A\ntransportation company is\nbound to provide lor the convenience and safety of thc travelling public, and while the lirsl\npoint may, to some extent, In-\na matter of opinion, thc second\nis fixed by law. It would, in\nany case be the duty of thc city,\nnow that the purchase bylaws\nhave been passed, to exercise all\nreasonable precaution in regard\nto the safety of the public; bui\nsuch precaution is doubly desirable, seeing tliat at thc present\ntime our liability is absolutely\nunlimited. I-'or this reason a-\nlone, I submit that Sunday\nbaseball in North Vancouver,\nshould not and cannot be permitted. Even without baseball\nit will be difficult enough to\nprovide sufficient transportation\nlacilities to keep within the requirements of the law. With\nbaseball added, it is clearly\nquite impossible. The mayor\nis, I understand, at present sole\nmanager, and a grave responsibility will rest on him il he allows the numerical limitations\nimposed by lave to bc recklissh\nviolated. They never get\nin thc open air and wallop a\ngoll ball over the green lulls\nThey do not care (or Imm-ImII\nbecause they do nol understand\nit. Racing in any lorm does\nnot appeal to them. Football\nmakes them ill. They shudder\nat the idea ol two muscular fellows with gloves on their hands.\nThese people arc ill the minority\neverywhere. They are never\nmolested by red blooded people,\nwho, having no appeliu- lor\npink tea, do not count it a\ncrime in the sedentary few. The\nspnitMti.in is willing to allow\nhis neighbor to lead his own life\nin his own way and drink pink\ntea until he chokes. All he asks\nin return is that his nrighl-or\nshall keep his pale nose out ol\nanother man's business or pleasure, as the case may be.\nThe quiet brother is seldom as\ntolerant. His idea ol a ripping\nline evening's entertainment being a battle over a whist table\nor a chess board with a lettuce\nsandwich on thc side, he is unable to understand that another\nsort ol a man might go a different route to Iind his pleasure\nThen, as,a usual thing, he tries\nto put the ball and chain on lus\nlively neighbor. The\nspirit of clean sport will live in\nspite of all the Morris chair athletes.\nThere is a nation which has\nnever produced an athlete, i\nis an old nation, but it has not\nmade any world history in a\nthousand years.
