The summer trail\nis very much shorter, but is open\nfor only a short time each season.\nWhile crossing the Ootsa we were\novertaken by some wel-known Lardeau men. Eli and George Edge\nand 1> Blaney, with whom we proceeded oil the trail via Cheslata\naround to about the centre of the\nnorth shore of the Ootsa. where we\ncamped for seven days on what was\ndescribed ns \" the best land in the\nOotsa country.'' While there we\nmade daily excursions through the\n\u25a0unrounding country nnd made\nmany observations with a telescope\nfrom the hill-tops. 1 saw many\nsmall patches of fairly good land\namong aspen trees, but no large\nureas of go'd land. The country\nis by no nn nns nn open one. being\nbadly broken Up with hi Is and\nrocky ridges.     On the south shore\nof the lake there appears to be no\nland of anv value. From Information obtained from two 'men\nwho hud wintered there, und from\nthe Indians, I judge the lake to lie\nfrozen for six months of the year.\nnnd there ij patent evidence to\nshow that the average snowfall is\nfairly large\n\" I do not wisli to pose us an\nauthority on hind, hut from information obtained from many parties that were in the Ootsa country\nin search of land, 1 think 1 am safe\nIII saying that nine-tenths of those\nmen will be of the opinion that\nthe reports which have been so\nmuch in circulation ns lo the areas\nand quality of land uml climate in\nthe Ootsa Luke country are, to say\nthe least, very misleading.
