With the local atrac-\ntion deteriorating, people\nhave been gradually drifting to other points, which\nmake a better bM.\nThere is a tidy bit of revenue to be made out of the\nday in good times. While a\nprivate group took it in\ncharge, there was alii annual\nprotest. The pre-emptors decided to gi,ve someone else\na chance. The feeling was\nthat the young fellows, in\nathletic organizations should\nhave the day. In 1933 the\nTrack and F:',eld Club was\norganized with the idea of\nfostering this branch of athletics, and taking the celebration under its wing. It\nmade a fair success with a\nnew departure. Last year it\nmade no move to repeat. A\nsemi-private organization\ncame to the rescue, but for\nthe first time in years the\nsequence of big days was\nbroken.\nUp To The\nYoung Men\nThere are many citizens\nwho regret tfr's flagging of\ninterest. They feel, however,\nit is chiefly up to the young\nfellows. \"For eight years,\"\nsaid one fihie worker, \"I\nhave been making sport for\nthese young fellows. It is a wedge-shaped segment lying betwen two of the best\nknown of the Nickel Plate claims.\nThe ore body on the Iron Duke\nand Morning claims dips into the\nMascot at an angle of 23 degrees\nwest. Supplies\nhave been freighted in and\na call has ben issued for men\nas preparation are made to\ncommence driving a tunnel. It is expected that development work will now\nproceed rapidly.\nSupplies have been hauled\nin from Penticton as the\n'contractors establish their\ncamp. It is expected that\nabout 100 men will be employed during the summer.\nThe co'htract, as soon as\nit was let, was shared, it is\nreported. The former operators of the Nickel\nPlate were anxious to secure\nthe now famous fraction,\nbut could hot\ncome to an agreement with\nthe owner. When one drives to Hedley, he is apt to become cynical. There is one of the few.\nbright spots in Canada today (and thank goodness\nits upbuilding is not being\nfermented by any racketeering or boom propaganda).\nHedley wants to be some\nCawstolh have, because of\nthe contrast in accessibility,\nbeen virtually drawn to Penticton as their center instead\nof Princeton, the rightful\nclaimant. It\nlooks to Princeton for its\nconnections.\nThere are many of us in\nPrinceton, who have, on the\nstrength of the total assets\nof this community, made investments designed to serve\nthe whole community.  We\nare anxious to extend these\nservices to Hedley, how that\nit is in the market for them.\nThe one way is to make\nthem easily accessible.\nThat means good roads.\nFor years Princeton   has\nfought the bugbear of the\nworst roads in the country.\nNow they are  beginning\nto think it is a racket.\nIt does seem that every\ninducement is la3d to take\naway from Princeton the\npeople who should naturaliy\ncome here. From Merritt\nthere are good roads to the\noutside world; so from Hedley, But Princeton is enmeshed in a net of the worst\nroads in the province, and\nthe road that should have\nbeen' bujlt to make it the\ngateway to the interior lags\nbehind, a silly plaything of\nnodding politics.\nWhy, one must ask, is the\nroad from Hedley to Penticton a highway, and into\nPrinceton a cow trail? Why\nwas the road going away\nimproved to such an extent,\nand that coming to ignored,\nand allowed to become, as\nit certainly has, the worst\nin many years?\nFor years local folk have\nbeen indignant at the rank\ndiscrimination over the Hope\nPrinceton road. For years\nthey asked for a decent connection with ^Blakeburn, a\nbig source of revenue to government and merchants. Keremeos    and\nlaw sends them to Penticton.\nWhy?\nThen there is the matter\nof the G.N., the valley's own\nlateral railroad. Similkameen\ninterests rallied last fall to\nsave ilt in a meritorious battle. Now there is afoi obvious\nmove to talk them out of\ntheir victory.
