E. Shaw, Secretary Board of Trade, Revelstoke.\nAttorney-General's Office, 13th April, 1897.\nSir,\u2014I have the honour, by direction, to acknowledge the receipt of your communication\nof the 8th inst., in which you call attention to the resolution of a public meeting held on the\n7th inst. for the discussion of the subject of the title to lands at Revelstoke.\nI have the honour to point out, and am glad that the opportunity is afforded me by your\ncommunication, that the Dominion Government jointly with the Provincial have taken all\nsteps in their power to settle the title of the Revelstoke lands.\nThe arrangement arrived at is that any person claiming a title to lands in dispute, may\nobtain a Dominion Crown Grant by simply communicating with this Department and executing a release, which will be prepared here and forwarded to him for execution.\nPublic notice of this has been advertised in Revelstoke, and circulars calling attention to\nit mailed to every person who was supposed to be interested in any lot, whether claiming under\nMr. Farwell or under any other person.\nIn response to this advertisement and these circulars only four have sent in any claims.\nIt would therefore appear that the parties concerned, viz., the owners of the lots, take no\ninterest whatever in obtaining an absolute and indisputable title, such as is offered.\nIf the interest which you state is taken by the citizens can be turned to account by persuading those who have titles or claims to any lots in Revelstoke to advise this Department of\nthat fact, your efforts will not be in vain. But until the parties interested respond to our\noffers, you will see that it is absolutely impossible to proceed further.\nThe few claims that have been sent in are being promptly attended to, and others will\nhave similar treatment as soon as received.\nTrusting that our efforts will meet with the co-operation of the Board which you represent,\nI have, etc.,\nArthur G. Smith,\nDeputy Attorney-General 998 Re Title to Revelstoke Town Lots. 1897\nDeputy Attorney-General to G. E. Shaw, Secretary Board of Trade, Revelstoke.\nAttorney-General's Office, 14th April, 1897.\nSir,\u2014I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 10th.\ninstant, in which you forward a copy of a letter received by Mr. Davies, Inspector of the\nProvincial Building and Loan Association, from the Deputy Minister of the Interior under\ndate the 31st March ult.\nThe letter is perfectly correct in stating that the Registrars have received instructions to\nregister deeds to lands at Revelstoke, and such instructions were contained in a circular from\nthis Department under date the 25th September last.\nYou will therefore see that the statement contained in the letter, a copy of which you\nenclosed, that \" there has been great delay on account of the refusal of the Government of\nBritish Columbia to issue instructions to the local Registrars to register titles granted by the\nDominion for lands within the railway belt, but 1 believe that the necessary instructions have\nnow been issued to the Registrars by the Provincial authorities, and that this difficulty is a\nthing of the past, so far at least as lands in the Townsite of Revelstoke are concerned,\" hardly\nplaces the matter in a fair light before you. The only difficulty this Department has had in\nthe question of the registration of titles, lies in the fact that we are unable to procure correct\ndescriptions of the lands granted by the Dominion.\nThe instructions of the 26th September, 1896, were given to cover the registration of all\nlands which the Registrars were sure were in the belt, and the titles of which were otherwise\ngood. These no doubt have been complied with all along, and the present difficulty is as stated\nto you in my letter of yesterday.\nI have, etc.,\nArthur G.
