It can be due to a deficiency of the B Complex
vitamins particularly Vitamin B2, riboflavin). Sometimes just taking a
B Complex supplement for a month or so will clear up the condition.
The first book written about herbal medicine was "De Materia
Medica" by Dioscorides in ancient Greece. In 1652, Culpepper's
"Complete Herbal and the English Physician" was first published
and came to North America with the Pilgrims and was the medical
treatment bible for over 200 years.
Heat exhaustion occurs when your body can't sweat enough to cool
you off. It happens sometimes when you work or exercise in hot
weather. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, dizziness or
nausea. The skin becomes cool and clammy. This can sometime
lead to heat stroke when your body stops sweating altogether and
your body temperature continues to rise. This requires emergency
treatment.
To avoid these overheating problems, avoid strenuous outdoor
physical activity on hot days. It's amazing that he said this over
350 years ago. He was born in Weil der stadt, Germany, on December 27, 1571.
At the age of four years, Kepler suffered an attack of small pox. One ofhis hands
was deformed and his eyesight permanently impaired. His education was interrupted when his father lost all his money. Kepler had to become an errand boy and
scrub floors.
At the age of 13, Kepler was sent to a monastery school in Adelberg, where
his brilliance won him scholarship at the University of Tubingen. He joined a
course in astronomy. When he read the revolutionary theory of great astronomer
Nicolaus, stating that the earth revolves around the sun, his interest in astronomy
become even more intense. At the age of 23, Kepler became a professor of mathematics in Austria. He was a popular teacher and greatly inspired his students. He
married a young widow, who had both beauty and money, 4W&
Kepler advanced reasons to prove how the moon caused the tides. He wrote
a book titled Mysterious Cosmos. This book also led to his friendship with the
Danish genius and well-known astronomer, Tycho Brahe, at Prague. He tried to
calculate the motions of the planets, presuming that their orbits were in a circle. He
did not succeed, and consulted, Tycho Brahe. Kepler became his assistant, but
Tycho did not believe in the Copernican system.
Tycho was also a great astronomer. For 20 years, he made observations with
his giant quadrant (the telescope was invented in 1609). He made numerous accurate observations. Tycho lent Kepler his incomplete planetary tables, which enabled the latter to work out his three great laws of planetary motion. These laws
nullified the old Ptolemaic theory of the earth as the centre of the universe. It
confirmed Copernicus's belief and gave way and direction to the era of modern
astronomy. This genius had to toil for long, unending hours as even the slightest of
errors could waste a week's hard work. He lived with meager resources and at
times no food was cooked in the house, due to the lack of money for buying wood.
When Tyco died, Kepler succeeded his position at Rudolph's court, but the Emperor did not pay him the salary that he had promised. He was more interested in
Kepler's skill as an astrologer than as an astronomer. Kepler wrote the book New
Astronomy, but it attracted little attention and the genius continued to live in poverty.
In 1612, Kepler lost his second sonand his wife. The Emperor, who was his
patron, died too. Now Kepler was compelled to take up a teaching-job in Linz.
His new job didnot give him enough money, but he got the time for regular observation with a borrowed telescope. Kepler believed that there might be life on the
planets, and when he observed them through the telescope, he made a statement
about building a ship to sail into space.
Kepler remarried in Linz. Unfortunately, his mother was charged with practising witchcraft and jailed in a village Wurttemberg. Kepler had to put in months
of work to have her acquitted. Around this time he wrote his third great book, The
Harmony of the World. The church suppressed his writings and in 1926, Linz was
besieged. The religious authorities put Kepler under a rigid watch as they suspected him to be heretic. They even sealed his library. One icy cold, rainy night,
Kepler fled'from Linz. At Ulm on the Danube, Kepler completed the calculations
for Tycho's 777 stars and added 228 observations ofhis own. The Rudolphine
Tables were finally printed, giving all credit to Tycho. Recognising this work,
Emperor Ferdinand 2nd granted Kepler a small pension and a home in Sagan,
Silesia. On November 15, 1630, Kepler died of fever. As a scientist, Johannes
Kepler lived through hardships but with his strong will he smoothened his way to
success. War and many personal crises plagued his life, yet this giant of science,
set a path for man to step on to and walk towards stars.
tftT^tffeoP
Page 4
PUNJABI PATRIKA
1&81 Tracey Street
Abbotsford, B.C. • V2T 6G4
Telepboxe: 852-2288
Editorial
The roar of the jets was back in Abbotsford over the weekend and
Abbotsford was again the "Hub" of the weekend festivities. It is believed
that an approximate crowd of over 150,000 people were in our city
lapping it up at the airport. Weather was once again the main factor. We
could have done with some sunshine although the haze and clouds kept it
mild.
There were jets flying upside down, fire simulating an air attack on the
airport, CF-18 Hornet fighter plane, the CF-18s, the F-104 Starfighter
jets, and many many more planes entertaining the huge crowds for the 3
days the air show was on. Sure, there were road blocks all over the area
and no doubt inconveniencing residences who live around the
surrounding area of the airport but there is no doubt that it brought more
pleasure watching the large crowds driving around helping the economy
of our city grow.
We talked with a berry farmer and there is a feeling of despair amongst
the farming community once again. Earlier in the season it was thought
that this was going to be the year for the berry farmers to recoup some
money as the crops were looking good and the prices even better. Mother
Nature has again let them down. How can you make money when prices
are good, but you don't have a half-decent crop?
The next blow to the farmers is the one that the NDP government of BC
is going to land with the increase of the minimum wage. True, it is
becoming harder and harder to put food on your table on minimum wages
but the farming community is the one hit hardest as they are not able to
get comparative prices for their crops.
We have also received news that the traditionalists are finally able to
open the doors of the temple premises at Cyril Street. Permission has
- been granted to have prayer assemblies on both Saturdays and Sundays,
as the prayer hall is ready for the congregation. It is time that the building
be opened for the purpose it has been acquired. Punjabi Patrika wishes
to congratulate the committee with their efforts.
WORLD'S ONE APPLIANCES
& ELECTRICAL REPAIRS
Sales & Service
Fridges * Stoves * Washers
Dryers » Furnaces | Hot Water
Tanks » Hot Water Heat
Walk In Coolers
U*fSU*^UUH
u*uwuu
tor *s*u^*uuufu
Quality Repair & Installation By Certified Technician
Call Paul
TEL: 504-0941 PGR: 607-9331
IfltF^tftfa^Jr
I I I i / I
Pdnjabi Patrira - Ane.l ll|AnG.24, '99
Trave/Pius
Celebrating our 25th year
^fltidi § dMytrcr $&& 75^ SlHHH^r
z!tew§<ntertcre3£i
forcer at ersfffe &g
SPECIALS
INDIA SPECIALfrom $1440 RT
London $549
Calgary/Edmonton $119
Winnipeg $259
Call for last minute Specials
The above prices are all for return fughts
Co/iiactDaljitfor more Special Fares
;.: Oil:(604)153-414111
Fax:(604)850-1546
33693 South Fraser Way, P.O. SCOTT
adm@macadamslaw.com jmd@macadamslaw.com bcs@macadamslaw.com
The courage to take risks
By Tarn Bahl
A mountaineer who opts for a high altitude expedition risks frostbite,
sickness and infirmity. An army officer guarding treacherous territory
for long stretches of time risks his health, happiness and life. A student
who takes his architecture exam risks failure, loss of faith and
confidence. A girl who experiments with a new hairstyle risks looking
lousy. An investor who puts his life savings in a new project risks
making a bad investment. A suitor who proposes to the woman of his
dreams risks being rejected.
If there is risk involved in everything that we contemplate doing, then
why do we take risks at all? Why are we not like the farmer who neither
sows wheat, afraid that it would rain and nor does he plant corn, scared
that the insects would devour it. He chooses to plant nothing, since he
believes in playing safe. Is it because we know that risk-taking is the
essence of innovation and that we don't venture we don't gain? The one
ingredient, which is prerequisite in the mental and physical make-up of
any courageous person, is the ability to take the plunge, to jump headlong
into what his gut instinct tells him is correct. By overcoming fears of
mind, body and heart he finds himself ready to take risks, to stretch,
achieve and continually better himself.
Winners do take more risks than losers do. This; is why they appear
lucky, scoring more wins than most of us. What the skeptics fail to see is
that they also lose but since they risk so much, so often, it squares up and
in the end winners get applauded for victories not failures. We remember
Edison not for the thousands of bulbs that failed to light but for the one,
which worked. So each one of us has a choice. We're talking physics. We're talking yoga.
We're talking about electric fields, vibrations. We're talking about
'prana'.
'Prana' is that essential life force that makes you and I and the whole
world tick. 'Prana' is not air, nor breath nor oxygen, but that mysterious
^rfe force that is present in and sustains all beings and everything that
exists. It is the source of all life. It is the life force with which you were
conceived; it was the energy that nurtured you in your mother's womb; it
is the underlying energy behind every thought and action of yours. It is
both macrocosmic and microcosmic;
TWO ASPECTS OF EXISTENCE |#
The science of yoga is based cm the manipulation, purification and awakening of' prana' to achieve altered states of consciousness, expand the
mind beyond Hs given boundaries and experience life in totality. The
yogis of 5,000 years ago discovered 'prana' and the secrets of awakening
its fiill potential.
Today, science has verified their claims. The findingsrof Kirlean photography (photography of 'pranic' emanations or 'aura') and other experiments are the beginnings of research being conducted to explain and
understand 'prana' in modern day scientific terms. A yogi who has mastered the art of controlling 'prana' can manage for hours without oxygen,
but no one can survive for a second without 'prana'.
Yoga says that all of existence is made up of two forms of energy —
'prana shakti' (physical energy) and 'chitta shakti' (consciousness or
mental energy). 'Prana shakti' and 'chitta shakti' are viewed as the positive and negative poles of the one ultimate source of energy responsible
for all of creation.
Likewise, the human body, too, is made up of an interplay of these two
forms of energy— 'chitta shakti ('ida')' and 'prana shakti ('pingala')'. In
tantra, these twin forces are known as Shiva and Shakti. When these two
forms of energy are balanced and flow smoothly, with no blocks, life
goes on smoothly.
h£o>v-"--:
STARTING PRANAYAMA
Here are some simple practices that you can try anytime.
' [fifg^^a-jr-J:.jMJB-aniyq
*-/*■_-*-;4'-*\\Ct :
^£ont'dPagel4
txasSB
iis^^li
955S9HHnmi^HinmmnmH|
,^f"Ti 7~rrrT> > t TT. v).i "7 >V"i t TT >
iiii^liffl^MI^^B5m.^St^
Bs
t!^n^M^M'MI&MMd
PaNJ«ii Patrika - Ans.l I - Adg.24, '99|
NIVERSAL
PACKERS INC.
TH W& ^t 3^ feH H^ ^t yrtkdHtt ifoHE
^ftw ?> ^iflw cfto s1" ^te1?) 6^ fen713* for
^MutftHM $1.05£te
timfz 50% u^ u^3 w
WEft 50% H3^g £ »wfo fit¥
HiraoTcft
823-6947
_| Announcement I
Just as in previous years, we wish to inform all growers that the prices for berries harvested this season
are as follows:
Process Blueberry $1.05 per Ib
Fresh Blueberry $1.15 per Ib
Payments of 50% will be made every week and the
balance of 50% will be paid out at the end of September. Sit in a comfortable
meditative 'asana' such as 'sukhasana' or 'padmasana' or lie down in
'shavasana'. The head, neck and spine must be straight, the eyes closed.
Try to maintain perfect stillness during the practice. Only breathe through
the nostrils. All respiration must be comfortable and relaxed.
Begin by relaxing the body by moving your awareness through one complete body rotation. Relax the head, neck and shoulders. Relax both the
arms. Relax the chest and abdomen, the back, the buttocks. Relax both the
legs. Relax the whole body, altogether.
Breath awareness: Watch the natural breath flowing in and out of the
nostrils. Concentrate on the tip of the nose. Feel the breath flowing evenly
and smoothly. Count the number of breaths from 27 to 0; or if you have
time, from 54 back to 0. Follow the movement of your breath with awareness. During the practice, try not to lose count of the breath.
Abdominal breathing: This is the most efficient way to breathe. It can be
practised by enhancing the action of the diaphragm and minimising the
action of the rib cage. Observe the natural breath for some time. Place the
right hand on the abdomen just above the navel and the left hand over the
centre of the chest. Observe the right hand rise with each inhalation and
sink with each exhalation. There should be no tension. The breath should
be smooth, deep and slow. The left hand should not move. Try not to
expand the chest or move the shoulders.
Full yogic breathing: Inhale slowly, deeply and soundlessly, allowing the
abdomen to expand fully. Feel the air reach the bottom of the lungs. Once
the abdomen is fully expanded, expand the chest till the ribs are fully
expanded. Feel the air filling the upper lobes of the lungs around the base
of the neck. Some tension will be felt in the neck muscles.
The rest of the body should be relaxed. This is one full inhalation. The
movement should be smooth, like the swell of the sea. The exhalation
should be equally slow, rhythmic, smooth and complete. First, relax the
lower neck and upper chest. Gradually, allow the chest and then the
abdomen to contract downward and inward. Try to empty out the lungs as
completely as possible. Hold the breath for a few seconds at the end of
the exhalation. This is one complete round. Practise five to 10 rounds.
Slowly increase to 10 minutes daily.
PATHWAYS OF PRANA
The human body contains a subtle body made of a labyrinth of energy
pathways ('nadis'). 'Prana' flows along these 'nadis' or psychic passages.
In China they are known as meridians. There are 72,000 'nadis' in our
body. However, three are of prime importance: 'Sushumnanadi' (the
central pathway which channels spiritual energy), 'ida nadi' (which channels mental energy) and 'Pingalanadi' (which channels physical energy).
' Ida nadi', the left channel, is linked with the left nostril, the
parasympathetic nervous system and the right hemisphere of the brain.
'Pingala nadi', the right channel, is linked with the right nostril, the sympathetic nervous system, and the left hemisphere of the brain.
The practices of yoga are aimed at clearing and creating a perfect balance
between the left and right channel, 'ida' and 'pingala', respectively. Once
both sides are clear and fully awakened, when there is perfect unity
between the mental and physical energies, 'prana' can freely travel up the
'sushumna nadi' along the spinal cord. That is the awakening of the
dormant 'kundalini' energy at the base of the spine.
afti>ritr'ir*fri
PnNdABi Patrika - Ane.l 1 - Ane.24, '99
»(^W5U'^fUTfe>HToWdd5tH3'sH*l ^oTJ^^Hf fl3T§Ufrl>>tTcl§?>3$5i'H£ll
FIRST GOD CREATED LIGHT AND THENBYfflS OMNIPOTENCE MADEALL THEMORTALS.
FROM THE ONE LIGHT HAS WELLED UP THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. Those of us
who are not completely courageous hold ourselves back, build walls
around our personas, create dual and even multiple levels to our
personalities, scared that we would be hurt, rejected, ridiculed, and taken
advantage of. Our fear, insecurity, low self-esteem and lack of
confidence blinds us to the immense possibilities of good and happy
things that could happen to us, if only we take those small and not-so-
small risks.
When we don't laugh uproariously at a funny joke it is because we risk
appearing silly. When we hold back our tears, bottling up our resentment
it is because we risk appearing foolishly sentimental. When we wear a
mask camouflaging our feelings it is because we risk exposing our real
selves. When we refuse to admit our mistake and apologise, we risk
appearing small. We go through life without living, feeling and
experiencing real happiness. We don't even realise our full potential. We
forget that risks are meant to be taken. The greatest hazard in life is to
risk nothing.
As children, we start life with a healthy attitude towards risk. We
combine daring escapades with innovation, experimentation and a devil-
may-care attitude. But as the years roll by we become cautious and
guarded. "Playing safe" becomes the key word. Popular American
churchman Rebert Schuller says that we become preoccupied with
"taking care". He feels that people, who take care, get nowhere.
He insists on everyone taking a chance, taking charge, taking control.
According to him, taking a chance itself is a reckless risk. When you
take charge you learn to manage risks and when you take control you
surmount problems.
The trick then lies in taking calculated risks and in knowing the
difference between intelligent risk-taking and the entire family of
gambling, impulse, blind luck and bravado. Constructive risk-taking is
always based on fact and preparation. It is guided by reason. Courage is
not at all about jumping headlong into a ball of fire like the typical
cowboy Western who dramatically throws caution to the winds.
Impulsive daredevilry, killer instinct and ruthless ambition must be
combined with the saner elements of foresight, planning, timing, wisdom
and skill.
This potent combination is what will strengthen the resolve, conviction,
and efforts and, finally, the end result of whatever the courageous person
embarks upon. When we embrace risks requiring immediate intervention
like jumping out of a first-storey window in case of a fire, attacking a
mugger on the street in self defence, plunging into the river to save a
drowning child, we rely on our physical courage.
But when we get into a crazy joint venture, opt for a job which has
nothing to do with our qualification or migrate to another country to try
our luck, we take into account our intelligence and risk management
abilities. All courageous people are fearless risk-takers.
They also minimise risks. Sure they enjoy the rush of adrenaline,
anticipation of reward, chance to "play" and be part of the action but they
don't shoot blindly in the dark. They weigh the pros and cons and
prepare themselves for their decisions. There are times when their native
wisdom tells them to be in the passive wait-and-watch mode rather than
in the aggressive attack mode. This in no way undermines their fiery
courageous spirit. One day the parents Shankar and Sudha leave him to
guard the infant. A serpent enters and inches towards the cradle. A fight-
unto-death ensues between the mongoose and the serpent. On Sudha's
return, the excited moAgoose hurries to greet her at the door- step.
Seeing his bloodstained body, she presumes he has killed Ganesh and in a
fit of rage chops his body into two. While both of them are brave, it is
the mongoose that is courageous, though he does not live to tell his tale.
Sudha, on the other hand, converts her brave and courageous streak into
impulsive foolhardiness.
Responsible risk-taking, therefore, has to be based on knowledge,
training and careful study. This alone can give a person the courage to
act appropriately in the event of calamitous and fearful situations.
We don't have to wait for an emergency or momentous occasion to try
our hand at risk-taking. We can incorporate it by standing up for what
we believe in, by making firm decisions, not procrastinating and daring to
do what we really wish to. We may make mistakes and errors of
judgement along the way but the confidence and insights that we gain
would add to our reservoirs of courage. Flipping a roomali roti in a
frying pan seems deceptively easy. Rock the pan, create a momentum,
allow it to slide up and down and with one throw in the air, turn it around
to finally land it safely cooked into the pan. Now let us examine the
psychology of the roti-maker. If he is too timid and concerned with
whether the roti will fly too high and miss the pan, the result is that it will
go up in the air a few inches but won't have the height to turn. When it
does, there will be a mess inside the pan. On the other hand, when he is
too concerned not to allow the roti to turn over, he will end up using too
much force making it land on the stove, outside the pan. When he finally
learns to flip it, he explores his inner realm and is in touch with the state
of mind that gives him perfect strength, control and detached courage.
This helps him cultivate his killer instinct, which includes intelligent risk-
taking. This he uses not just in bullfight arenas and tough boardroom
meeting but also in the choices and decisions he makes the manner he
chooses to execute them and in leading the life he wishes to.
The Air Show
Ronnie Sidhu
"■■ '■ '■ * * -i: m; ii' ■ tii* it rir f
IT 'MM "• V ij • > ■
^^^l^4^yi^W^3SlM^^MW^K
m
':4m>4
m
fetft tff^cF
*t»iii*ma*m«***ma*Mm*
PQNdftBI Patrika - Aoe.1 I - Adg.24, '99
Cong vows to focus on Kargil
NEW DELHI: The Congress has made it clear that its campaign to regain
power will revolve round what it sees as the Vajpayee government's "complete failure" in areas like national security and economy and vowed to keep
the focus on the Kargil issue.
Jawan killed in rocket attack on Army camp
SRINAGAR: Militants fired a barrage of rockets on an military camp, killing
one jawan and wounding six in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir in the
third attack in two days on the Army which shot dead two militants in a
massive combing operations in the forests.
Vajpayee, Joshi, Advani attend RSS function
NEW DELHI: Away from the usual glare of publicity, Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee along with some ofhis senior Cabinet colleagues and top
BJP functionaries, had an informal session with the RSS top brass here on
Sunday.
Pak wants talks during UN session
NEW DELHI: Pakistan on Sunday mooted a proposal for a meeting with
Indian leaders during the UN general assembly session in New York next
month saying the stalled dialogue process should not be held hostage by the
election campaign in India.
No post-poll alliance with BJP: Pawar
PUNE: Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar ruled out any post-
poll alliance with the BJP or the Congress, saying his party would not touch
either "with a bargepole".
'Happy pills' leave youngsters in a sad state
NEW DELHI: These are often called the "happy pills" and it has become a
fad with youngsters in metropolitan cities to consume these to get over their
day-to-day blues. When
! she'd have got to know that one of her
1 favourite cricketers, Anil Rumble, got
married. Not that she knows him from
Adam. But Tabu's like that. Posses-
j sive about people she knows...and
likes. And if I ask her about it she'll
demur, "Chalo, aurek eligible bachelor chalagaya."
She'll say this with a/auxr-demure
smile. Tabu has a vast repertoire of smiles. One to accentuate every frame of
mind. Like recently, when she returned from her star shows, she beamed
beatifically. And said," I had a blast for 40 days. I'd party till 4:00 am in the
morning every day and be up by 10:00 to get ready for the shows. Everyone
thought I was on pep-up pills. Ha, ha, ha"
The Actress
Unlike other showbiz denizens, I can never accuse Tabu ofbeing self-centred.
She says, "I'd love to do all the best films being made in the country, but I
know it's not possible. Also, I've had it up to here with directors faking it.
They'll say they're dying to work with me. But when the announcements
come, some other heroine gets the role. But it's okay with me. I know I can
deliver the goods. Let them sign on all the exotic specimens going around.
Later, ghumphir ke merepaas hi aayenge."
As always the big conspiratorial smile, the hand on the arm to emphasise a
point. She utters, "There's nothing wrong in just looking good in film after film,
concentrating on your hair gel and coloured lenses. People have made careers
out of just looking good. But I want to find the truth in my acting. I want to
make my career out of purely acting. I'd love to overcome the limitations of
my characterisations and reveal a new dimension. I'd like to be so good an
actress someday that even if I had to wear a curtain cloth for a scene. No one
would notice."
The Dreamer I;'"    \\ || -
Movies and books fascinate her and she wants to remake everything that she
sees. If she's kicked about remaking Fedora, she also wants to make
Tehmina Durrani' s My Feudal Lord some day.
She got mail. On a good day, she'll e-mail everyone from Kajol, Bosky and
yours truly from Los Angeles. On abad day, she'll be anti-social. Then she'll
have 132 unread messages on her computer. Because she's like that only.
Sh^cries like a child. At anything. Cartoons move her, partings make her sad,
so do sad movies and sad endings. I saw her burst into tears when Farah
Khan won the Filmfare award for Best Choreographer in Virasat. Just like
that.
She'll never washher laundromat in public. If a biggie drops her from his film,
if aclose friend plays dirty, she' 11 make like a curtain and go down under. At
times like that she'11 never reveal her true feelings. Yeah, she'sprivate. But
once she confided, "It hurts awfully when those whom you care about stab
you in the back."
Recently a 40-something hero had her replaced with an under-age actress.
Tabu never reacted. She calmly stated, "Why do they claim to be your well-
wishers. I hate it when heroes make lame excuses like 'We make a good pair
on screen' or 'We are comfortable with each other'. That's hogwash. A good
film is a good film is a good film. I've worked with Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan,
Sunil Shetty and Rajat Bedi. I never bothered about my pairings. Yeh sab
kehne. ki baatein hai."
The Star
Tabu seems, on the one hand, aware of her powers and her role in the fantasy
Ufe of the public. In fact I remember her being thrilled to bits about being
called lovely in the streets of America and London (her character in the box-
office smasher Biwi No 1). But she also sees the absurdity of it all. Which is
why she carries herself lightly. At any rate, she doesn't take herself too seriously.
She's unselfconscious, she makes no bones about her breeding, background
or lineage. She's happy dipping glucose biscuit in her adrak chai. Yet she's
also happy scouring for Scandinavian furniture for her new apartment in the
up-market Lokhandwala complex.
Her writing boggles me. Be it her poems or her prose. Her flair, the sensitivity
she's able to coax out of her writing and her vivid gift of the imagination. Her
descriptions of a fading sunset in Manhattan, her reflections on the man-
woman relationship or her take on showbiz. But she'll never part with her
writings. I want her to get them printed. "Hmmm, we'll see," is all that she
retorts.
Her career has always zoomed-high and dipped low. But you couldn't fault
her. Even the klutziest kooh will agree that she's tops when it comes in front of
the camera. Even a lulu of a film like Satish Raushik's Prem, David Dhawan's
Saajan Chale Sasural or, Raj Sippy's 2001 were made just a tad tolerable
by a crackerjack performances by her. She chews up roles of sense and
nonsense the way kids chew gum. Just like that.
I personally thought she was her usual competent self in Maachis, but it was
Hu Tu Tu which was a milestone. Instead of just pirouetting and pouting, she
interiorised herperformance, acting from within as only she can. Quiz her
about the acting instinct and she'll pow wow with you. "Hey! don't make me
out to be something extraordinary. I'm just about okay." Modesty becomes
her.
The National award fox Maachis made her immensely happy. And she deserves it again this time for Hu Tu Tu.
Punjabi Patrika - Aug.
