants. The rule of Ross
was recognized and welcomed. He was
just and kind and withal canny in matters
of trading.
Then John having ruled twenty-
seven years, died in 1584. He was
succeeded by John George, his son.
In his time the territory was claimed
under British protection, but the change
was merely nominal. Nobody inter-
ferred with the absolute rule of John
George. He further strengthened his
position by marrying a Malay woman of
royal blood and fine character. Together
they developed the island and saw
justice done.
The chief's six sons were all educated in Scotland for the cocoanuts
were bringing in a tidy sum. George
was the eldest son, and he studied
engineering that his islands might have
the benefit of his skill. When he succeeded his father he devoted himself
not only to carrying on trade but in
perfecting the native arts. He in turn
married a native woman, who proved
as worthy a helpmate as the wife og
John George.
The islands suffered from cyclones
but the skill of the chief repaired all
damages, and soon the place was as
propserous as ever. The inhabitants
even attempted, but unsuccessfully, to
colonize another island, 500 miles away.
The island was unfortunately rich,
and so many white men were attracted
to the place that the colonists gave up
in disgust and returned to their peaceful
home.
Like his forebears George Culnies-
Ross had many sons, all educated in
England. He was in England with
them when he died, in June of this
year. His son, John Sidney succeeded
to the kingship or whatever it may
be called, and the property. There
has been trouble in England over probating the will because there is no
legal machinery for doing such things
in the Cocos islands, but this little
difficulty does not affect the status
of John Sidney. The islanders, who
number about 700, are satisfied with
the justice of the Clunies-Ross dynasty, and have no desire to invite a
change of government.
There are neither soldiers nor police on the Cocos islands. The natives
live at peace with one another, and
with the great spirit they believe in.
They have plenty of this world's goods—
plenty, that is, for simple healthy
wants. All things considered there are
much worse places to live in than this
little group with its romantic history,
and the king says he will be glad to be
home again.
Try the Sunday dinner at the Savoy.
LAND PURCHASE NOTICE
Queen Charlotte Ialands Land Distr ct—District
of Skeena
Take notice that John W. Agent
STANLEY KETCHELL'S DEATH
MAKES PAPKE CHAMPION
The death of Stanley Ketchell and
the passing away of this famous exponent
of the fistic art, now gives Billy Papke,
the Illinois Thunderbolt, the undisputed
right to the misddleweight championhip.
The passing of the "Bengal" will also
seriously affect the plans of Hugh McIntosh, who had matched the deceased
against Tom Thomas, and a number of
the pick of England's fighters.
Of all American fighters who stepped
through the ropes and performed in the
squared circle, Ketchell, through his
gameness, ability and clever work won
the hearts of the fight fans of the entire western hemisphere. A fighter by
nature, a cool-headed, daring two-handed mixer, Ketchell took a chance that
few men of his size cared to take, when
one year ago today he met the terrible
Jack Johnson and was defeated by the
Galveston black in twelve rounds at
the Colma arena, San Francisco. Ketchell did something that few other fighters did with the black man, he put the
big ebony champion on the floor in the
twelfth round of this affair. But Ketchell was too small to go long with the
big fellow, and Johnson ended Ketchell's
championship aspiration by putting him
to sleep. Ever since that battle Ketchell
has been deteriorating, and though he
failed to gain the heavyweight title and
wrest the championship from the son of
Ham, he was able to retain the middleweight belt.
Ketchell was still a young man, and
at the time of his death was but twenty-
three years and two months of age. He
was born September 14, 1887, at Grand
Rapids, Michigan. His right name
was Stanislaus Kiechal, and his nationality a Polish-American, his father
being a Pole by birth. Ketchell began
fighting when but sixteen years of age,
and the first affair in which he figured,
of which any known record is maintained, was at Butte, Mont., where he
knocked out Kid Tracy in one round
For several years the future champion
fought around Butte, Helena, Miles City
and various Montana towns. His first
fight in California occurred March 23,
1906, when he fought Mike McClure at
Redding.
Ketchell's first fight of any prominence occurred in Marysville, California,
July 4, 1907, when he went twenty
rounds to a draw with Joe Thomas,
the welter weight champion of that time.
Ketchell met Thomas, Sept. 2, of,the
same year in San Francisco, and gained
the championship by putting Thomas
out in twenty rounds. He met Thomas
once more in the Golden Gate city and
won on a decision in twenty rounds.
Taking on weight Ketchell began
meeting such men as the Twins Sullivan, Billy Papke and Hugo Kelly. He
made a fool of Mike Twin by hanging
a stiff one on the baldheaded fighter
in one round at Colma, Feb. 22. 1908,
and disposed of the other twin, Jack, in
the same fashion, in twenty rounds at
the Colma arena, May 9, of the same
year. On June 4, of the same year,
Ketchell won on a decision from the
Illinois Thunderbolt, ■ Papke, in ten
rounds at Milwaukee, and knocked out
Hugo Kelly, July 31, at the Mission
street arena, San Francisco, after a
short battle of three rounds.
Ketchell met his first defeat on Labor
Day of the same year, at Los Angeles,
when Billy Papke put a sleep-producing
one over on the Michigander's jaw in
twelve rounds. A few months after this
affair Ketchell retaliated, when , on Nov.
26 of the same year, he put the Illinois
Thunderbolt out on the canvas in eleven
rounds. In the following year, Ketchell
won fame and distinction by nearly
murdering "Jack the Confessor" O'Brien, when he met the self-proclaimed
heavyweight champion of the world
in a limited affair in New York City.
Only the bell in the tenth round saved
O'Brien from the count, as the "con-'
feasor" was down on his hands and knees
when the affair stopped. Only July 5,
of last year, Ketchell established his
right to the middleweight title by defeating Billy Papke in a tw • nty-round
affair at Colma.
Confident, because of his long string
of victories, that he could do away with
the Galveston black, Johnson, Ketchell
met the present heavyweight at Colma,
one year ago today. The result is
known to all. Ketchell, catching the big
fellow off his guard, put one over that
made the black go to the canvas, but
Johnson, rising up, finished Ketchell.
Since that time Ketchell has been going down the toboggan at a rapid pace
according to current rumors, and it is
understood that he intended retiring
from the ring and entering the vaudeville stage as a means of making a
livelihood. It is known that he was
recently fo ced to go back to his home
to recuperate because of a physical
breakdowTi he suffered in New York,
and it is thought that the terrible beating administered him by Johnson, combined with the fast life he has been
reputed to have been living, has caused
this breakdown.
But the fact remains that Ketchell
was a fighter in every sense of the
word, a ripping, slashing two-handed
pugilist who feared nothing, and who
went into every fight with the intention
of winning. There was nothing crooked
about the man and though he made the
fatal mistake of tackling the giant
black, it must be said that he had no
yellow streak such as other fighters of
the present day and every fight won
by Stanley Ketchell was won simply
through great fighting ability.
Leonard & Reid
Real Estate Brokers
P.O. We take it as a certain
compliment that our contempora y deems us so interesti g a matter ier discussion,
but we wish to frankly ask the editor of the Empire to refrain from stating or
insinuating as truth that which is not fact. We are quite prepared to be charitable
and to credit the Empire with no malevolence, but at the same time the fact remains
that the articles of the 19th and 21st were almost devoid of accuracy in so far as
they related to this paper.
We repeat, we desire to be charitable; nay, more, we go further and we would
say that we believe there is room for all the newspapers in this city, and we have
a disposition to quarrel with none of them. With the venom that may have been
passed between the two journals in the past we have nothing to do. A part of it
may have been personal but whatever it was it is past and we shall not willingly
continue it. It is our desire to be good natured; to be a prophet of good in this
city and in the land; to stand or everything that may go to make the West wholesome, happy and prosperous.
As far as relates to city affairs we shal do our utmost to back every enterprise,
and every undertaking, and every policy that seems to us advantageous to the
community, and we hold ourselves in readiness to stand by every individual no
matter who, who seems to us to be fighting for a sane and honest principle. With
the present city council we have emphatically no alliance. Neither Mayor Stork,
nor Alderman Pattullo, nor Alderman Hilditch, nor Alderman Mclntyre, nor
Alderman Naden, nor Alderman Mobley, nor Alderman Lynch, nor Alderman
Smith, nor Alderman Barrow need count upon the unwavering support of these
columns. Perhaps they do not want it. Be that as it may, we shall not ask them
but from day to day we shall criticise or approve according to the light that is
ours.
We believe firmly that it is a curse to have politics in civic matters. If the
present municipal council have introduced party politics, they have betrayed their
trust and subverted the right principles of municipal government. We do not
agree that M. M. Stephens and H. H. Clarke were knifed by Liberals. Our recollection is that.except the top two and the bottom two, the aldermen ran failry
well in a bunch. Someone had to be beaten. Naden and Stephens had a neck
and neck race of it; Clarke was away and took very little part of a campaign where
the electorate was entirely new. We see no political significance in their defeat
whatever. But that, too, is past, and we would simply say now that we believe
firmly in forgetting party politics in municipal affairs. The responsibility for
forgetting is upon the outstanding men on both sides; on both sides and not on
one side for if one side will not forget the other side must remember.
With regard to the politics of this paper, perhaps the majority of the shareholders may decide to employ an editor of Conservative leanings; perhaps the
opposite; or perhaps the editor may be one of the increasing number of those
modern individuals who believe that inalienable adherence to party is a mistake
and pernicious. Time will show our views, and as issues from time to time arise
we trust our editorial brains will find for us a clear, broad, progressive view for
which to stand. The brains may change; they may err; but .we trust our errors
may be forgiven. We shall try to keep our temper sweet, our purpose honest and
our vision clear.
Finally, we do not think that anything is gained by vindictive-editors tossing
splenetic ink at each other. We do not think the public find it interesting, and we
think our columns can be filled to better advantage. We wish our brothers in the
fraternity very well.
AMENDMENTS TO MINING ACT
It will be noticed that our member of parliament, Minister Templeman, is
announced to introduce a bill in the coming session of parlaiment for the better
protection of mine workers. The scope of the bill is believed to be practically
confined to safeguards in the handling of explosives, but it undoubtedly will or
should embrace all possible-safeguards to human life as well. A correspondent
points out that our member has possibly in view the great mines of the south of
the province, yet that it will not be very long before the largest producing mines
will be in the north and that they also should be taken into consideration. In this
connection he draws attention to the superiority of telephones in deep workings
as a means of giving warnings on emergency and thus acting as a valuable life
saver.
Telephone men say that within the next ten years every mine of importance
will be equipped with intercommunicating systems. Following the disaster at
Cherry, the Illinois legislature passed a law requiring the installation of telephone
systems in mines as a life-saving, precautionary measure, and the value of the law
has been such that other states and mine owners are likely to fall in line.
Ten years ago some mine owners did put in telephone systems, but they speedily
were proved useless on account of the atmospheric conditions, the dampness, the
gases and the corrosive acids let loose by blasting and digging. These bit into
the wires and the phones and put the lines out of commission in a comparatively
short time. After that little effort was made for several years to rig up any communicating system other than speaking tubes.
The apparatus manufacturers were too busy meeting the demands of the above
ground fields to study the need of mines, and not until within the last year has there
been any special effort to contrive apparatus that would overcome the difficulties.
It is now believed that the former defects of a telephone system for mines has been
remedied.
Read The Optimist
ARE YOU IN NEED OF HELP ? Orders for good positions are pouring in,
and some seats have already been sold
for $50 apiece. Office rents along the
route have jumped amazingly, and several new buildings are being rushed to
completion.
Needless to say, it is not the Britisher upon whom these enterprising
agents depend for emormous prices,
and many homeward bound Amerivans
arranged for seats before sailing. Orders are coming from every branch
of the Empire, New Zealand, Australia,
India, and South Africa being represented among the orders received by
one agent.
A big feature of .the coronation will
be the monster exhibition showing the
growth of England and her colonies
during King Edward's reign. Her peoples and their handiwork will be shown
and the exhibition is planned to demonstrate the power and infinite resources
of the British Empire.
"THE CANADIAN SEA"'
Name of Hudson Bay to Be; Changed
for Better Title
Ottawa, Oct. 16.—There is a prospeft
that the name of Hudson Bay will be
changed for something more appropriate. Obviously the present name
is not appropriate for it is not a bay
at all, but a sea, and the third largest
sea at that. A few of the Western
papers have united in calling it the
"Canadian Mediterranean." Others regard this as cumbersome and lacking
in initiative and suggest that the title
given it some years ago by Mr. W. F.
McLean, M. P., "The Canadian Sea,"
is much more suitable, more dignified,
and more distinctive.
Now that all danger of its passing
from the exclusive control of Candaa
has been removed by the recent decision at The Hague, and an era of
prosperity seems to be dawning for
these northern waters, the time may
be opportune to dignify it by the name
"The Canadian Sea."
See the flickerless motion ' pictures—
the silent drama—aAhe Phenix theatre.
*1« Albion
N Bottling
Co.
Manufacturers of
Sodawater, Syiups, Mineral Water, etc.'
Wholesale Dealers in
Sweet Wines, Beer, Cider & Cigars
T. D. Mann and associates take it over,
is to invade the Arctic ocean. A whaling
station similar to that at Kyuquot is
to be built at the mouth of the Mackenzie
river, says the Colonist, and two of the
five new whaling steamers being built
at Christiana, Norway, are to steam to
the Arctic to make their base at the
new Mackenzie river station. The
three others will be added to the fleet
of five already engaged from the British Columbia whaling stations, to which
another will be added. This will be
located in the vicinity of Prince Rupert.
The whaling in the Arctic has heretofore been carried on by San Francisco whalers, outfitted for cruises lasting several years, and the sending of
the two steam whalers to work from
a shore station will make a new departure in the Arctic ocean whaling
industry.
The five steam whalers being constructed by the Norwegian builders will
not be sent out in sections as was the
steamer William Grant, the last vessel
brought from Norway. The fleet will
be completed in Norway and will steam
around South America by way of the
Strait of Magellan to Victoria. Three
will start first in a small fleet, coming
out together, and the two others, built
for the work in the Arctic, will come
out at a later date.
When the new stations near Prince
Rupert and at the mouth of the Mackenzie river have been established, the
company will have five whaling stations, from each one of which two
steam whalers will, be operated. On
the west coast of Vancouver Island are
two stations at Sechart and Kyuquot,
and a third station is on Kunghit Is.
land, southernmost of the Queen Charlotte group. The Prince Rupert and
Mackenzie river stations are to be located in the spring and it is expected
the work in the Arctic will commence
next summer.
The Saving Habit
is the foundation of Independence. This will be four weeks of work
before Christmas holidays, or sufficient
time to clear off preliminary business,
organize committees and get everything
in complete running order.
The estimates are at present in
course of preparation in all departments and it is anticipated that Hon.
W. S. Fielding will be able to lay the
main estimates and public accounts on
the table shortly after parliament
opens. This will give the house something to do from the start.
So far as one can judge at the present
time, the legislative program is not
likely to be as heavy as it was last session when the naval, insurance and anti-
gambling bills in themselves constituted
a heavy sessional program which compelled the house to leave over a number
of bills until this session, including a bill
to revise the banking act. This legislation which provides for a regular decennial revision of the banking laws,
was not actually introduced so that the
intention of the government was not
revealed. It is probable that when it
is introduced this session it will be
found to provide for some measure of
government inspection of banking institutions.
Hon. Mr. Templeman will have for
consideration of the house a bill to provide safeguards in connection with the
manufacture of explosives. This matter has become important, owing to
the large nujmber of serious calamities
which have occurred as' a result of explosions in factories where powder,
and other high explosives are manufactured. But in this
generation the passion has developed
into a craze to get away from the beaten
paths of Continental Europe and to be
able to boast of having traversed the
remotest corners of the earth and its
trackless wilds,
This modest brochure shows them a
country so absolutely new they may be
the first to brush the dew of the dawn of
Creation from it. The prate has been
of visiting countries interesting for
their ruined records of a bygone civilization; this shows them a section of a
populous continent where they can look
upon the earth as it lay at the sources
of Time, with a history antedating the
most primeval records of civilization
written on its massive rocks.
There" is little doubt this will serve
to startle tourist travel in this new direction. Furthermore it is one of many
such attractive publications the Grand
Trunk Pacific has in view for the effecting of the same purpose. The Optimist
published at the time the starting out
of the Charlton exploration party last
July, for a trip from Edmonton to
Prince Rupert, the party consisting of
talented writers, artists and photographers. Mr. Charlton, general advertising agent of the company, turned
back at Tete Jaune Cache, and this
pamphlet has been produced since.
Mr. Lett, colonization agent, Home
Russell, the artist, Fred Talbot the
English magazine writer and others
completed the trip to this city as has
been told in these columns.
So this little book is the first of a series
bound to turn the tourist travel in this
direction and incidentally assist in the
building up • of Prince Rupert. Tete
Jaune Cache, the locality of which this
treats, is on this side of the Rockies,
and it is officially stated in the book that
it is expected steel will reach Yellowstone
Pass near the close of this year, so that
while the railway will not be completed
next summer it is reasonable to presume
conveniences will be provided for these
wealthy tourists to reach the end of
steel being laid out of Prince Rupert
and continue their tour from this por'
of growing fame.
SAMUEL HARRISON
V.F.G. Another view is called "The Valley of a
Thousand Falls," and in describing
this the Rev. C. B. R. Here and there on sheltered
ledges patches of spruce relieve, with
their dark greens, the greys of the
rocks; while everywhere the numerous
streams from the great glaciers all
around plunge over the high precipices
in countless falls of spray. A mighty
tongue of ice lolls over a cliff at the head
of the valley and curves so low as to
reach the valley floor; while here and
there in the bottom of the valley are
huge spring? from which flow full-
fledged streams. A high up glacier on
the west has such a large field of snow
at its source and flows down so steep
an in line, that huge chunks of ice are
constantly breaking off its precipitous
front and crashing into the valley below.
The most fearful avalanche I ever saw
came form this glacier and took ten
minutes by my watch for the foremost
chunks of ice to reach the valley below.
"At the -head of the valley and to
the north rises Mount Turner, a splendid
peak of some twelve thousand feet
altitude, while to the right, at an altitude
of between two and three thousand
feet above the valley the Grand Forks,
swift flowing from Berg Lake, leaps
from the cliff and forms a superb falls
as high as a Niaraga, then plunges
in a number of beautiful cataracts
down a narrow gorge till it sweeps
across the floor of the valley. And
from the Goat trail, which winds in and
out among the overhanging cliffs, truly
the "Valley of a Thousand Falls" is a
marvel of Alpine scenery."
In the second part of the booklet
devoted to "Canada's New National
Playground," the Jasper Park Reserve
of five thousand square miles there
is a double page illustration of the
Fish Lake and the Fiddle Back ange.
All the photographs have been toned
and stippled and shaded and retouched
to the finest degree of real art, but in
this one particularly is shown the contrast of effect, the contrast of what is
powerful and menacing with what
is safe and peaceful. And of this never
failing source of our pleasures and
emotions the description goes on:
"Away beyond the magnificent jasper
portals of the charming Athabaska Pass,
through which the Grand Trunk Pacific
railway traverses the Rovky Mountains,
lies a .vast, wild, unsubdued Alpine
wonderland, rich in peerless scenic
grandeur, and w.'ld regions hallowed by
history, by Indian legend and by the
romance of the picturesque voyageurs,
tbe coureurs du bois and the pathfinders
of the fur trade, who builded the foundations of an empire under the setting
sun. This is a glorious heritage of the
Canadian people which the Grand Trunk
Pacific is developing, and which is a
precious, if not as plentiful in corn and
milk, as the rich plains which stretch
away for a thousand miles eastward
from those rugged, mighty bulwarks
of the western hemisphere. It is a
heritage which has not and never can
be alienated, as it has been vested for
ever in the name of the nation as the
Jasper National Park—an illimitable
sanctuary for the work-a-day world, far
from the strife and bustle of the market
place, and in contact with nature, peaceful, pure and undefiled."
With such glowing words does the
writer embellish and assist the work of
the artist in showing that in this national reserve there is every diversity of
natural features to delight and gratify
the mountaineer or the explorer, or
interest and vivify the tourist. And
of the lakes and tarns "reposing in
their mountain privacy like mirrors
set in emerald," the impressive solitudes,
the turbulent torrents brawling down
from the frozen torpitude of their glacial
sources, the sublime vistas and so on
are so vividly described that the mere
first reading of the booklet cannot fail
to bring on severe attacks of wanderlust
and startle people hearing "The Call of
the Wild" in the silent watches of the
night.
But when this series of booklets
reaches the Skeena river, then we of
Prince Rupert shall be more keenly
interested. Wondrous in its descriptive
art as this is,-that devoted to our own
noble river we must expect to surpass
it in every respect. For the' whole
party engaged in this work, artists,
writers, explorers one and all, vowed and
declared, while here but a few weeks
back, that for glorious scenery the
Skeena leads the world.
And as this whole section can now be
reached both by rail and stearmer, one
may reasonably hope that the early
exploitation by the company of its
scenic beauties, will prove Prince Ru:
pert's hotel accommodations totally
inadequate to meet the requirements
of next summer's tourists.
Try the Sunday dinner at the Savoy.
LAND PURCHASE NOTICE
Skeana Land Diatrict—District ot Caaaiar
Take notiee that William Currie of Seattle,
Waah., U.
