Fraser Way, Abbotsford, B.C. V2T 1W3
Randy White seeks speaker's job
B.C. Canadian Alliance MP Randy White has sent a
letter to all MPs that he should be given the job of
the speaker as he is better suited than the other seven
Liberal candidates.
There is no doubt that a speaker has to be neutral, an
arbitrator, a mediator and a friend to all other members of parliament, said White in his letter.
Over the years White has watched the speakers conduct themselves and feels confident that he can do the job as well if not
better than some.
White was his party's House Leader and was doing a fine job until Preston
Manning and he had a misunderstanding and he was turfed out by his leader
from his House Leader's job. He is from Abbotsford and was a school district administrator before winning the elections. This is his third term as
M.P.
There are some extra perks that go with the job such as a cook, driver, car
and a house staff not to mention an extra $50,000 thousand allowance over
and above the salary of an MP.
A
Jan 24th, 2001
Feb 6th, 2001
Punjabi Patrika
Page 3
PwMfwMritrUSi
TUNE-UP
CENTRE
'Repair Centre
rsa
{asm Authorized Dealer
♦ gtoT
♦^dltd'Hd
♦ fStitf^goT
♦ feockjJldtttl
♦£»ra store- fmtore
♦ oTfirf^ej gt^ft §5Wir ^w^
dctd?MA/&dd
fawm•#'j/afrv 3ar7it$9 &?£'J5w<> ed3cry§ sfStuf/
New Unit# 24 - 3275 McCallum Road Abbotsford, B.C. Yes, time sure waits for no one.
Our Chinese community also celebrates its New Year starting today and
theirs is a long four-day celebration, which is indeed grand and very
ceremonial. I had the good fortune to attend many a Chinese New Year
celebration whilst living in Malaysia (as Malaysia too is a melting pot
like Canada) as a kid growing up with my many Chinese friends and
school mates.
We would start by getting together one designated place and then in a
group cycle over to the houses of our many friends. At the house of our
friends we always found the dinner tables laden with food and sweets of
all types, Chinese cakes, coconut candy, roost pork, roost chicken, duck
and all other types of sumptuous food that one could think of. He felt that
for all the time his parents had spent on sending
him for higher education and having to work in
labour was not justifiable.
Parm enrolled in the Real Estate course and in a
very short time passed with flying colours and low and behold he was a
Real Estate Salesperson in the Fraser Valley. He recollects how difficult it
was in the beginning as he went around to acquaint himself with his new
found job and trying to convince house buyers that he may be new on the
job but he would put his best foot forward to ensure them when using his
services.
Parm says, "God has been on my side and I must thank all my clients,
friends and associates who have assisted me along for the last ten years."
This year he was the number One Indo Canadian Realtor in volume lo-
cally-he had over 3 million dollars worth of sales and also was in the top
10% of all Fraser Valley Realtors.
Within a span of 10 years he has taken the top spot for an Indo Canadian
Realtor 3 times in a row and that is something that he and his family can be
proud of. Parm is a very intelligent and down to earth type of a guy who
gets involved in community matters when approached to do so. Always
has a smile on his face for young or old and given the time, willing to help
in whichever way he could.
This newspaper has been fortunate to be associated with him and we are
confident that Parm will maintain his top positioh for years to come as he
continues to work hard and will surely reap the price for it. We have been
told that already as of January 20th, 2001 he has listings of over 15 million
dollars.
»l*k?H£da iQ HUTgT Wire #^ €t otfafoo!
Dr. Manjinder Saini Inc.
-Dentist-
c^^^THelMHeftfFc^cft^1^ eJ'tldl »T#>>fcp,ytF*rt,feM>Ht
QcJg 9tt3 eFl
New patients and emergency walk-ins welcome! It has recently
been shown to slow the metabolism of nicotine so that nicotine levels remain
higher longer, reducing the need for a smoke. Although it's still in the research
stages, it might result in new therapies to help smokers kick the habit.
And speaking of kicking the habit, now might be a good time to stop the
smoking habit forever. There is a lot of help out there. By the way, if you are a
woman going "cold turkey" you might try it during the first half of your
menstrual cycle. Side effects of quitting are similar to PMS symptoms and the
combination might be too much if you try during the second half.
If you smoke while pregnant, think of this. Nicotine narrows the blood vessels
in the placenta and this may effect the structure and function of the baby's
brain. This can result in a greater chance of more negative behavior in young
children, so the "terrible two's" might be even more terrible.
Heating or processing tomatoes increases their lycopene antioxident quality.
The same holds true with carrots. Cooked carrots have much higher levels of
rMienolic acids and beta-carotene antioxidants than their raw counterparts.
Our pharmacists keep records of drug allergies on your prescription file. Let
us know of any drug you are allergic to or have had a problem with in the past
and we will record on your file. It could save you some grief in the future.
We are inclined to take care of our body through exercise and eating well
(well, some people do!), however do we take care of our voice? To keep
vocally fit so your voice doesn't become prematurely hoarse and wobbly,
reduce whispering (which forces your vocal cords into an abnormal position).
Try not to clear your throat often because this is hard on the voice.
According to the Canadian Kidney Foundation, you are never too old to be
an organ donor. Many seniors have very healthy organs. The oldest Canadian
donor was 102 but many are well into their 70's and beyond. Have you
registered as an organ donor yet?
We recently saw a list of the ten reasons to quit smoking. We liked #10:
"You look stupid". The article mentioned how smoking deprives the brain of
oxygen so this may affect why people continue a habit that truly does kill.
Having said that, smoking is an extremely powerful addiction. Much support
is needed to stop.
One of the most common side effects of drugs is diarrhea. In fact, it accounts
for 7% of all drug side effects. Antibiotics cause diarrhea 25% of the time.
Laxatives, magnesium-containing antacids and arthritis drugs can also causes
diarrhea especially when taking too much. We'll warn you when diarrhea
might be a problem with your medication..
All drugs have side effects, but the drug user does not experience most of the
side effects listed. If it's important to your quality of life, we'll tell you about
it. Though the
stars and planets are our next door neighbours, the ties among human
beings have gone weak and go weaker day by day. The struggle for the
survival is spreading through the universe leaving the norms of life dazed
and stunned. But are we supposed to be viewing Darwin's theory so
sluggishly and dogmatically? Do the genius confine itself to the huge
accelerators or to the hyperplane of poetic fantasy? Man's natural
curiosity has been prompting him to un-wrap the laws governing nature
but the eventual need of humanity is still in its infancy.
Yes! The colour of skin still differentiates the skills; the preference still
goes to the powerful and inspite of everything, we still claim that:
WE ARE CIVILIZED
SE2 - RALLY A BOOMING SUCCESS
Well the pre preliminary hearings of the National Energy Board regarding j
notice of motions from Sumas Energy 2 have come to an end this)
weekend. NEB did indeed proceed and rule in accordance with their?
mandate to not only be fair but to appear to be fair. An extension to
February 19l was granted for the preliminary hearing to hear arguments
on SE2's motion to narrow the scope of evidence that would not allow any
impacts from the plant to be heard at the official NEB hearings on the
original application. This means that the original hearing will now take
place on April 23r, which meant that many of the dates were also
realigned,- giving opponents a little more time to gather their arguments
and evidence. It was also determined that should Intervenor l's wish to
call expert witness or evidence into their presentations they will need to
file this information prior to the April 23rd hearing. The request from SE2
to limit Intervenor l's to a four-minute presentation was also rejected by
the Board.
The rally was a booming success with 3000 - 500 people in attendance.
The organizers did an outstanding job. The people of this valley wanted to
make a statement and are committed to fighting this project all the way to
the end. We are certain that this event caught the attention of people across
Canada and the NorthWest. We were hoping to impress on CPR the
important role that they play in this application approval. Although we
would prefer to have CPR simply refuse access to their right of way to
SE2, we feel that CPR will certainly help at the preliminary hearing when
the issue of impacts to Canada from the plant will be discussed. Although
the applicant has had five years to prepare for this, we look forward to a
level playing field and are committed to saving our valley.
v | AVON ■
Avon Products for Sale 25%. He
wanted to provide his family with
all the essentials he was deprived of
while growing up as a child in Punjab.. For many many years he
worked hard to educate his children
while his wife raised them to respect
and help others as they grew older
and went on their separate routes in
life.
From the time Jake Sidhu could walk and speak he recollects how he
wanted to work hard like his father. At the age of 13 he was already
dreaming and thinking big. He remembers when all the kids were out
playing he would be working away in the family farm. Even as a child,
Jake was always business oriented, wanting to work and not play as other
children his age did. He had a goal to achieve and was going to make his
mark to earn it.
It was Jake's turn to make things happen as his father did for his family.
For some years Jake struggled in the work force. He worked in many
different fields ranging from farm work, pizza deliveries, janitorial,
management, supervisor, mill work etc.... With his earned money he
purchased a vehicle to make the commutes from the family home to
work. Jake has never asked for any financial help from his parents to
purchase necessities or further his education as they had already done so
much. He was going to do this all on his own, with only emotional
support from the family.
After graduating from W.J. Mouat Senior Secondary, he went directly to
college to continue his education. Computers was a field that Jake was
always intrigued by, thus he took computer and graphic courses. Whilst,
taking courses during the day, he worked for Landmark Trust during long
hours of the night into the break of dawn. Between school and work it
left very little time for a social life. Once his program was completed,
Jake wasted no time to follow through with his goals.
In 1997, Jake read an ad in the paper for a print shop franchise. Immediately after reading the ad, Jake knew that this was the opportunity he had"
been seeking to change his dream to reality. As time went by, he took all
the required training that was provided and payed for all of the other
courses that were needed. After training and making the purchase for the
franchise,"One Hour Printing" was set to go. During the day, Jake would
run the shop, in the evenings he would work at the mill, and on the
weekends he continued to further his education. For several months the
clientele was slowly building but the outcomes of projects were great. In
time, Jake quit his job to put 100% of his time and efforts towards One
Hour Printing.
Gradually, Jake decided to break from the franchise and open his very
own print shop. With all the hard earned money he had saved, he bought
more, better equipment, supplies, and a suitable location. In 1998, Jake
opened the doors to his dream, Bourquin Printers. The print shop was
located on South Fraser Way in Bourquin Plaza on the second floor. As
word got out, loyal customers were returning for the exceptional service
they had received from Jake before. With months of advertising, word of
mouth and flyer distribution, everything was starting to fall in place.
Bourquin Printers was on its way to accommodate the people of the
Fraser Valley. Clientele all the way from Texas were using the services
provided by Bourquin Printers. With fair prices and excellent service
Jake was sure the goals he set were being accomplished one by one. This
was not enough, with all the work that was coming in, he needed more
employees and more equipment to fulfill customer demands. Whilst,
running the shop during the day, Jake took up security during the night.
Hard work was the only way Jake knew life. He had a dream and was
going to go to any length to make it all come true.
In 1999, a space on the main floor became available for lease. With this
Jake jumped at the opportunity to lease the space. The exposure would
be great for his business, especially with the space facing South Fraser
Way. His new location needed a lot of renovating. During the month of
November he spent nights and weekends fixing up the space for his shop.
Jake was determined to open his new office in December. When the
renovations were complete, everything was moved downstairs and
Bourquin Printers was ready to operate from its new home. The move
downstairs brought in many more customers, including walk in traffic
and several large accounts. Things were starting to pick up and clientele
base was in full growth.
Right from the start Jake has worked with many non-profit organizations
with their printing needs. These organizations include Abbotsford's
Community Service's Family Centre division, C.C.C., The Sikh Temples,
along with several others. Bourquin Printers has provided their services
with efficient and fast service. However, the one thing a lot of the customers were asking for were signage and decaling. Jake wanted to expand and the thought of adding an edition to the shop was a great way to
start. In January of 2000 Jake opened up a sign shop affiliated with
Bourquin Printers. Of course, equipment was another thing, which meant
more spending. Gathering all the info and resources Jake purchased what
he needed to get the show on the road. Thus today it is known as
Bourquin Printers and Signs. This new addition to the shop took off
immediately. With sales booming the two shops were doing exceptionally well. This has been Jake's third successful year running a print shop
and it has been his second successful year operating Bourquin Printers.
His goal now is to open other locations around the Lower Mainland to
help serve the people, as he has been serving the community of the
Fraser Valley.
As he looks back at his life so far, he smiles and says," all the hard work
was worth.it. To make money you need to spend money. I never gave up
when obstacles came my way, I just stepped around them to get where I
am today, a successful individual. I want to thank my family, friends,
employees, and most of all my loyal customers for making this happen."
(From time to time we will be doing articles on local entrepreneurs in
Abbotsford.)
-< Jan 24th, 2001
Feb 6th, 2001
Punjabi Patrika
\\ms$^m^$wM^h^M
Page 21
m
fU£$ fU?)!1 »T<TUHiU3' o('Qh« U TFUHS WdHU'tfl HHlft ?v?t >*ifa-f?)GiH
fe^ wit?) K. Buttar
I started out with a polite but firm "Auntiji, tussi meri seat...",
but she cut me off. I tried to explain the rationality behind a
boarding pass, but she blatantly ignored me. It was as though
she was giving me the silent treatment. She stared straight at
the seat ahead of her. "Auntiji...". No response. "Earth to
bibi...hello??" Again no response. I gave in and assured that I
would trade seats with her, but she pretended she had lost her
boarding pass. Here I was, offering to give her my seat, but
she refused to co-operate!
I found myself squeezing through the crowded aisle once
again, this time in search of a stewardess. After five minutes
of getting elbowed in the face, kicked in the shins and
smacked with bags, I was back with a stewardess.
Unfortunately, round two was even harder. The bibi had
backup. She had gotten a couple of her bibi friends to ream
me out with harsh words like "guddi chup karke beja" and
"koi hor seat haini?!"
The stewardess flashedme a phony smile and asked if
everything had been resolved. I replied, "well, DUH! Why do
you think I called you?? This woman is hogging my seat,
where the hell am I supposed to sit?? This airline is terrible, I
DEMAND to have a seat in first class!" Ok, I didn't say that,
but I really wanted to. ^^ffaSBl WA
I was still standing there, when the pilot mumbled something
over the intercom. I couldn't hear what he had said. I figured
he was telling everyone to shut up and sit down since the
plane was MOVING! Among the loud chatter I could make
out words such as, "Jaswant, mera purse kithe aah?!?, and
"BEBE, goli khaala!!" The rest of the passengers were still
standing around arguing over which seats they would be best
suited for, completely unaware that the plane was turning
onto the runway!
I looked around for my sister, hoping that she would help me
find a seat, but I remembered that her seat was near the front
of the plane and I didn't have the time - or the patience - to
go looking for her. The plane was moving, and I had to act
fast. So I just sat down - far away from bibi of course. I can't
remember where exactly, but it was a window seat and it was
somewhat quieter than the area behind me. I was still
carrying my backpack with me because I didn't know if I
would be able to keep the seat or now. But since the two
seats next to me were empty, I had a good feeling about it.
to be continued...
P«|«ht JStlrlkj
Jan 24th, 2001
Feb 6th, 2001
Punjabi Patrika
Page 25
pwim wiimif ran m mmu
10'x 12'Patio Cover
|$799.001 tax
# (10'X 12'only) If
Skylights & l-Beam Extra
Manufactures of
High Grade:
• Insulated Metal Tile Roofing
•Patio Covers
SB
• Do-it-Yourself Kits for the
home handyman
• lifetime Product Warranty j
Richmond Aluirfinifm Products!MFG.
Plfp5* #2155-1851 Savage Rd. Although
there is the danger of becoming lost when maneuvering through the
hanging moss and narrow water channels, somehow I know when danger
is near or the direction wrong. I manage to keep my family safe, warm
and fed. Good instincts, yes I have good instincts!
Loneliness is a way of life in the swamp. Often we did not see
people for months on end. Our good luck did not go unnoticed. Gossip
and speculation escalate and soon fear develops among the few
neighbors we have. They come to believe that I cast my bad luck onto
them, making myself a danger!
Suddenly while boating through the swamp I find myself above my
body observing the carefully set trap that sends a pole chopping at my
neck, breaking it and ending my life. Several hours later one of my
neighbors carefully dismantled the trap so no one suspects murder.
Case 28, in her thirties, witnessed the changes in her school
triends who tried past-life recall. Several complaints bothered her as she
studied in the health care field. She found it extremely hard to balance full
time studies, two children and a husband. Being a perfectionist, Case 28
drove herself to exhaustion spending many hours in the middle of the
night on schoolwork while her family slept. It took every ounce of trust and
energy to continue pursuing her career. Case 28 stuffed all of her feelings
in an attempt to cope. Finally she failed one course and the administration
told her to take a semester off to get her life into perspective. Now Case
28 was back and wanted assurance that she could indeed pass the exam
and keep her life together, but her anxiety increased and panic set in. She
was tired, anxious and wanted some joy in tier life. Prior to the above
consultation Case 28 had a terrific sore throat that lasted over a week.
Case 28's witnessed her past-life gifts of communicating with
guidance on safety, aiding her family's health through use of the golden
(sun) light, plus the ability to hear her guides speak. These gifts were
severed by her unexpected murder.
Case 28's future changes with the return of these gifts that assure
her professional success and accuracy. To receive them she was to
forgive her murderer - present life father. Learning of her father's past-life
link explained why she never felt safe with him. First she became willing
then joy flowed throughout her body. Now Case 28 is a successful health
care professional whose relationship with her father is stronger - the
future possibility of one past-life consultation.
Aashiq
Cast Bobby Deol, Karisma Kapoor,
Anupam Kher, Rahul Dev
Director Indra Kumar
Producer Anil Sharma
Music Sanjeev Darshan
After the sentimental Dil, the dramatic ^^^_—___—_^^^__^_
Beta, the fun-laden Raja, the romantic comedy Ishq and the emotional Mann,
which unfortunately couldn't work wonders at the box office, Indra Kumar is
back with a mushy love story couched in his characteristic narrative flourishes.
In other words, Aashiq is a zingy entertainer for those who understand love.
Though the director has nothing new to serve to the audience, the film hinges on
the hoary rich girl-poor boy formula. But with Indra Kumar, who has a special
yen for high drama and robust romance, at the helm of affairs, this comes as no
surprise. He has proved his mettle time and again as a director. With his thorough understanding of the pulse of the audience, his films play up various
emotions and rarely fail to entertain. His latest offering, Aashiq, is a pot-pourri
of all that adds up to watchability and at the same time makes one pause to
think. Aashiq explores varying elements of love and more.
Chander (Bobby Deol) is a fun-loving, carefree young man who believes in
standing up for others. This streak earns him enemies, but also brings him in
front of the besotted eyes of the wealthy Pooja (Karisma Kapoor). What
follows is a unique, fun-filled romance and before long Pooja and Chander are
irrevocably in love. For the umpteenth time in Bollywood finis, the true test of
love beckons in the form of barriers galore—family disapproval, misunderstanding and more.. .fatalistically.
Pooja gets abducted by a heinous flesh-trader (Rahul Dev). Chander is framed
as the abductor. An outlaw on the run, while evading handcuffs, it is his challenging, near-impossible mission to rescue his belovedJErom the lecherous world.
Willing to take any risk, Chander puts his own life at stake and an absorbing,
thrill-packed, emotionally charged experience ensures.
For Bobby Deol, Aashiq could be an opportunity to demonstrate his range as an
actor, cast as he is in an action-oriented romantic role. The character has two
shades: the playfulness of a boy and the maturity of a man. Watch out for
Karisma Kapoor who due to her versatility, has attained the status of a veteran
of sorts at a very young age. Advance reports suggest that she could prove to
be a treat for sore eyes.
After his none-too-impressive performance as a psychopathic villain in Champion, model-turned-actor Rahul Dev gets another chance to redeem himself.
Failure makes Ajay Devgan wiser!
The debacle of Raju Chacha has had devastating effect on the distributors,
exhibitors, and financiers—Very few sensible actor-producers though learn
from their follies. And even when they do, it's rather too late!
Well, Ajay Devgan is definitely one actor who has made mistakes and learnt
from them. Both Hindustan Ki Kasam and Dil Kya Kare have been average
successes but still couldn't do what his last home production Raju Chacha has
done — left him wiser too! Ajay has signed music director turned film director,
Vishal (Bhardwaj) for his next film titled 2?a//starring Sushmita Sen and Manoj
Bajpai.
As if one film wasn't enough, he has announced yet another film with Sanjay
Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan in the leads to be directed by Milan Lutheria. Ajay
has not only resisted from casting himself in the films, wife Kajol too has no role
to play — in the film or otherwise — though the roles are 'fantastic'.
He is also devoting all his energies to his portal to make it a success in this age
of "fierce competition". "I know we'll survive, so what if other portals are not
doing too well", he assured his fans at a press conference.
With Kajol too taking active interest in their companywe are sure they'll make a
very enterprising couple, notwithstanding the fate of their films!
Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi
Cast Kajol, Sunil Shetty, Rishi Kapoor, Rati Agnihotri
Director Rahul Rawail
What could be three reasons for watching this film? The first two are easy:
Kajol and Kajol (she has a double role,
so there). And the third reason — uh
well, there's no third reason. Suffices to
say that Kajol to-the-power-of-two is
quite a chemistry in itself. Of course, no
one is mincing words in acknowledging
the fact that this is Bollywood's nth
(haven't we lost the count, frankly!) take-off on the 1961 Hollywood classic,
The Parent Trap. Not in the least director Rahul Rawail, who has made that
much clear right at the outset.
So you have the bubbly Sweety (Kajol), for whom life is an absolute scream.
She lives with her billionaire alcoholic father (Rishi Kapoor) and there's a
scheming aunt (Meeta Vashisht) who wants all the pot of gold of course.
Frustrated with her aunt's tirades, Sweety flees to London, and who should she
meet there but her shy lookalike, Tina (Kajol, again), who lives with her mother
(Rati Agnihotri, in a tepid comeback).
Of course they are twin sisters, each sibling living with one estranged parent.
The twins will unite the parents and the evil aunt will be taken care of. All's
well that ends well as the credits roll.
Not much of an effort here on the director's part to give the familiar theme any
new dimension. If anything, the only change that Rawail brings about to the old
recipe is casting a fullblooded heroine as the protagonist (recollect, all long-lost
identical twin tales, be it Bollywood or Hollywood, had child artists in the central
roles).
A Bollywood film minus an original script, imaginative treatment or well-defined
characters is nothing new. Rawail hasn't strayed from masaladom norm inasmuch. Where KKKM clicks is in the filmmaker's perfect usage of his
trumpcard. Rawail knows this adage, and exploits it to the utmost when it
comes to it: Planet Bollywood wouldn't be the same without .Kajol.
m- -'
rairiiWi
I
r
I ay,
m
I ';'■''
P
I
I
ii
I
I
1
1
m?
Page 34
Punjabi Patrika
Jan 24th, 2001
Feb 6th, 2001
CLASSIFIEDS
FREE MANURE
20% manure and 80% sawdust.
Good for blueberries and vegetable fields.
