The opponents of the Liberal party\nbad prophesied lhat Great Brit-\nian would never revoke her commercial treaties with Belgium\nand Germany iu order to allow\nSir Wilfrid's policy of preferential duties within the Empire to\ngo into effect. It was, the speaker be-\nnot given to making promises,\nbecause il was ofteu difficult tn\ncarry them out, but he saw the\nnecessity of keeping up the navigation fur as long a period as\npossible each year, and he would\nrepresent tlie matter in lhe Minister of public works so as In\nImve Hie Governmont.Engineor\ngo nver llie river Iliis year and\nmake uu estimate of the work\nnecessary, lie hoped llial it\nwould not prove Ion costly, and\nllial they would gel Hie Improvements Ihey were looking for.\nIn concluding Mr. Bostock said\nthat in Canada the Canadians\nhad a splendid holitage, and he\nadvised those Americans who\nhad como in here to live to become citizens of the country so\nthat they would be able to exercise the electoral franchise and\ntake a part in the direction of\nthe affairs of the nation (loud\napplause).\nHe then stated that he was\nready to reply to any questions\non political topics that might be\nasked, but none being made, the\nmeeting closed with a vote of\ntlianks to Mr. Bostock, movud\nby Dr. Watt, and seconded by\nJ. Bul lhis,\nlike all others of the predictions\nof evil that was to follow if the\nLiberals got into power, had\nbeen abundantly shown to be\nuntrue. The railway will bo\nbuilt to Fort Steele within a few\nmonihs (loud cheers), and built\nunder such favorable conditions\nthat the Gvernnient are empowered to control the passenger\nand freight rates in the interests\nof the people (renewed cheering). Tlie Liberal party was a\nparly of action, not of words or\nof promises made to be broken.\nIn the past it hud been charged\nthat the C. P. Railway Company\nhad controlled the Dominion\nGovernment. J. A. Finch, the West\nKootenay mining man, recently\nsaid to a Spokesman-Review reporter: \"Tho exchange iiuota-\ntion is the real price. The brokers have got together and tixeil\nup a method of naming a 'brokers' price,' which is really no\nprice at all. If you ask a broker\nabout it he will lell you it is the\nprice for a largo quantity. If\nyou offer to buy at that price he\nwill tell you it is not the carload\nfigure, but the price for large\nlots, and if lie is pinned down\nclosely he will refuse to sell at\nlho price quoted. The exchange\nprice tells the true state of the\nmarket,\"\n,). li. MoArlhor, in the Kalso\nKootenaian, commenting on the\nabove, says: \"The discrepancy\nbetween the broker's price and\nthe exchange price now is nearly $10 per ton. The smelters\npay the mine owner for his lead\non the basis of the broker's\nprice, which, according to Mr.\nFinch is a \"fake\" price. In view\nof the increasing price for lead\nand its lessened production it\nseems to me the time has arrived\nwhen the mine owners of West\nKootenay ought to get together\nand insist that in all contracts\nmade for their ores the 'exchange' price for lead should\ngovern and not the 'brokers'\nprice. And while they are on\nthe subject of revision the deductions of 10 per cent on lead\nand 5 per cent on silver for\nsmelting should be adjusted t.\nthe new conditions. Many years\nago, when these deductions were\nfixed upon, these percentages\nrepresented actually the loss\nsustained. Since then, however,\nowing to Improved machinery\nand methods used in .smelting,\nthe loss on lead is oven less than\n5 per cent and for silver less\nthan _\u2022! per cent, but the mine\nowner gets no benefit from these\nImprovements in smelting. Why\nshould he pay for a loss which\nis not iu truth and iu fact a loss\nat all? England is now a buyer\non our market for our silver-lead\nores and is offering us oxcood-\nly good terms, Why would not\nthis be a very favorable time to\nconsider' -and settle these matter's? ' The mine owner alone\nshould not bear the loss in all\nthese things as well as the decreased price in silver.\"\nTwo Pilot Bay men were recently prospecting on Crawford\nj Creek, about four miles from\nCrawford Bay, they came in contact with a large cinnamon bear.\nOne of the men mado for a tree,\nthe bear followed and caught\nhim by the log and inflicted a\nsuvoro wound.
