The gold reserves of the Bank
of England, which were X-10,000,000
ou July 22 last, and whicli had fallen
on Aug. 7 to H 27,000,000, now stand
at the unprecedented figure of £69>
500,000,
Tlio central gold reserves after
three months of war amount to £80,-
000,000, almost exactly twice the sum
at which it stood at the beginning of
tiie crisis.
Mr. Asquith pointed out that the
bank rate, after fluctuations, now was
at about tiie level at which it stood
at this time last year. Food prices
had been kept on a fairly normal level
and though debt had been curtailed In
some directions uu/e in ploy ment had
heen rather below thc average. Iu
this connection Mr. Asquith paid a
tribute to the corporation of city financiers for relieving the situation.
He announced that the King, in recognition of this, had conferred a peerage on Sir Walter Cunliffe, governor
of the Bank of England.
Nothing to Dampen Hope.
Mr. Asquith told his hearers that
they should not be moved unduly by
the conflicting fortunes of a campaign
which was going to be a long struggle.
"There is certainly nothing," lie declared, "In the warfare of this hundred
days to dump our hope, to depress our
confidence or Impair our resolve. Perley Denies Report
That Food Contribution Allowed
to Lie on Docks.
(By Daily News Leased Wire.)
LONDON, Nov. 9.—Hon. George II.
Perley states that there is no truth
in the report published recently in a
London paper that Canada's foot! contribution had been lying neglected on
the docks owing to -failure to provide
sufficient accommodation for storage.
This report appeared In a London paper possessing unenviable notoriety
nowadays for the unreliability of its
special information but despite this
it was cabled to the United Slates and
leaked through to Canada. Mr. Perley
resents the circulation of such stories
in Canada, which, besides being quite
Inaccurate, can only engender bad
feelings among the workers in philanthropic causes.
The local government board, without exception, says Mr. Perley, has
dealt promptly with all cargoes from
Canada, which at tlie outside have
only remained In dock for n few hours.
As an example, it may be mentioned
thnt arrangements already liave been
made for dealing with the farmers'
contribution expected shortly.
WHAT DYSPEPTICS
SHOULD EAT
A PHYSICIANS ADVICE
"Indigestion and practically all
forms of stomach trouble are, nine
times out of ten, due to acidity; therefore stomach sufferers should, whenever possLble, avoid eating food that
Is acid- in its nature, oj- which by
chemicul action in the stomach develops acidity. Unfortunately, such a
rule eliminates most foods which are
pleasant to the taste as well as those
which are rich in blood, flesh and
•lerve building properties. This la the
reason why dyspeptics and stomach
sufferers are usually so thin, emaciated and lacking In that vital energy
whicli can only come from a well fee
oody. I-'or the benefit of those sufferers
who have been obliged to exclude from
their diet all starchy, sweet or fattj
food, and arc trylin** to keep up a mls-
rablK existence on gluten prouiirts, l
would suggest that you should try a
meal of any food 0r foods which you
may like, in moderate amount, taking
Immediately afterwards a icaL-poontui
" bisurated magnesia in a little hot
or cold water. This will neutralize any
acid whleh m-ay be present, or which
may bo tormed, and Instead of the
usual feeling of uneasiness and fullness, yon will find that your food
agrees with you perfectly.
