We were shocked to
find a band that subverts punk,
while being part of it, all without preaching. Coming to Vancouver to promote their latest
album Kiss Kiss Kill Kill, Day
spoke with us about the trial
and error of rock and roll.
U: You never outright talk
about politics, culture or current
events. Why does your song-writing style veer away from these
topics that other rock artists
embrace?
PD: Seriously, you gotta understand...the Horrorpops started in the 1990s, back in 1996,
as a reaction to all the boring
shit in the entertainment industry. We're talking the heyday of
bands like Nirvana. Bands that
went on stage, looking like they
crawled out of the gutter. Bands
that didn't put on a show, and
just stood there with their eyes
fucking closed. So we just tried
to do something that actually
entertains people.
U: What do you think about
other artists who might rant off
on politics or religion? NOFX, for
Horrorpops are all about fun. Reacting to a plethora of political punk, the band takes pride in being anything but serious, courtesy of the horrorpops
example.
PD: Personally, I won't do it.
Starting out in the mid-90s there
was another band that was very
popular called Rage Against the
Machine. Now talk about a band
that stuffs political opinions
down your fucking throat. But
you know, growing up in Scandinavia...the things that kids are
just starting to discover, I was
taught in grade two.
U: Do you think being a punk
rocker is considered rebellious
anymore at all by society?
PD: Not anymore. The only
thing that's possible is to inspire
the Midwest! In my world, you
can't really be controversial
anymore.
U: How do you feel playing
the Warped Tour, which many
would criticize for being the definition of corporate domination
in punk music?
PD: You know, because of
the tour's commercialization, it
means that kids can pay $ 15 and
see 60 bands. Can you be against
that? I can't be against that!
U: What would you say was the
best crowd you ever played to?
PD: Canadians!
U: Don't give me that bullshit!
PD: *laughs* No, it's true!
They've got a great combina
tion of the US and Europe, in
the sense that in the US you're
playing for a bunch of kids on
crazy hormones. When you're in
Europe you're playing to a bunch
of adults where there's alcohol.
But when you go into Canada
you have alcohol and hormones,
so it's a perfect mix! \\a
The Horrorpops play Richards on Richards this Sunday,
October 5.
Falling Woman is a sexy struggle |Ayr UM " ~Z
° J_ Mobile concert suiters
from low attendance
The falling woman will never stop falling—she is imprisoned by your gaze, courtesy of Christine d'onofrio
by Trevor Melanson
Culture Editor
In a local art gallery atop three
flights of stairs there is a falling woman—her dress billows
higher than Monroe's and covers her face. Left behind are
her legs, kicking wildly, and
her nakedness. She is Christine
D'Onofrio's "Falling Woman."
D'Onofrio realizes "that the
piece can be quite uncomfortable
for some viewers, exciting for
others, and even all too familiar
for a few." This is intentional; the
piece deals with contradictions.
They are emotional contradictions felt by you, the viewer.
The first details I noticed were
her struggling and her exceptionally sexy legs. Should I have
felt guilty or turned on?
The piece is projected on a 16-
foot-wide screen, and yet it's still
difficult to find one flaw on the
woman's immaculate lower body.
Maybe this shouldn't matter. It's
easy to imagine D'Onofrio's video
riding on an ocean of feminist
waves, and certainly it is, but
there's also something atypical
being shown—a perfect body.
And we're expected to stare.
"I do not wish to control the
gaze," said D'Onofrio. "It's primal instinct." She wants us to be
attracted to the body, not empa-
thetic toward it. She's proving
a point: a woman's submission
can be sexually appealing—for
him and for her.
This raises questions that
consider how a woman might
dominate her own submission.
Or if she even can.
Of course, don't take my
word for it. "Falling Woman" is
showing until October 18 at the
Republic Gallery on Richards
Street. %
Mobile rocked a pretty modest crowd at Maclnnes field on Wednesday. Attendance was low, unless you count the people who passed
by on their way to the bus loop. If you do count those people, it was
a resounding success! The people who took in the whole show did
so mostly sitting down (with the exception of a single topless man
in canvas pants, who was wonderful) until that last song, "Message
in a Bottle" by The Police. I, for one, can't figure out why the band
wasn't received more enthusiastically—Wednesday at 4pm is the
ideal time for a rock concert.
KEEGAN BURSAW PHOTO/THE UBYSSEY 4 | CULTURE
THE UBYSSEY WWW.UBYSSEY.CA
OCTOBER 3, 2Q08
Join the Revolution
Or perhaps just join The Ubyssey
Volunteers® ubyssey.ca
SUB 24
1
i
The Church in Joyous Obedience:
Biblical Expositions
Walter Brueggemann www.regent-college.edu/laing
host: John G. After 40 years of
photographing street scenes in
Vancouver, his images of this
city have become as common
to photographers as the totem
poles in Stanley Park.
Born in Germany, Herzog
moved to Vancouver in the
1950s. He separated himself
from other photographers by
shooting mostly in Kodachrome,
a colour slide film that was hard
to turn into prints. This limited his ability to exhibit because
"making Cibachrome prints was
not feasible. Itwas almost impossible for me to make a profit selling the prints." Thus, although
his collection of slides continued
to grow, his work remained in
the dark for decades.
However, this initial margin-
alization helped to turn Herzog
into a living legend. His images
were taken decades before they
were finally shown in galleries, which inevitably turned his
exhibitions into colorful odes to
nostalgia.
Moreover, anyone who attended Herzog's fantastic retrospective at the Vancouver Art
Gallery last year understands
that there is something very personal about his work. He allows
us to glimpse into the private
life of his subjects, making us all
voyeurs of life in an epoch that is
gone but not forgotten.
Herzog explained that photography is about looking, about
waiting, and mocked people who
carry a bag full of expensive
lenses, saying, "the picture has
to be in your head, not in your
camera bag." He underlined the
importance of concentrating on
a moment, on a sudden detail
that makes an otherwise irrelevant scene unique. With this,
Herzog revealed his place in the
long tradition of documentary
photographers who, like Cartier-
Bresson, casually roamed the
streets waiting for the instant
precis to capture a unique moment forever.
Considering the inherent
difficulty of shooting people on
the streets, Herzog was quick to
explain that it is imperative to
look for body language, which
includes clothing. Stopping
the projector at a picture of a
woman with a cigarette in her
hand, he said that first impressions matter because humans
automatically make judgments
of the people they see, and
thus, a photograph has to capture a gesture or a detail that
gives a strong first impression.
He then added, that "if you look
long enough, you can find vitality anywhere."
When asked about the risks
of photographing strangers,
Herzog shared that "people have
shouted at me, people have told
me to get away, people have told
me to get off their property, and
people have threatened me with
calling the police." He suggested
that we "shoot first, and ask questions later....
"To me, the city is a stage and
the people on the streets are all
actors....We need to record how
people look in their natural state
[because] it's the reality of how
we look." Otherwise, we will lose
our real history.
Lastly, "Don't photograph
landscapes, everybody does it
and nobody cares." \\a News
Editors: Stephanie Findlay and Justin McElroy | E-mail: news@ubyssey.ca
October 3,2008 \\ Page S
Insite in focus: politics mar educated debate
The science supports the effectiveness ofthe safe injection site. Will voters?
By Cynthia Khoo
News Writer
The separation of church
and state has long been a
fundamental aspect of Canadian government. What
about the separation of state and
laboratory?
Since its inception in 2003,
Insite, Vancouver's supervised
injection site for drug addicts in
the Downtown Eastside (DTES),
has become a lightning rod for
controversy, ethical debates, and
clashes between politicians and
scientists.
According to research scientist
and UBC professor Dr Thomas
Kerr, Canada's growing politici-
zation of science and scientific
research has to stop. "Anyone who
thinks that Insite should be closed
is putting ideology ahead of science and the basic principles of
public health."
Insite has repeatedly risen as
a point of contention between the
Conservative government and the
three other major parties competing in British Columbia this
election. Stephen Harper and his
party oppose Insite—at the Canadian Medical Associations annual
conference in Montreal in August
Health minister Tony Clement
said, "Insite may in some small
subset of cases slow the death
spiral of a deadly drug habit, but it
does not reverse it. I do not regard
this as a positive health outcome."
The Liberal Party, Green Party,
and New Democratic Party (NDP)
all wish to see the site continued
and its facilities expanded.
Liberal Hedy Fry has been in
office since 1993, having been MP
for Vancouver Centre through the
long, slow evolution of Insite from
vision to reality. "[Insite] saves
lives, it decreases the spread of
HIV/AIDS infections, it's helping people who are in desperate
circumstances, and it's helping
public order....In three years, the
results showed exactly what we
wanted them to show."
Multiple studies and reports
have indicated the effectiveness
of Insite since its beginning. According to the Vancouver Coastal
Health web page, citing studies
from peer-reviewed science journals such as British Medical Journal and The Lancet, Insite has reduced drug paraphernalia in city
streets, increased the number of
people seeking treatment, reduced
needle-sharing, and successfully
prevented many overdose deaths
and hospital visits.
Vancouver Centre NDP candidate and UBC professor Michael
Byers has confidence in the scientific community's support of Insite: "As an academic researcher,
I trust the wide range of scientific
criticism. I don't think there's any
question it's an effective program
that should be continued and built
upon."
Vancouver Centre Green Party
candidate Adrienne Carr also supports Insite: "Our support for Insite
is part of our own approach to the
four-pillar approach [treatment,
prevention, harm reduction, enforcement] to the drug issue. It's
also part of our compassionate
approach, making sure those who
are most vulnerable in our society
have the support they need."
Despite such support, the To-
The Insite safe injection site stalls. With health care professionals nearby, addicts are offered a chance for rehabilitation after injection, courtesy of insite
ries remain steadfast in their opposition to Insite. Instead of making the site permanently legal, they
favour a constitutional exemption.
Shortly before June 2008, when
the most recent extension was set
to expire, the BC Supreme Court
ruled the exemption permanent,
which allows Insite to operate
indefinitely.
In response, Tony Clement
promised to appeal the decision.
The appeal will take place in April
2009. "While I would quickly
assert that people at Insite have
the best of intentions, I think the
site itself represents a failure of
public policy, indeed, of ethical
judgment," Clement said in the
Vancouver Courier.
The health minister was
condemned for his criticism of
Insite: "Is it ethical for healthcare professionals to support the
distribution of drugs that are of
unknown substance, or purity or
potency—drugs that cannot be legally prescribed?"
Vancouver Centre Conservative candidate Lome Mayencourt's
website says, "Insite is only a
small part of what's needed to
actually get long-term results for
those with addiction and mental
health challenges. Harm reduction is but one of the Four Pillars
and we need them all to succeed."
Mayencourt is a former provincial
Liberal, and is himself a former
supporter of Insite.
At the same time, other candidates stress that Insite is beneficial because it deals with harm
reduction.
"What [harm reduction] means
is you protect [drug addicts] from
the worst things that can happen
to them while you're helping them
to get better," said Fry. "I often
believe the rhetoric of the Harper
government means they don't
think the lives of drug addicts are
worth saving."
Dr Kerr, who won the 2007
Canadian Institute of Health Research Award, is frustrated with
the lack of confidence shown in the
scientific work regarding Insite.
"Pull your head out of the
sand, take a look at the research,
listen to the scientific and medical
community who stood behind this
body of research and called for
the continuation and expansion of
this initiative."
Dr Kerr's opinion is shared
by Mark Townsend, who is
involved with Insite on behalf
of PHS Community Services
Society. "I think it's [a result of
Stephen Harper's] evangelical,
Christian, very conservative,
simplistic view of the world. In
his world it's very, very clear
that people can just say no, that
if we just get them into treatment that everything will be
okay." He added, "What it really
illustrates is political interference with public health....It's
like listeria, or SARS, or super-
bugs: you really need to listen to
the people who know about stuff
when these things come up, and
not listen to your ideology."
INSITE AT UBC
The Alma Mater Society has been
a steadfast advocate of Insite, recently passing a motion affirming
their support. AMS VP External
Stefanie Ratjen was quoted saying,
"This show of support is important
because Insite provides people
with drug addiction the chance to
access basic healthcare, detoxification treatment, and has prevented
over 1000 deaths...it is the government of Canada's social responsibility to continue providing this
invaluable, lifesaving service."
In addition, the Integrated Sciences Student Association (ISSA)
held their 2008 annual conference with Insite with the politici-
zation of science as the conference
theme.
According to ISSA president
Ricardo Bortolon, "We only had
one person, the Conservative rep,
who was against Insite, so there
was dialogue but there wasn't a
lot of changing of perspectives
for people, mostly education and
insight.
"You could see the response to
the conference...it's not just a science thing, but a fundamental way
to address the [drug] issue."
Commenting on the political
controversy surrounding Insite,
Bortolon said that, "If you look at
the continuum, on the right, people generally fault drug users for
being addicts, and they try to help
them by breaking the 'drug cycle.'
As you go left, you get more people
who attribute drug addiction to
a contextual thing, to poverty, to
more societal causes, and a lot
of people don't want to address
those causes because it'll take a lot
more fundamental policy. In context, though, even the right wing in
Canada is really on the left."
However, not all UBC students
are behind Insite. Fourth-year
English student Kenneth Dodge
explained, "I think Insite is a way
to numb the public into accepting
the situation of drug addiction in
the DTES. Most proponents have
no or little experience with homeless people and want a quick way
to prevent people from dying. But
the truth is that people on drugs
are like the walking dead, and that
there are no 'safe' injections."
OCTOBER 14: THE ELECTION
As Townsend sees it, Insite itself
may not play a major role in this
election, but will help to highlight
the contrast between the major
parties. What he is most concerned with is continuation of the
injection site, no matter which
party comes to power.
"Despite all this public and
media attention on Insite, have
we done much besides that? We
haven't, and that's disheartening,"
Townsend said.
Which brings us back to the
original question of science and
the state. How much say should
the latter have in the "innovations"
ofthe former?
According to Dr Kerr, "The
Conservative government has
been criticized by scientists
from many disciplines including environmental protection,
reproductive technology, and
HIV research. The federal Conservative government has taken
a number measures such as
closing the Office ofthe National Science Advisor...and attacking scientists whose research is
inconsistent with their views.
"Although science has long
been politicized in the United
States, this level of politicization
of science is unprecedented in
Canada, and it's something that
Canadians should be very concerned about." \\i
Call for Nominations f
Killam Teaching
Awards
Every year the Faculty of Science
awards five Killam Teaching Prizes to
acknowledge excellence in undergraduate teaching and to promote the importance
of science education. Dave Boyd
punched in from the Calgary
one-yard line several plays later.
The point after brought the score
to 9-8. The rest of the half was
uneventful as Calgary went into
the locker room holding the slim
one-point lead.
The third quarter began and
ended with little happening offensively. Like a pit,
it's dark and filthy; the bathrooms, in particular, are grungy and
wet—not uncharacteristic of a swamp. And in its midst there is
a sunken dance floor, a pit people walk around or through most
days ofthe week.
It's a lot of wasted space on nights when no one is dancing.
One would think tables could be moved onto the dance floor to
meet the demands of busy nights. One would be disappointed.
In spite ofthe Pit Pub being the manifestation of its derogatory
name, it's pretty damn popular. Wednesday nights are known for
ridiculous lineups that take hours to get through—and there's no
guarantee you'll get in. Such is the luxury of being the only "club"
on campus.
What's worse, if the bouncers stopped allowing those with
"charitable donations" through the back door, the commoners
around front might stand a better chance.
The problem has grown out of hand. We have been, or seen,
those considering this alternative means of entry. It has become
so institutionalized that there is often a going rate, and it's not
cheap. There are no attempts to even conceal these transactions;
bribery has become normal and even acceptable.
What's sad is how easily preventable the scenario is. If the
managers gave a damn, they could catch bribe-taking bouncers
red-handed. And it should be grounds for real punishment. After
all, it's entirely counterintuitive to their work. Bouncers are meant
to be policing us, but who's policing them?
It seems like no one.
The Pit is an AMS-run bar, which makes the entire situation
additionally disgraceful. Students are reputably poor, and yet the
bar rewards those who can recklessly spend. If the AMS has the
typical student's interest in mind, backdoor bribery needs some
serious attention. \\a
Fear and Loathing by the TV
Itwas a night of cut-throat electoral politics on campus. At Koerner's, the vice-presidential debate. At the Pit, the Canadian federal
debate. At the Gallery, also the American vice-president debate.
For their part, Pie R2, with their finger on the pulse of UBC, was
showing a boxing match.
Ladies and gentleman, we present to you the uniquely Canadian
electoral conundrum: we may be in the process of deciding who
will lead our country for the next four years, and yet the options
we have in front of us elicit barely a shrug. These days, American
politics take the spotlight. Sure, America is the world superpower.
Sure, Obama is charismatic and would be the best black president
since Morgan Freeman. Sure, Tina Fe—Sarah Palin is the most
volatile woman with her eyes on the Oval Office since Lewinsky.
And their economy is collapsing to boot. We get it. The States put
on a better show.
When Palin appeared on screen the crowd at the Gallery went
completely silent. The American candidates were heard crystal
clear over the stereo. Biden was an old white guy. Palin was a
hockey mom. McCain was a POW maverick. Obama will part the
waves and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. That we
heard loud and clear.
Sadly, what we couldn't hear loud and clear was the Canadian
debate. The sound system at the Pit, normally reserved for those
"quality" Wednesday night beats, left the Canadian candidates
sounding much like Jean Chretien...underwater. And when the
federal candidates came on the big screen, the crowd simply continued to chatter.
Aside from the audio problems, the Canadian debate at the
Pit was a lukewarm success. Liberal candidate Joyce Murray,
Conservative candidate Deborah Meredith and Green candidate
Dan Grice all were present at the event. The NDP candidate was
notably absent—with NDP students expressing frustration at their
truant candidate.
As for the crowd reactions? Well, as you'd expect, itwas a Lib-
eral-NDP crowd. But the undeniable, and unpleasant, fact to state
is that in a campaign dominated by 15-second sound bites—Layton
can make a convincing pitch. Dion, for reasons that are obvious to
everyone, can't. Unfair, but true.
But back to the States. It's a glorious train wreck watching Palin
make her debut on the world stage. Tina Fey's SNL skits have been
disseminated across the Internet like a certain Rick Astley tune,
eliciting guffaw after guffaw as people watch her explanation of
the maritime border between Alaska and Russia. It's a completely
understandable fascination with the small-town-lipsticked hockey
mom. Who is this woman? What does she think about the world?
And what if she becomes the most powerful person in the world?
Coupled with the economic meltdown, it's must see TV.
There were people out there we talked to who mentioned that
they would be watching the Canadian debates online. We wish we'd
bet a beer on every person that said that. Chances are, at least one
of us here would be crouched over a toilet by now. The Canadian
debate was dull, professional, lacking in sparks or fireworks (we'll
ignore Elizabeth May, because we expect most voters did as well).
But you know what? Given the mockery of the lipstick-wearing,
gun-toting, Jesus-loving VP candidate and national embarrassment to the south...we'll take boring, thank you very much.
