PENNINGTON,\nCommissioner of Teachers' Pensions.\nNovember 24th, 1955. \"TEACHERS' PENSIONS ACT\"\nANNUAL REPORT\nREPORT OF THE BUSINESS DONE IN PURSUANCE OF THE \"TEACHERS'\nPENSIONS ACT\" DURING THE PERIOD JANUARY 1st, 1954, TO\nDECEMBER 3 1st, 1954.\nSection 4.\u2014Superannuation-allowance payments pursuant to this section amounted\nto $107,857.89. The Minister of Finance reimbursed the Fund by the amount of\n$71,932.24 in accordance with the provisions of subsection (4). The increases pursuant to subsection (5), amounting to $35,925.65, were paid from the Service Pensions\nAccount. As at December 31st, 1954, there were 138 persons in receipt of allowances\nunder this section.\nSection 6.\u2014Contributions received from teachers amounted to $1,860,074.59,\nconsisting of ordinary contributions of $1,561,986.45, special 1-per-cent contributions\nof $296,499.84, and individual contributions for service-pension credits pursuant to\nsubsection (6) of $1,588.30. As at December 31st, 1954, there were 9,261 active\ncontributors to the Fund.\nSection 8.\u2014Employer contributions received pursuant to this section amounted to\n$1,769,715.04.\nSection 11.\u2014Superannuation allowances were granted to thirty-seven teachers who\nattained retirement age. For analysis see statements of comparative statistics appended\nhereto.\nSection 15.\u2014Superannuation allowances were granted to three teachers who had\nbecome totally and permanently disabled.\nSection 16 (1) and (2).\u2014Superannuation allowances were granted to the dependent\nin the case of four teachers who died while still in service.\nSection 16 (4) and (5).\u2014Refunds amounting to $5,405.30 were made in the case\nof nine teachers who died while still in service.\nSection 18 (1) and (2).\u2014Refunds amounting to $162,426.13 were made to 481\nteachers who left the service of their employers.\nSection 23.\u2014Administration expenses paid from the Fund amounted to $36,051.36.\nSection 26.\u2014During the year two meetings of the Teachers' Pensions Board were\nheld, at which twenty-six individual cases were dealt with.\nSection 31.\u2014The securities held by the Trustees on December 31st, 1954, are set\nout in Schedule No. 1 of this Report.\nDuring the 1954 Session of the Legislature, amendments were made to the \" Teachers'\nPensions Act,\" including the following:\u2014\n(1) Allowances granted prior to 1941 were recalculated in accordance with\nthe new service-pension formula.\n(2) Allowances granted since January 1st, 1941, were increased by recalculating them on the new service-pension formula of $30 per annum for each\nof the first twenty years of service and $40 per annum for each year of\nservice over twenty years.\n(3) All increases were made effective July 1st, 1954.\nR.
