'Port Steele has 'many advantages to recommend if as an outfitting point for those who intend to prospect iii the district during tlie coming summer. Fort, Steele merchants are in a position.to supply any order that can be tilled in any eity or town in the The attention of.the home seeker has been attracted to the Kootenay valley, and the people are ' coming to appreciate, the agricultural possibilities of the valley. Here are to be found all the elements required to constilute a 'rich and progressive district, consisting of rich agricultural soil, maguiliciMU herbage for cattle, sheep"and horses, a said; .brions climate, favorable to health, fruitgrowing, boundless forests of timber, unfold wealth in all the minerals of commerce, such as gold, silver, lead, iron and copper, petroleum and immense areas of coal. Nature has surely'endowed this valley "with a lavish hand.' ' * , It is a sportsman's,paradise; mountain goat'and' sheep, all kinds of deer, elk,^caribou and ^b'oar are abundant, as well as swan,' goose, duck and prairie chicken. The mountain streams are well stocked' with'' trout and provide excellent sport for the, angler. The Kootenay Valley ,offers special inducements to settlers who have sufficient, slock and implements to carry on operations with, and there is no doubt, but thai the country itself will meet all the requirements ol such in every respect. The Kootenay valley contains' all the, elements necessary for successful farming and. stock raising and' is unequalled in natural resources. Fernie News. Kllllll till' l.'H'l' PITS'. Placer gold was first, discovered on Wild Horse crook in 18(58, by old Bob Dore and his associates. The Imperial Coal and Coke Company has acquired large coal measure's1 not ftir from the town of Michel. Tho secrecy and mystery with which the business affairs of the Sullivan Mining Company has always been hedged about may in time be thrown aside. The development of the Mammoth group of mines, on Goat Mountain, is proving most satisfactory. When a mining district has such mines as Ihe St. Eugene caj-iable of producing o0,000 tons of silver-lead ore yearly, it deserves more than passing notice. Placer mining and the quest of placer gold has been the thing, the vital thing, among the gold- diggers on Wild Horse creek during the past few years. Not since the old days, the days of the early sixties, has this pursuit been so vigorously and pro lit ably followed. Old miners declare lhat there will be more virgin gold taken out of Wild Horse and Perry creek this season than for many years in the past. A.fin mine with plenty .of.'tin ore iii it located any where in British Columbia would be a far more -va.lua.ble property . than a gold mine, with few exceptions.. Tin is harder', than lead and softer than gold. It nielfs af'-M2 degrees F. It is not sensibly volatilized at. high temperatures, though at a strong red heat, it- einils white fumes. From reports that have reached Fort Steele,, we believe that preparatory work in the placer camps has given very satisfactory results' during the past .vinter, and it is probable'lhat liood, reports will eome=fr_om -.all placer camps in the district during the coining summer.
