CONCRETE'S RESISTANCE TO BLOWS SHOWN BY TESTS . Among, other valuable lessons learned during the war was some interest-' ing knowledge regarding the resistance of .concrete to blows, somej of the most ..valuable information in this respect coming from'our late enemies, tbe Germans. The results-of heavy trucking and constant' battering on some, of" the thinner concrete roads in use'in -wartime is adding weight- to the growing opinion that concrete roads should be made thicker to meet the' demand for modern motor traffic. This fact gives additional importance to. the. view of numerous engineers that tha.failures of concrete under such'circumstances is due to fatigue, which, eventually results in.fracture. ■ -*, ;: * • -iV .< . - . ■■ , r - ■ - ,--.*: In this connection there is special interest in the exhaustive tests made ■by a noted German'expert, "Dr. Ras- cow, to determine, ther resistance" of concrete to blows ;that tests are excellent 'for judging the comparative values of cement and, concrete ' for, ^ordinary building. purposes. Yet when these materials are to be used under conditions where they will be subjected to repeated* blows or vibrations, as for instance, in concrete roads, a third test should be added. Dr.-Pascow worked on an elaborate investigation in order to determine the value of a test in which a 2%-inch cube of the material is subjected to a large number of blows applied, by.a miniature pile driver. Atrthe, same time, he* investigated the minimum height from which a weight must be dropped on a block of cement.mortar or cocrete in order to crack it at the first blow. , These experiments showed that resistance to blows depends more - on the elacticity and touchness of the aggregate, and also on the hardening period, rather than on the cement, provided enough cement is used to form a suitable binder. Curiously enough, while the crushing and tensile strengths increased with the age of the materials, its resistance to blows decreased. The tests and conclusions arrived at by this undoubted authority indicate that there is no definite relationship either between the crushing or tensil-T strength and the resistance of the material to •_. falling weight. Dr. Pascow's death occurred before he was able to entirely complete the tests he set out to accomplish, but the results of his labors have been published and sent to eminent engineers all over the world. Mr.' Preston announced that it was planned to give contractors a month or possibly" five weeks in which to submit tenders for this important un- ciertakmg. Some minor changes were made in the original plans for the bridge foundations .which Mr. Pres- i.on took east with'him. These changes will necessitate the taking of certain soundings on the bridge site, especially at one end, which will be done Rt once. When these figures are available and the" alterations made in the preTio-tfs' plans by the city engineer's staff, it is expected.by that time the formal order-in-council will have been passed and the way bill be clear for the calling of tenders- While in the east, Mr. Preston first visited Montreal where he conferred with the C, P. R. engineers, and afterwards visited Ottawa and laid t&e bridge plans before the Dominion Railway Board,, securing their sanction for the. plans and permission"-to call tenders as soon as the bridge order- in-council was passed. Then Mr. Preston went south to confer with officials of the Strauss Bridge Company, specialists in bascule bridges, where he inspected the plans of the big bascule lift span and also saw the actual operation of some of the big bascule bridges in Chicago and vicinity. His trip is expected to obviate a great deal of'any future.delay in the progress of the Victoria bridge project. A. H. Mitchell . B. J. Mitchell A. H. BIDS ARE INVITED ON NEW FERRY LANDINGS Tenders are now being invited by the public work departnpent of the provincial government for the construction of ferry landings at both Woodward's Landing and Ladner on the Fraser river. Bids will be received up to noon of Monday, .October 11, and pians and specifications may be obtained at the office of the district engineer, court house, Vancouver, or at the5 public works department, Victoria. The usual ten per cent, deposit must accompany each tender. New ferry landlngsrhave been badly needed at both these places for some time owing to the constantly increasing amount of motor and other vehicular traffic acrss the Fraser river at this point. The landings in" each case are to be of the floating, type secured by piles, as owing to the varying changes of water level due to both tides and the state of the river, it is impracticable to have a fixed landing.
