His signature was the first subscribed to the world's most famous State document. In the most realistic sense John Hancock pledged his life and
his fortune to the cause of the Revolution. He was one of the richest men in the colonies, holding investments in
banks, breweries, stores, hotels, and also owning a fleet of vessels. The seizure of one of these precipitated the
Boston massacre. In Revolutionary days and until his death he was a popular idol. When it was proposed to bombard Boston,
though it would have resulted in greater personal loss to him than to any other property owner, he begged that no regard be
paid to him because of his financial interests. While Hancock did not sign the-Constitution of the United States.he used his
great influence in its behalf, which awakened the gratitude of Washington."He was prepossessing' in manner, and passionately
fond of the elegant pleasures of life, of dancing, music concerts, routs, assemblies, card parties, rich wines, social dinners and
festivities!" Until the end of his life the people of Massachusetts delighted to honor him. In the stirring events preceding the
Revolution he was one of the most active and influential members of the Sons of Liberty. To this tireless worker for American
Independence Liberty was the very breath of life. He would have frowned upon any legislation which would restrict the natural
rights of man, and would have voted NO to prohibition enactments. It was upon the tenets of our National Spoken Word
that Anheuser-Busch 58 years ago founded their great institution. To-day throughout the length and breadth of the Free
Republic their honest brews are famed for quality, purity, mildness and exquisite flavor. Their brand BUDWEISER.
has daily grown in popularity until 7500 people are daily required to meet the public demand. Its sales exceed any other
beer by millions of bottles. A. E. Cooke, secretary of tho
MI.nisterin.1 Union of the Lower Main
land of British Columbia, spoko in
Nelson last night upon tho pamphlet
entitled "The Crisis In British Colum
hia." In the foreword to this pam
phlel:, which the. association slates is
prepnred upon, "facts'* which have
been "brought to light" by Moses Cots--
worth, .ft Is declared that it is not
published ."in any partisan spirit," It
Js'.fdrthor asserled that, a, strict in-
vostiga.tion 'into Hie "facts" hns heen
made hy tho ministers, who describe
themselves as. the "morn.Ii leaders of
the peoplo of this provinco."
An exa.mina.iion of tho pamphlet, imposing as may seem its array of figures timd qnoia.tions when dealt with
hy a, clever speaker on tbe platform,
reveals ils partizau and misleading
character. An analysis of the chnrges
whiph are made, the phraseology which
is .employed and the false allegations
whicli are contained in ils pages lead
Irreslstihly to one of two conclusions
—either Rev. A. E. August
ir-elnzc, for whom the firm of Bowser,
Reid. -& Wnllhridgo were acting ns
solicitors." That is a.nother "verified"
statement wliich is almost wholly untrue nnd wholly misleading,
Tho railway land repurchase act
Io which rcfereneo is mado did not
provldo for tho purchase of ono singlo
aero of land from the lato Mr. TToinzo.
The act provided only for the purchase of lands from the Canadian
Pacific railway.
Not only did the government buy no
la,nds from Mr. Heinze, but in 1918 it
passed an amendment, to tho Taxation
act with the specific purpose nf making it possible for tho province to
assess and. colled, taxes on ihe Heinze
property. Mr. Bowser, as attorney
general, not only introduced the Tnxn.
tlon act amendment hut devoted his
efforts to the prosecution, through tho
courts of a. legal fight which culminated in the decision of the supreme
court of Canada that Heinze must pay
tho faxes. C. R. Hamilton, K.C., was
solicitor for tho Heinze interests and
Mr. Bowser through counsel directed
tho caso for the province.
That Is the truth regarding these
further examples of tho "facts" which
havo been "verified" by Mr. Cooke and
his friends.
IWO NELSON MEN
AMONG WOUNDED
ALLEGATIONS REGARDING LAND
.]N THIS DISTRICT
''The Crisis" is chiefly concerned in
an effort to show lhat vast quantities
of land have been grabbed, looted and
stolen with the connivance of the government. Upon, page fi of this publication, which bas been prepared by
tho ministers upon the "facts" supplied by Moses Cotsworth and.whicl
tliey say they havo "verified" from
original documents, etc., appear some
statements concerning conditions in
the W|son district.
The assertion, is made that the report ..f the agricultural commission
has been "cleverly manipulated" to
"oover uii trie most, glaring instances
nf innd-gra.bbing in certain districts."
Thf 'pamphlet then refers Co a. statement ihat" "»,332 persons hold 108,26-1
acres nnd fi3R corporations hold 36,061
acres and says that H. Mr. Cooke and the sworn admission by Mr. C'ooko that he has no
knowledge r.f tbo "facts" stated therein, tho pamphlet, goes on:
"But. a shameful feature of lhe whole
Situation in these very districts is that
this land sn largely held by foreign
speculators is assessed at only Ifl
eents per acre."
That statement is as false and misleading ns Is the allegation that the
figures quoted have baen manipulated
"to -cover up the most, glaring instances pf land-grabbing."
CANNOT BASE MORAL ISSUE ON
MISREPRESENTATION
Thc Daily Xews has dealt specifically with Moses Cotsworth's allegations witli regard~te the Xelson <lls-
fcrlbt. They are fypical nf the char
aeier of (be. pamphlet which has been
unloaded upon Mr. Cooke and his min
Isterlal association. Statements concerning other parts of the province
hnve, nn-nnalj'fti.-J, been proved equally
parlizan, untruthful or misleading.
The claim of Mr. Cooke and his
associates that as "moral leaders of
lho people of this province" they nre
hi duty hound to circulate and support Iho pamphlet falls to the ground
.V "moral issuo" cannot endurlngly in
founded upon untruths, half-truths
and misrepresentation of facts.
To attempt to escape from tho hands
of the law seems to be a dangerous
amusement. Although definite details were lacking
the news was of enough interest to
bring about recovery of general values
from the early irregular trend', leaving
a number of net gains.
Foreign war conditions were responsible for the initial heaviness and contrary movements. The success of the
Austro-German campaign against Russia caused considerable selling of American stocks for London and other
European interests, with Canadian Pacific the weakest feature. That stock
at one time showed a loss of 4 points,
its decline -being again accompanied
by rumors of a downward revision of
its dividend.
Coppers were also under pressure,
some disappointment being expressed
at the moderate Increase of Anaconda's
dividend. Instead of »0 per cent quarterly rate it was hoped that the 75 per
■cent disbursement of 1913 -would be
restored.
United States Steel was again the
active feature but its range was narrow and without material change,
There wus a better tone to Sterling
and continental exchange, the improvement being mainly duo to tlie prospect
for additional .financing here.
Firmness ruled in, -bonds, regardless
of recurrent foreign orders. A. E. Cooke, secretary- of tho
Ministerial Union of lho Lower Mainland, in addressing a meeting in the
Nolson opera house hist night on "The
Crisis in British Columbia," a pamphlet of that name at present being
circulated.
Mr. Cooke followed closely thc contents of thc pamphlet, producing
documents wliich in some cases ho
claimed were the originals of those reported In its pages. These, ho said,
included reports and letters written to
and from government officials and
others who were concerned in certain
land deals referred to in the pamphlet.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Cooko
said: "One point 1 wish to enforce Is
that tliis is not in an ordinary sense
a political meeting. We are here to
discuss a political situation but not
from a political standpoint. Speaking
for myself and the other mombers of
the ministerial union, I want to say
that wc would not speak on behalf of
any political party. Tlie questions
which we have taken up are ones
wliich, in thc power they exercise on
the public, are ones which all honest
men must face."
"Wc have been faced by the old cry
that a minister lias no right to interfere in public matters, the cry of
'stick to tlie pulpit and leave political
questions alone.' But,*' he affirmed,
"if thero had heen more political pul
pits in the past there would have been
less corruption in Canadian politics."
Work God-Given, He Says
The speaker declared that his worli
for the good of Uie state was just as
tiod-given In ids estimation as his
work for his church or ills family. Uo
drew an analogy between the position
of i In- ministers in this question and
that of a citizen seeing a neighbor
house broken into and robbed and
said: "When wc have proved our position that the house of the people is
being despoiled and looted, let no man
think that we arc going to keep silence
or be dragged away from the main
issue. The point Is, are the statements
in Uie 'Crisis* true or false? Wo do uot
claim to be infallible, but we have
done our best to malte sure of the facts
which wc put before you."
Mr. Cooke dwelt at great length on
thc character and achievements o
Moses Cot.*-1 wort ii, who, lie stated, con
trury to the suggestion of a coast
newspaper, is not a Jew, but an Eng:
Ui-.hii.un and a Quaker.
"Some public men as well as some
of thc press," he said, "seem on the
point of shedding tears because the
union has been 'had' by this Cotsworth
creature, but in view of the high
teem In which lie was held iu the post
by some of the provincial governments,
if the ministers have been hoaxed by
Mr. Cotsworth they have hud a good
precedent."
It was stated by the speaker that
never has there been a really businesslike endeavor on thc part of tiie government to put the people on the land
when they wanted to go, and followed
this up by a statement of figures
whicli ho claimed showed that govern
ment officials had issued misleading
reports calculated to show tliat there
was more land surveyed and ready for
pre-emption than was really available,
Tiie speaker quoted from the pamphlet and displayed u folder issued by
the government which he claimed is
at variance with m.ips which hud been
issued by the department of lands.
During his address Mr. Cooke made
;in appqal to his hearers in connection
with tlie taking over of the Ocean Kails
company by a syndicate in San Frun-
cisco, known as inelshbaker itros., In
the early part of 1911, lie said the
syndicate was German. He said it
was claimed lhat this company had
diclated terms to the government and
that it had made laws which would
allow thu company to engineer a vast
and fraudulent scheme to obtain certain concessions whicli the government alone had power to confer. He
said: "It has been said that these
Germans arc naturalized United States
citizens, but wc know how muoh naturalization papers mean these days,
and I tell you that the government Is
bartering away our heritage to this
German syndicate, lt is not Germans
that wc should be interning but tho
property of thc people. He stat
ed thut thc campaign was not sup
ported by any parly, but that If they
wanted support there was a party
whicli would contribute all that was
needed.
