Eastern Canadians\nand Americans go to Switzerland to\nseo inferior mountain scenery to what\nthey hnve in their own country uud\nyet ilu nut know it.\nIt waa with n view to spreading information about these mountains,\nattracting to them tourists and mountaineers from all parts, studying the\nscientific phases oi mountains mid\nglaciers that the idea of organising a\nCanadian Alpine Club was born.\nThe Alpine Clubs uf Switzerland and\nAmerica have done much to popularise\nmountain resorts, and distribute iufcr-\nrrjation concerning them, It was felt\nthat Canada, with a grander Alpine\nlield than all thc rest, should show a\npatriotic interest in her own mountains, and hence the moveniont to\norganise 11 national club making the\nmountains ol Canada its special lield.\nThc credit oi the conception is probably due to A. 0. Wheeler, who bus\nbeen in charge of the topographical\nsurvey of the mountains lor some\nyears, and bus come to be one of tho\ngreatest Alflinc enthusiasts ol Canada,\nlu Rev. Dr. Herdmun and Rev. Sir William Mulock, Ibe\nlate Minister of Labor, introduced\nsuch legislation, but it was opposed\nby the labor unions, and, as we\nbelieve, most unju-titialy. Strikes\nan-.i lock-out* affect the community\nas a whole, and the public interest\nis entitled to the due protection of\nthe Government. Strikes and lockouts make for lawlessness, national\nwaste, and productive loss. They\nare unnecessary, and a relic of\nindustrial barbarism. In the i ase\nof the Winnipeg street ear strike,\nPresident McKenzie, sitting in his\noffice at Toronto, hundreds of miles\ndistant from the scene of the trouble\nwas responsible lor the most disgraceful acts ever win, -,1 in it\nCanadian city. We ki I ng\nof the merits of the matti r- in\ndispute, but we do know tl il the\nstrikin-.' employes offered lo refer\ntheir en-,- entirely lo arbitratioi\nPresident McKenzie and the Street\nRailway Company refused such a\nfair prop isition, and hem \u2022 I -\nthe cause uf the trouble.\nTbe Street Railway Company\nexist; by reason ol a franchise conferred, on it by the citizens of\nWinnipeg^.'! franchise so valuable\nthat tbe company's Bbares ha*e\nrisen in value from pur of ^ 1.00 to\n$3.00 or fl.Oi. The Streot Railway\nC,,ii,puny has prospered as the\nresult of the growth of the city and\nthe owners have had the value of\ntheir investment- enormously increased. Un the other hand the\nfame growth has increased tin-\nvalue ol house properly, and rei *.-\narc-steadily increasing. Trices for\nproducts arc increasing also, ami\nthe company's employes as a body\nfelt that on current wages Umy\ncould barely keep their families,\nThey asked to share in the corn-\npan j's prosperity by an increase\nin their pay. The sympathy shown I\nby the citizens of Winnipeg ivllli\nthe striking employes showed they\nbelieved tlie men to he right and\ntin- fact Ihnl the company refused\narbitration was n protly strong indication that they knew ihey wci\ngetting away will, something that\ndid nol belong lo tin-in, and that\nthey mighl have to forego, in tbe\nevent oi a hearing before u fair\ntribunal, With compulsory arbitration Ihere could have been no\nstrike accompanied by public in\nconvenience, the calling out of the\nmilitia, and thy outrage on public\ndecency thai accompanied it.\nUntil the principle ol compulsory\narbitration of labor disputes is\nrecognised the same scenes muy be\nre-enacted in any city in Canada,\nTHE WINNIPEG STRIKE.\nRalph Connor Speaks Wholesome Truths.\nReferring to strike troubles Rev. C.\nW. Gordon (Ralph Connor) said :\n\" Is this the result ol twenty centuries ol Christian teaching that men\nwill fall upon each other like beasts\nand club and butter each otlioi until\nthe city is plunged into n c ndilion so\nalarming that it has to bo placed under martial law?\n\" Sell-preservation may lie the lirst\nlaw of nature, but Ihe attitude of the\nother man must always be respected.\nWhen selfishness and greed assort\nthemselves in the hearts of men, it is\nour duty to tukc an active interest in\ntho matter, and it is now lime for all\ntrue men to rise superior to the claims\not mere partisanship and do their\nutmost to restore tranquility.\"\nTHE WINNIPEG STRIKE,\n(By nn Onlookor.l\nA person looking on the Winnipeg\nstreet car strike, and reading the\naccounts of it sent out by the Assuci-\nuted Press, cmild not recognise that\nthe scenes were one and tho sume.\nThe telegraphed reports ol the Aaso-\natod l'resi were grossly exaggerated.\nThere was no rowdyism or lawlessness\nthat should ,not have been perfectly\ncontrolled by nn efficient police force,\nheaded by n cool-headed and unprejudiced mayor. Thero was not the\nslightest necessity for calling out the\nmilitia, ordering them to load with\nbull cartridge to lire on the citizens of\nWinnipeg, fixing havonets to transfix\nthem, or placing a loaded Maxim gun\non tlie streets oi Canada's great central metropolis. These scenes were a\nlasting disgrace to the administration\nof Winnipeg's chief magistrate, Mayor\nSharpe, uud a gross abuse of tlie law.\nWhat are the (acts? The city ol\nWinnipeg is unfortunately crowded\nwith unemployed whole curiosity was\nnaturally aroused by such an even! as\na street car strike, aid who congregated on the streets for want of something better to do. With a few exceptions these people took no band in\nauy trouble. In a crowd ol this kind\nthere are always a lew who lose their\nheads and these lew made what trouble there washy cutting the tiolley\nropes, throwing some stones and mud,\nand in one case trying to set lire to a\near left on the streets. These men\ncould easily have been gathered in by\nthe police. As [or the striker-, they\nwere most orderly.
