Last week\nfor instance upon inauguration of the\nfortnightly service the mail was so\nheavy it took the local staff five hours\nto sort it. Had the steamer not an\nextra heavy cargo and had remained in\nport only the customary time, letters\ncould not have been answered which\nwould have meant a wait of another\ntwo weeks.\nOne might easily believe judging by\nthe mail sen ice that this was a remote\ndistrict instead of but a few hour's\nsail from Prince Rupert.\nHowever, unt 1 such time as car own\nservice is aJjnsted urgent communication with the outside is established by\n! way of Hyder, Alaska, a mile away\nwhere they have a weekly service.\nThere are hopes that the mail service\nwill be improved. The postmaster-gen\neral's department has been stirred up\nat least. The Stewart Citizen's Association has been promised that the deplorable state of affairs here will be\nlooked into. If nothing is done this\nsection will have to accept a fortnightly service unless the citizens themselves subsidize a service. The proposal of the authorities is to give the\nservice which the quiet camp of Stewart had to be satisfied with a year ago.\nBut Stewart is a different town today.\nIt is much larger in population and\nbusiness enterprises. At least a weekly service is imperative.\nIt is understood that Capt. McCros-\nkie has offered to deliver the mail here\nat least weekly for approximately\n$1900 for the year. Bidding against\nhim in favor of a fortnightly service is\nSwanson of Prince Rupert who during\nthe Coast strike when this sectien was\nshort of food boosted freight rates\nfrom $7 to $30 a ton. Furthermore,\nhe farmed out his contract and hasn't\nbeen seen here for months. Yet this\nis the person Inspector Fletcher is reported to favor in preference to the\nman who all summer has maintained a\nbi-weekly passenger and freight service between Prince Rupert and Stewart.\nIt has always been a principle, purported at least, that the postoffice system is not conducted for profit, but for\naccommodation and service at cost.\nThe increased postage is still in force\nas a war measure in this country and\nprofits no doubt go to pay for something or other.
