B.C.
The Optimist
DELIVERED TO ANY ADDRESS IN SECTIONS 1, 5
AND 6 EVERY DAY FOR
50c PER MONTH
Fura Will be Cheaper
That there is likely to be a drop in the
1 price of furs next season is the opinion
| of a prominent Montreal wholesale
i furrier. Skunk, frequently sold under
the name of Alaska sable, has become
ISO fashionable that prices for skunk
furs have gone'up tremendously, nearly
, doubled in fact, during the past two or
three years, causing trappers to redouble
their efforts, and half the farmers' boys
in the country to turn trapper, with the
result that the trade is flooded with
skunk skins, and the opinion is expressed
that prices in this fur are bound to come
down, even though the appearance
and splendid wearing qualities of the ful
will doubtless keep it quite as fashionable
i as ever.
Persian lamb is another fur likely to
drop in price, owing to overstocking by
Ciermun dyers, who are now selling many
j of their lambskins at cost price in preference to holding stock, with ri*k of
injury and deterioration, on what may
prove a losing chance. Muskrat, dyed
and sheared, sold as Hudson seal, and
used in immense quantities for coats
and jackets, has been very popular, but
incident al reports would seem to indicate that there is some dissatisfaction
when seal dyes have been too strong
for the pelt, thereby affecting the
wearing quality. During the past few-
seasons there has been a very large
trade done with Europe in this fur, but
the increase in price and the question
as to durability have combined to kill
the demand there, a demand which is
not likely to be renewed until prices
. have gone down again.
Another factor responsible for thc
threatened lowering of proices is the
probable falling off in the European
demand for many kinds nf fur. The
tendency there ui lhe present time
! seems to be towards a more exclusive
use of their own furs, tu ugainst a previous demand for the smooth, straight-
haired furs of this continent.
Have Too Much to Do
The trouble wiih most of the women
in the world is that they have too much
to do.
They arc not able to specialise in one
thing.
We predict failure when we see a
man following up two or three lines at
otic", but what about the woman who
tries to be nurse, housekce|>er, mother and society woman all at the same
time? The wonder is ihat some poor
-..ul fails in some branch, but ihai all
women do not make botches of iheir
lives.
Fur one woman who s|>cnds her day
in idleness, wai.ed on by trained servants, who eook, mend, scrub and take
care of her children, there are a dozen who, in addition lo all the ordinary
household tasks, have to be dressmakers as well and some who, in addition, are forced to attempt lo earn
a living because of the scarcity of means
and thc present high prices.
S'.tne day .there is going to be a millennium for the tired woamn, we are
ti Id. Co-o|H-ri.live kitchens, co-ojiera-
tive nurseries and co-operative sewing
rooms are going to lighten her burdens so thai she may have time to
sit down occasionally with a book. K. MacMillan, one of the Assistant Inspectors of Forest
Reserves, is a technically trained forester, who has given much attention to this
subject. His figures have been based on the latest obtainable data, including a
careful estimate of the stand of timber originally standing in the forests of Canada
and ihai s.ill remaining; the difference between these two, less the amount estimated
to have been cut by liumbermen represents the amount destroyed by tire.
pJftKvcn this estimate of the ratio of limber burned to timber cut is not as large
as some given elsewhere. Senator \\V. C. Edwards, the present president of the
Canadian Forestry Association, and one of the best-known and most successful
lumbermen of ihe Otiawa valley, is on record as saying that in that valley ten
times as much timlier has been destroyed by lire as has been cut hy the lumbermen.
The past summer has brought very prominently to public notice the forest
lire problem, especially in regard io the fires in the states of Montana and Idaho
and, more recently, in northern Minnesota, where so many towns were destroyed.
Tlie Canadian Forestry Association hits for years been endeavoring to arouse
puhlic intention in regard to these fires, and of late the work of the Commission of
Conservation has been largely directed in the same direction.
Notes and Comments
To the list of work done by thc present council as printed in the Optimist
three weeks ago must now be added:
Extended the hours on which the hotel bars may keep open from eleven
to twelve o'clock.
There is one consolation the temperance party may have, Prince Rupert
has a strong tem|H*rance man for Mayor.
M. The
Bowmanville Statesman comos out llat-footcd as follows:
"Farmers will be surprised to be told that the articles appearing in this journal
and nearly all other country newspapers with scare headlines against reciprocity
are l>eing paid for, presumably, by manufacture!! for who else would spend so
much money to defeat the treaty'.' We are paid $5 a column for space for these
anti-reciprociiy 'alarmist' articles. Funny, isn't it, that after they have been
enabled io 'roll in riches" hy a protective tariff they are striving so hard lo prevent
some trade advantage! Ining given farmers, stockmen, fruitmen, and others who
will bcnelit by freer trade with our nearest neighbors? Don't you think it high time,
farmers, that you made known in some public way your own views on thc proposed
tariff pad as an offset to the hullabaloo set up by boards of trade, which are dominated largely by manufacturers, bankers, and financial men whose interests arc
closely allied with them."
A Dollar Saved .. .
... It has now transpired
that the l'illsbtiry-Washburn Intereata,
whose name il a household word w herever
bread is baked, are at the back of this
concern.
On the best of authority it may be
stated that the Pillsbury-Washlmrn
firm is about to build in the very near
future a llour mill of enormous capacity for the manufacture of a superfine
high-grade flour from wheat grown in
Northern Alberta and the IVace River
districts.
It has been recognized by this company that the further north the wheat
is grown the better the flour, and this
at the smae time is a recognized fact
the world over. For many years p;tst
the Hudson's Bay Company has been
growing wheal at '.heir poll at Kir,
Vermillion, which is Tim miles nonh of
Edmonton. At the Chicago World's
Fair, held in ISi'U. flour manufactured
from wheat grown by the Hudson's Bay
Company at the f.rt. won the gold
medal, the highest of all honors which
it was in the power of the executive to
bestow, and since that time it has been
an incentive for a number of shrewd
Americans to develop their plain and
await ihe great opportunity which railroad facilities would give them.
The added facilities which will be
afforded by the completion of the
Panama Canal have not been lost sigh
of and they will add materially to the
merchantable quality of the pn duct.
As to the exact capacity of the mills
which are about to be erected and established on the Inlet the details are not
yet to hand, but within a very few daya
they will be available.
It is understood that the railroad line
will be in operation by the time that
the mills are ready to work, and that in
the meantime all the grist that comes to
the coast by any method will be speed-
ily handled. Shipping facilities will be
established and wharves, warehouses
and elevators built, and the whole enterprise will be one of the greut est on
the coast of British Columbia.
Notice
Charles M. Wilson begs to inform
his friends that he voluntarily retired
from the Real Estate Exchange Inst
year for reasons which he will be pleased to explain to anyone interested. 64-67
LOCAL DEBATERS
IN KEEN CONTEST
DECIDED RECIPROCITY WOULD
NOT BE GOOD FOR CANADA
Young Men of the Baptist Brotherhood Debated the Isaue -Messrs.
Wood and Rogera Got the Judge'a
Verdict after Cloae Argument.
Reciprocity is not a good thing for
the people of Canada according to the
winning side in a debute on the subject
at the Baptist Brotherhood lust night.
The wording of the resolution under
discussion waa: "Resolved lhat the
reciprocity agreement would be beneficial to Canada." The debaters were
Messrs. W. H. Stuart and Hansen for
the affirmative and Messrs. W. W.
Wood and Clyde Rogers for lhe negative.
The debute was keenly contested. There
was plenty of rivalry und sharp rebuttal
to keep the audience intensely interested.
Mr. Stuart wus the first speuker. He
said its a Liberal he would be disloyal
to Canada and good |>olitics if he did
not seek to defend reciprocity as beneficial to Canada. He said that reciprocity would permit the consumer
to purchase goods on either side of the
line without paying the present high
tarilT. Reciprocity wits one step toward
free trude und free trade hud made
Great Britain the financial centre of
the money market of the world. She
hud also been the birthplace of the
greatest industries. The woikingman
would be benefitted by this ug.eement.
Smuggling would be prevented because
unnecessary. Our coul deposits and
other minerals would be developed,
timber industries flourish, wheat und
other agricultural products find a ready
market and in every respect Canada
from Atlantic to Pacific would be
benefitted by reciprocity.
In leading the op|tosition Mr. Wood
said he would present a series of facts
that would prove conclusively that the
reciprocity agreement would be a fatal
blow to the best interests of Canada.
He further stated that reciprocity was
a certain ,tep to annexation and the
destructicn of loyalty to the mother
country'-. The implement manufacturers
of Ontario and Quebec were yet in their
infancy and needed protection from their
large corporation rivals across the line.
Canadian wheat is rigidly inspected
and a certificate of inspection goes with
all exported grain. It, therefore, sells
at a higher figure than American wheat
in the markets of the world. It will
certainly be beneficial lo the American
miller to take this wheat free of duty
to Duluth or other distributing points,
mix it with poor American grain and
ell the finished product accompanied
by the certificate of inspection, at I
the highest price in the foreign market .
This poor grade of Hour, made possible j
bv reciprocity, will destroy the repu-
tation of Canadian wheat. It is a plausible argument that 90,000,000 of American
people will make a great market fo:
our wheat but the fact remains true
that these people export their own
wheat products und will only need our
min to Increase their export trade.
Railroads will suffer if not be forced to
declare deficits. Reciprocity will compel
them to lose the long haul East und j
Wesl to Atlantic und Pucilic ports its
trude will be diverted to the shorter!
routes 'North und Southi to the cities j
of the United States.
The reciprocity ugreement said Mr.
Wood,    was   unconstitutional    as   the;
government was not fortified with the'
mandate of the people. It was not
B plunk in the puny platform at the
last election. The speaker though,
thut this wus a sufiicient answer to:
Mr. Stuart's cry of loyalty to the
Liberal party.
Mr. Hansen in supporting the affirms-1
live gave a brief review of the history 1
of reciprocity declaring that in every
instance reciprocal relations hud been
beneficial to Canada.
