Metallic iron in a more or less pure condition is met with in all parts of the world, but the supply of metal in a pure state is wholly inconsiderable, and tlie discovoryof large beds of heina- i,ite iron in Ihe Fori1, Steele district is of such importance that investors and promoters are' already looking towards this district with a view of ascertaining the extent of the recent discoveries. During 1 ho" past month largo beds of hematite' iron ore have beon< discovered and lo- cated on Bull river. The records at the Government office show that IH claims have been recoi*d- ti ed. The' locators have been prospecting the claims and have shown up,a large strong vein of at least f)0 feet in width," having a depth, aS'far-asdmown of over 1000 feet.' Three other, veins nearly as large as the big vein have also been'prospecled.' It is said that the ore 'is of a superior character, an analysis shows that tho ore contains 55 to , i , 00% iron, 2% manganese, phosphorus a trace,. sulphur trace, and about J(i% carbon. ' -'- The 'fact, ' as - the analysis shows, that, the jron ore contains but a small amount of phosphorus and sulphur, other foreign substances in very, small quantities, indicates that tho oro J <. i- i- is of a superior quality. . Largo bodies of iron have been discovered at or near Kitchener in 'the south-western portion of the district. Some twenty claims have been located. The claims are, nqw being prospected by means of a diamond drill, and it is roporled that there is a vast amount of jibsuporior ore located* by tho drill. Iron in large quantities arc known ' to exist on Wild Horse creek, an assay from a property now located went as high as 00% iron. The discovery of these large beds of'iron is one of special importance to the district. With' coal .and coke, lime i'or fluxing, and the close proximity of water power, transportation facilities assured by the north and south railway, in the near future, there is no doubt but that the production of iron will be one of the mosi important industries in, South East Kootenay. A motion will be made at this hearing on .the part of the B. C. Southern to have the injunction continued. At the1 last ^session of the Provincial Legislature ' the Crow's Nest Southern Railway Company ; secured a charter to build 'a 'railway from the inter-' national boundary, via the Kootenay and Elk rivers to ' the coal areas at Michel,0- Coal and Morrisey creeks, this' line' to connect at the boundary, with8 a line from Jennings, Montana,^ on the Great Northern Railway to the boundary at, Tobacco Plains. An application was also made to the Dominion Parliament at its last session for a charter covering the same routes as that applied for in the Provincial House. After passing through the preliminary stage, and before its third reading .in the House of Commons, the promoters withdrew the application by the consent of the House, on account of certain stringent conditions which were to be attached and which were unfavorable to the Crow's Nest Company. The Crow's Nest Company having completed its arrangements for a line to the south decided to build under its Provincial charter. Surveys were made and plans filed at Victoria on June 19th for a spur up Morrisey' creek. At this time the C. P. R. also had an outfit in the field surveying a line up Morrisey creek, and in the race for completion of surveys and filing of plans it was thought that the C.P.R. came out behind but according to affidavits filed, it appears that tho latter company, filed their plans with the Minister of Railways at Ottawa on June (5th. nearly two weeks ahead of the Crow's Nest Company, and the C.P.R. again filed plans at, Nelson on the 24th of June. Both companies commenced grading, the Crow's Nest Company on the norfh side of Morrisey creek, the C.P.R. on the south side, the former company working on higher ground interfered with the workings of the latter company, who immediately issued its formal declaration of war, in filing an application, and securing an injunction, enjoining the. Crow's Nest Company from passing through or .entering upon lands owned by a company crossing into,, a foreign country, "or adjoining' province , must secure the con-"' sent of the Dominion Govern- " menr. it is said that a Provincial charter carries no such privileges, that roads have been, constructed under a Provincial charter and crossed info' a foreign country is a fact, but in those cases no objections'were recorded, but in' this fight between'the C. P.P. and the Crow's Nest Southern, "which will be a competitor of the C.-P. R.," the C.P. SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1901. "No Enemies to Punish- Special,Friends' to Serve. " -No RECOMMENDEO immtmmmmBmaummmamm BY PHYSICIANS. I T is with _ great satisfaction that we can this' year again point to the Minister- of Mines report as proof of our rapidly increasing importance as a min- ing community. *' * * Our total output-is .not large, only when taken in comparison with that, of some of the older mining .districts of the Province. and when it is remembered that lode mining in the Port Steele district is the growth of the last four, years. And ,the output of, nearly $3,000,000 for the past year, 1900, as against $523,606 in "1899, speak, eloquently of the growth of mining in this district The production in placer gold *'; also shows a remarkable increase -.and it is estimated that -the , present year .will show a still , further increase. > i: - ' * *' * , The most notable feature of the year has been the production j ' of silver-lead in this district, from 881,167 pounds in 1899, lb 38,495,079 in 1900, 'has earned for the Fort Steele district the right to be considered tho silver- lead producing center' of ihe Province. Copper mines in this district- are yet in their infancy, that copper is found in paying quantities cannot be denied, yet for lack of sufficient means of transportation, this production has not yet reached a producing stage. , . * * * it- Iron ore has been discovered in large beds,in this district, and of a superior quality. Prospecting and the development of this portion of the , mineral industry has commenced, and we can confidently expect that in the near future it will be one of ,the most important industries in the district. Public School exam ill ations were held on Friday of last week, and were attended by a goodly number of citizens. The visitors to the morning session beheld a large array of bright and happy faces, and listened with rapt attention to the exercises of the members of tlie junior department. Miss Bailey has gathered in, all tho wee tots of the town, and has conducted in a, manner worthy of 'much commendation a kindergarten during the afternoon sessions of the past term. A politeness class was a pleasing feature of the examination. , Those new ideas are fraught with promise of great good to the children und to the community, and give evidence of the proficiency of the teacher. The senior division, in the afternoon, likewise gave ood indications of faithful work on the part of Mr. Tompkins. The school was not present in full attendance, owing to several pupils having dropped out during the past- few weeks. This section' oii the school suffers much from irregular attendance and lack of punctuality on the part of some of, the children.' Parents owe it'to their children to- require of them every day a punctual attendance ol school. ' Mr. Tompkins had the pleasure of presenting to' Miss May Jennings the diploma, of graduation and of admission to the High School.
