Trade was called on Saturday\nalternoon to meet tlie Hon Richard\nMcBride and to lay before him several\nol the most important questions that\nare ol vital moment to the city.\nEvery member ol tlie board was present, and C. F. Lindmark taking the\nchair said that he was very pleased to\nwelcome Mr. McBride to Revelstoke,\nand wiib glad that the city bad now\ngot an opportunity ol laying their\nrequests belore the premier in person.\nHe stated briefly the nature ot the\ncity's demands, the first being the\nprotection of the river bank.\nThe premier said that it was the\nduty ol the federal authorities to\nundertake river work but that they\nhad not assumed the responsibility,\nalthough tlie province too, should conserve the bankB and adjacent properties. But tlie situation was too serious\nto allow the matter to be dropped\nwhile both governments haggled over\nit with ill feeling, nnd that it was his\nIntention to send a reliable man to report to Iiim personally on the bank\nand to olilniu a special grant Irom the\nprovincial treasury to protect the bank\nand to perfect the work at the most\nseasonable time. He recognised that\nwe were asking for what wus our right\nand the government would always do\ntheir iiest to help Revelstoke out.\nllegar.li.ig the I rathe bridge over\nthe Columbia, he suid that the government had always shown a friendly\nspirit mid disposition to do this work\nand l.e promised that he would take\nup tl.e matter with the C. P. R. and\nthat l.e was already in communication\nwiti. them. He recognized that the\nbridge would ho a very important\nfeature lor the city and also lor tlie\nprovince, and he promised that the\ngovernment will do ite best to bring\nbout the request.\nH. A. Brown atked it the government had made provision lor a new\nprovincial goal, as the old one was an\neye sore. The premier replied lhat\nthe question was au old one and that\nit hud been frequently brought home\nto him. He h-id made investigation\nand found that there was no immediate need of a new goal and as a matter\nol fact lie had closed down many goals\nin the province for economy's sake,\nand that our population hardly warranted yet a new building. But he\nsaid that ns this was a growing town\nand a very important centre lie might\narrange estimates this coming year Ior\na new goal. He saw the need of larger\ngovernment offices and it was up to\nthe government to erect larger buildings. He knew that Kevelstoke was\nasking for a right and he would\nthat the government would try and\nco-operate with the civic authorities\nand have a new goal erected.\nF. Lewis requetted that a road\nconstructed to the lands where settling\nand building is proceeding at the south\neast end of the city, the old road\nhaving been washed away by tlie river.\nHe suggested that Connaught Ave. be\nopened up outside tbe city limits.\nTlie premier said that the public works\nhad many more calls ol far greater\nimportance than that and tbat their\nmoney was nearly exhausted. But he\npromised that a road should be made\nas soon at the money could be granted\nand a special warrant obtained for tbe\nwork. He could see very plainly that\nthe development in the province was\nten (old in excess of what was thought\nconsequently the demands for money\non public works hat been very heavy,\nB. R. Atkins pressed the need for\nan itolation hospital tnd said that a\nyear or so ago negotiations had been\nmade with the government for the\nerection of a building, but certain dis\nagreements creeping in, the matter\nwai dropped, and as it was impossible\nIor the Hospital Board to carry out\nthe work he asked il the government\ncould'nt do something to help, The\npremier said that when a city was incorporated, it was its duty to look\nafter health matters, especially local\nones, but seeing the need of a place to\nput patients who were transient and a\ncaute of expense to tl.e city, he said\nthat he would see that tl.e government ivould help the matter out. He\nsaid that B, C. looked altur her health\naffairs tetter than any other province\nin the Dominion and alto that Revelitoke i< second to none in her hospital\ntyiteni. He laid that ho would per\nsonally endeavor lo eet ihe work done\nand now lhat the province's finances\nwerc better the outlook -,vm very\nhopeful. The government were very\nfriendly and took keen interest in\nhealth affairs,\nA vote ol thanks was passed to tho\npremier who replied that he was very\npleased to ho in Revelstoke and would\ncertainly do nil he could to help the\ncity in every possible way. The meeting then terminated.\nFIRE IN THE CITY\nRevelstoke Steam Laundry\nNearly Gutted-Machinery\nMostly Saved.\nA fire alarm was turned in from No.\n9 box at about hall pnst seven on\nSunday evening. The Interior nl the\nbuilding is practically ruined, while\nthe main part ol the root mul walls are\nintact. Tlie cause ol the outbreak is\nts yet unknown, but is supposed to\nhave been caused by ipm-ks or but\nashes from tl.e stove, igniting the\nwoodwork, although then had been\nno fire in tlie building for lofty-eight\nhours.\nThe premises are lolly coveiedby\ninsurance iu the Western (Assurance\nOo. ol Toronto, the policies being\nissued by H. Tl.e\nTe.iton, like the Anglo-Saxon, is seldom carried away on sudden bursts uf\nfeeling, but thoughtful ubservers are\nfor the most part agreed that \"the\nmoiled fist\" will not much longer be a\nlilting symbol of government in Germany. In making these promises\nMr. MoBride recognised that he was\nnot granting us a favor, hut was doing\nonly what we were entitled toby\nright, and no matter to what party-\neach and all ol Ul may belong we lire\nthoroughly alive to the fact that the\npremier has made these promises for\nthe benefit of the province as a province, irrespective of part) ism, and we\nhave every reason to believe lhat the\npromises will be carried out.\nBotn the Liberal nnd Conservative\n(actions in Revelitoke will plainly see\ntions of nuts ol all sorts and Xmas\ndinner deiicacies, Iruit, jellies and\nmince meat, besides an enormous\nChas. Tho hall was well\nlilled witii the premier's friends and\nsupporters, and as lie took his seat on\ntlie platform, was loudly cheered.\nChas. Holten, pr sident uf the association, opened the proceedings, a very\ngood musical programme being carried\nout by tlie Independent Band and\nMessrs. Humphreys, Gait and Veith,\nThe mayor in welcoming tlie prim ier\nsaid that llis visit wnuld bc materially\nfelt and that the matters discussed by\nthe city council and Board of Trade\nwere of vital importance to tlio city;\nthat he had promistd that all the requests aud needs of Kevelstoke would\nbe grunted and that the city hud confidence in hin. and would welcome\nhim again on liis return visit.\nThos. Taylor, M.P.P., said that the\npeople would highly appreciate tlie\npremier's anxiety to help in the city's\ndevelopment and had madeassuranees\nthat the people's requests would be\ngranted. As member Ior tlie riding\nhe welcomed the premier and gave\nhim the hand ol good fellowship, that\nthe presence of Mr. McBride in Rovelstoke showed his willingness to grasp\nthe situation and needs of tlie city.\nOn rising Mr. McBride said that he\nwas pleased to meet the Conservatives\nand to renew his personal connections\nhere. He said that hospitality was\nvery prevalent in the Kootenays and\nthat the gathering tonight was both\npolitical and sociable, since tlie government ivould soon come to lhe\nelectorates for endorsement or condemnation. He said that he had always\ndone his best for the riding to bring\nnbout our development and no man\nwas more ready to meet our demands\nthan he. He knew of the serious\nproblem facing us in the river bank\nand had promised that all further\ndanger should be eliminated; he would\nmake himself responsible in bringing\nabout the work.\nIn speaking of the traffic bridge he\nstated that he waB in communication\nnow with the 0. The government\nhad always looked after the prosperity\nof the province and that the present\ngood timeB were not due to the administration at Ottawa, but to that of\nVictoria. He reviewed the situation\nat the time when the present government came into office saying that the\nprovince was unpopular and capital\nunwilling to aid in the development,\nand then when taking over the reins\nof government they saw how things\nwere and explained to the people the\npossibilities of British Columbia He\neconomized on all tides, cut down expenses in all departments, taxed more\nheavily the railway companies and\nafter a short while the province bogan\nto improve and today stands at tl.e\nat the head of all others in prosperity.\nHo touched upon the assessment and\nichool act, laying that he had Endeavored to lay this burden equally on all\nshoulders. Tl.e business of the province had more than doubled during\ntbe last four years, and that tl.e government tried to be consistent in every\nway and hud economized as much as\npossible. The banks realize tlie\nstability of B. It was a long distance to\nArrowhead and owing to tl.e swiftness\nof the current, Arrowhead would not\nin tlie least be affected.
