APRIL 27th 1912\nNo: 17\nCranbrook-'The Star City of the Kootenays'\nWinning Slogan in Our Recent Contest\nIn another part of this issue can be seen some of the other titles given to Cranbrook\nAll are agreed that Cranbrook has a big future, and that it's influence\nwill be felt in the Development of the District\n\"Other Towns their Horns are Blowing, We have blown no horn \u2014 But Still We're Growing\"\nPanama Canal and B. H,\nHatawny, a Ban Francisco financier,\nwbo in here in connection with some\nlegal business, last nidi* expressed\nhis opinion of British Columbia,\nwhich he has visited frequently during the past ten years and in which\nhe has large interests. Mr. Hatha-\nwny, , is a member of the Flying Legion, nn organization of prominent\nbusiness men in the Golden Gate\nCity, which will this summer visit\nHritisb Columbia, and is a leading\nmemoer of the executive of the great\nWorld's fair which m ii'.' will mark\nHan Franciecoe's celebration of the\nopening of the Panama Canal.\nFIFTY MILLIONAIRES COMING\nThe Flying Legion, for whose visit\nto this province this snmmer Mr.\nHathaway hns heen making arrange\nroents at Victoria and Vancouver, ls\nmade up of prominent business men\nfrom such bodies as the Chamber of\nCommerce, the City Council, The\nManufacturers Association, nnd the\n\"Producers association and the Worlds\nFair association. The calibre of the\nmen who make the excursions for\nwhich it wns organized may he guag-\ned by the fact that .among the 138\nwho visited Seattle two years ago,\n47 were millionaires. Special trains\nnnd special boats, luxuriously furnished, will convey the party to the\nconst about the end of July.\nMEANS MUCH PUBLICITY\nWith tho party will travel representative* of the . A few years\nago, a lack of knowledge as to the\nsuccessful marketing of these intercrops, such as small fruit nnd vegetables,, together with n wave of enthusiasm for absolutely clean cultivations of orchards, discouraged the\npractice. There hns recently been a\nchange in both respects. A great Increase In the available market, nnd\nthe discovery thnt carload production wns essential to success with\nmain-crop vegetables, together with\nexperimental proof that careful men\ncould grow inter-crops with financial\nsuccess nnd without injury to the\ntrees, materially altered the situation.\nThere are, however, certain requisites to success. The soil must ho\ndeep, in good physical condition,\nfertile, nnd be possessed of adequate\nmoisture. A soil In condition to support only the growth of the trees\ncannot carry both trees and intercrop without injury to the former. A\nfirst step Is to get the soil in proper\ncondition by the use of cover crops or\nbarnyard manure.\nThe climate must also be suitable.\nWealthy apples thrive nnd attain tbe\nbest results in the district where tomatoes and corn can be grown successfully. Early vegetables are successful when they can be produced in\ntime for their market. Some non-irrigated districts nre so dry in the\nsummer time that mnny inter-crops\nrequiring a large amount of moisture\nsuffer or fail. These points all require local study.\nThe third important requisite to\nsuccess, and perhaps the most important, is tbe market. Co-operative\nmarketing ls almost essential in getting u new district under way. Car\nloud production au mentioned above,\nIs often most desirable where a careful study of tbe entire situation, success is reasonably assured.\nThere is usually u living to be\nmade from tbe land while the trees\nare coming into bearing nge. Mnny\ncrops which will bring good returns\ncan bo grown between tbe rows of\ntrees while they nre young, but It\nshould always be remembered that\ntbo young trees are of tbe first importance, and upon their present\nhealth and vigor depends the future\nusefulness of the orchard.\nInter-cropplng of young orchards is\nStrike at Cranbrook\nOn Thursday morning 14\u00b0 men em\nployed on thn sewers went to tbelr\nwork as usual nnd without notice of\nany kind refused to begin work say\ning they were going on strike if the\nengineer would not pay thom $3.00\nper day of 10 hours, or $2.7fi for n\n9 hour day. It is by\nInjudicious cropping, however, that\nyoung orchards are oltan most seriously injured. Extra care should be\ntaken to maintain the fertility of the\nsoil by the application of manure aad\nfertilizers.\nThe growing of light crops is a\nmeans of keeping the land stirred\nwhen it might otherwise be neglected,\nand if tbe grower is careful to sue\nthat the physical condition of the\nlaud is improved, and adds enough ot\nplant food to supply tho loss, the\nlight cropping of orchards for the\nlirst few years may be a decided ben\netit. The danger Is that tbe fruit\ngrower might continue too long and\nexpect too much from it.
