He reached the\nYukon from Mexico where he\nhad cleared himself effectually of\na charge of murder laid against\nhim. lie is as well known in\nMexico as in lhe Yukon.\nA Good Loser\nRunning the Hoi Springs looked\nto be a profitable business, Inn\nFrank lost $2(10,(1110 on thai  ven\nture. However, he grew a garden\nof vegetables and llowers there\nthat was the envy of the whole\nNorth. Rainier was then- from Fairbanks, antl Charlie Bun-liter, \"the\nsunbeam purser\" of lhe Northern\nNavigation Company, Mollis Loon-\ney, Bill Harding, Nick Torolla,\nPilot Schafcr of the White Pass\nCompany, Robert Milvano of the\nRussell King Outfit, Milvano and\nMcl.arcn, Commodore Barker of\nthe Northern Navigation Company\nMrs. Charlie Vifquin, oh her way\nto New York, Horace McKay,\nFishery Inspector, and amongst\nmany others last mentioned but\nnot least George Do Lion, famous\nin the days of the Villa De Lion\nacross the Yukon where lhe \"Mar-\njorie\" took her crowds of passengers.\nEvery Berth Full\nTo the true old timer every I\nname has its associations and i\nthen* were many, many more.]\nThis is the Royal's second lasi\ntrip for the season, the water in\nthe Yukon being freer than usual\nof ice just now. livery available\nlierth w;is booked ihore being\naltogether some 220 passengers\nfrom Skagway southbound.\nNews was brought south by\nthe Princess Royal this morning\nthat jusi as she was pulling out\nof Skagway discovery had boon\nmade of a brutal attempted murder\nand robbery there. The victim\nis Charlie Gupiill, purser of tho\nAlaska Steamship Company, and\nthe motive for the crime was\nevidently robbery as the purser\nwas believed lo have upwards of\n18000 on him, the amount represented by bookings for the steam-\nI or Dolphin belonging to his company.\nAt the  lime  the  Royal  pulled\nlout, all that was known was that\nla foreigner had attacked Guptill\nwith a double-bitted axe doing\nhim dreadful injury, and the lirsi\nj news was that he had died within\na few minutes. Later information\nobtained through enquiry made\nat Juneau where the news* had\nbeen wired was to the effect that\nthe purser wa.s still alive, and lhat j\nhopes wore held out for his recovery. The money wa.s believed\nto be all in the hands of the\nmiscreant who escaped, but was1\nbeing closely pursued, and had\nprobably been captured by the\ntime the Royal reached hen*.\nNo further news of the matter\nhad reached Rupert by wire up\nto the lime of writing.\nThe injured man, Charlie I'.\nGuptill, is a very well known\nin the present day north, though\nhe Wiis not an old timer of the\nKlondike days.
