Attracted by the
ruddy glow in the heavens thousands
flocked to the waterfront from all parts
of the city. Every theatre was emptied
immediately, as if the fire had suddenly
broken out in that particular building.
The flames were fanned by a southwest
wind which approximated to a full gale,
and the fire spread with great rapidity
despite the efforts of the fire-fighters,
Great yellow tongues of flame would
shoot up carrying with them burning
brands and shower of sparks that fell
on adjoining buildings over a wide area.
Soon the fire seized with greedy grasp
warehouse after warehouse and block
after block, until it was feared the entire
northern part of the town was doomed.
It was common to hear spectators remark that it was the most amazing
and disastrous fire since the one of eighty-
nine, when the whole city was laid waste.
The stable on Elliott avenue where the
fire started and the Galbraith-Bacon
docks were seen to be doomed when the
first streams begun to play on them, and
while attention was being paid to the
saving of adjoining buildings the great
roof of the Galbraith warehouse fell in
with a crash and an immense roar of
ember-laden flame. Both fire boats had
big streams playing and practically the
entire fire force of the city was centered
at the spot . Within the fire zone men
and women struggled, women screaming
and children wailing. The thousands of
occupants of business houses, hotels,
lodging houses and residences were wildly fighting to escape against thoae
rushing in to witness the fire.
Hundreds of the beleagured lingered to
hastily gather up their most cherished
belongings and it is feared many tarried
too long and their charred bodies will
tell the tale when the piles of debris are
worked over. For an hour there was an
immense crowd fleeing south with the
impact of a greater crowd struggling to
witness the spectacle, and in the struggle
many were trampled upon and had to
be taken to the hospitals. Later on
hundreds who had escaped from burning buildings walked the streets shivering in night clothes in the cold and pit-
less rain.
The ambulances seemed to be as busy
as the fire-fighters, Everywhere could
be heard the rapid clang-clang of their
gongs as the police endeavored to force
a way for them. The whole of the police
reserves were called out, but it was impossible to maintain the fire lines.
How many lost their lives is not yet
known. Three firemen are included in
the death toll. ,They were fighting heroically to stop the flames wrapping around
the storehouses and buildings between
First avenue and Wall street when they
were caught in an explosion which top
pled forward the front of the building.
As this fell a sheet of flame was carried
by the high wind right down the crowded street and the ambulances picked up
the most badly scorched. There may be
several bodies under the fallen walls.
Not far from the scene the firemen
operatingnn engine had to flee for their
lives and leave the apparatus to be destroyed , when live wires fell and were
entwined about them.
To Patrolman G. J. Gleason belongs
the credit of saving the life of one woman.
She was a roomer in Hotel Walfish, the
northern half of which was destroyed.
She had left the building with some of
her' valuables but apparently forgot
something dear to her. While the north
end of the building was a mass of flames
she rushed back through the entrance.
She was detected by the patrolman as
she disappeared uj> the stairs and he
immediately gave chase. He captured
her in the thick smoke and had to carry
her out bodily, she screaming and fighting against it.
Police Matron Dehan has issued a call
for clothing for women who escaped the
fire with the loss of all their possessions
Many were unaware of the dangerous
proximity of the Amines until the smoke
drove them out.
The loss will be immense and it is now
said one million dollars will not begin
to cover it. The area is said to approximate to that of the great fire of eighty-
nine, while the buildings are larger and
of a more costly character.
CAPTAIN B. L JOHNSON
WHO WILL COMMAND THE G.T.P.
STEAMER PRINCE RUPERT
One of the Youngest Officers on the
Pacific Coast and One of the Best
A Sketch of His Career as a Deep
Sea Sailor and Officer.
It will be learned with much pleasure
all along the coast that B. L. Johnson,
of Victoria, will have charge of the
Steamer Prince Rupeit, the first G. T.P.
coast steamer bet wee n Vancouver and the
city of Prince Rupert. Capt. Johnson
is only 32 years of age. He was born in
Liverpool Eng., and has spent many
years on the seas. The fact that
he received the appointment as captain of the first Grand Trunk Pacific
boat is a guarantee that he stands with
the first rank of officers. His many
friends in Prince Rupert and all along
the coast will extend hearty congratulations to him and wish him every success.
Capt. Johnson is married and his
family lives in Victoria. He will, however, bring them to Prince ilupert to
live when the home port is established
here.
The Captain entered upon his
apprenticeship with Nicholson McGill's
sailing ships in 1891. He came to the
Pacific Coast on the ship Borrowdale,
from Liverpool, in 1894. He remained
Stock Exchange. The company was organized by a number of the leading
business men of the city, and received
its incorporation papers May 7, 1910.
In the meantime the offiers had secured
accommodations, and opened with its
first call on 'Change May 22, 1910. The
charter members, of which there are
twenty-five paid in entrance fee of $25
the exchange at present has 27 members
while the membership is limited to 40
at an entrance fee of $50. Daily calls are
held at 11 a.m. and the members holding seats are displaying a lively interest
in thc work, an interest that is destined
to continue and increase as the development of the properties and the formation
of new companies directs attention to the
fortunes to be made in local stocks. In
addition to handling Portland Canal,
Hazelton, Alice Arm and stocks of the
various other mining districts, the Board
will deal in municipal stocks and debentures, and industrial stocks of particular interest to local residents and investors, while all the Cobalt stocks can
be bought and sold. The Exchange keeps
in close touch with the Toronto Stock
Exchange, of which board Mr. Evans,
secretary of the exchange retains his
seat. As indicative of the wide-spread interest aroused in the local exchange, it is
interesting to note that the Seattle
Minnig Exchange has made overtures t
the local officials with the idea of maintaining close relations and to keep informed on the development of the districts and the work of the local body
NEW BUILDING INSPPECTOR
M. Alfred
Wedildahed, upon the request of Constable McDonald, got the Indians out
and started to work. They also brought
out their apparatus from the reserve
and everybody did well iin fighting the
flames. Then the writer states that Constable Fitzgerald went up to Wedildahed and accused him of trying to keep
the Indians from working and the latter
denied it. The Constable is also charged
with having knocked down an old man
and a scrap ensued in which several men
took part. The next morning Constable
Fitzgerald laid a complaint against Alfred
Wedildahed and he appeared for trial in
the afternoon. He was charged with
"unlawfully trying to stop the Indians
fighting the fire," and Barriman, agent
of Indian affairs, acted as counsel for
Wedildahed and as the Constable had
no evidence to produce the case was
dismissed.
