Euery event brought j
forth several entries and the competitions were always close and exciting,
some of them remarkably so.
The manner in which the whole affair
was managed, and the satisfaction it
gave to everybody, was the point most l
worthy of comment. There was never
a hitch in the proceedings, and never
an objection to the way in which things
were being conducted. Wherever it
was found more to the general liking
the printed programme was altered
without discussion or delay, and event
followed event so rapidly that no one
had an opportunity to feel the approach
of impatience.
It is not always, in giving credit for
successes of this nature, that a newspaper feels justified in specializing, but
this was a case where public opinion
must have been unanimous, were a
special vote of thanks to be tendered,
that S. It is the war song of
the Nootka Indians seventy five years
ago. The general meaning is, "You
little know what brave warriors we
are. Poorly can our foes fight us when
we come on with our daggers."
It appears in a book entitled, "The
Adventures of J. R. Jewett, Three
Years a Prison er Among the Nootka
Indians," a book published in 1824,
and it is one of the many literary finds
made by the Library Commissioners in
the search for new books for the library.
The volume is of va'ue to students
of ethenology as the author deals
at great length on the customs and
mode of living of our Siwashes before
they were affected by the advent of
the whiterr.an. And every page is
crowded with interesting anecdote and
story. Briefly: About the yea*1 1715
a Spanish vessel visited the Nootka
tribe on a trading trip. One of the
^Nootkas stole a chisel and the captain
of the ship fired his cannon among
the native canoes, killing a large number of Indians. Five years after-
-v.'ards 'the ship Boston, from Boston
on a similar cruise, called at Nootka
and the chief of the tribe, Marquinna,
killed all the crew but Jewett, the
author, and the ship's carpenter,
Campbell. They made these two men
slaves, and spared their lives that
they might teach them the art of
carpentering and armoring.
Jewett minutely describes these
savages in their daily lives and states
that they were disgustingly filthy,
but modest and never given to excess.
* In fact, before going to battle or on
arduous whaling trips they went into
most rigid training, the men absenting then, selves from their wives, fasting much and constantly rubbing their
skins with branches to harden them
while standing in the water. To show
their fortitude they ran spears through
their sides, being careful not to touch
a vital part, and thus danced for hours
before the chief men of, the tribe.
They were dressed in skins. All the
head men of the tribe wearing sea
otter skins, gathered in beneath the
arms and reaching to their knees. The
author says many of the girls of the
tribe were as white as the ladies of
the southern part of Prance, and he
had never seen more beautiful young
girls. He was compelled to marry the
daughter of a neighboring chief, whom
he says was remarkably beautiful.
Jewett states that he repeatedly saw
the Indian women with their eyes
turned to Heaven praying to Quahootze
their mysterious god. They were cruel
as well as kind, revengeful as well as
most considerate to friends. Numerous white crews were put to death by
being held down and stones pushed
into their mouths till they suffocated.
They always held, explains the author,
that these cruelties were practiced to
avenge the death of their tribesmen
by whites, who would never have been
molested if the whites had not first in
augurated the system of murdering the
Nootkas on the slightest provocation.
In 1823 the ship Lydia arrived
from Boston and Jewett affected his
escape by stratagem. The chief being
sure of his friendship asked him to
write a letter to the captain saying
that he would trade with him and treat
him well. Jewett wrote a letter but
it was to the effect to hold the chief as
hostage until he and Campbell were
put on board. This was done, and
although the Indians were furious at
what they claimed was his treachery
the two white men escaped unharmed
after being slaves to the tribe for three
years. —Saturday Sunset.
"Have you ever been South?" asked
the man from Florida.
"No, sir;" confessed the Chicago
man.
"Then you have never seen our
southern soil?"
"Oh, yes, I have."
"Where?"
"On the strawberries you ship us
from your state."
<§
#>
I
Job Printing and
Stationery.
^###ۤ1
m
While a penurious grocer was telling his new boy how careful he must
be a fly settled on a bag of sugar. Woodward's farm.
Report on Waters Case.
Chief Constable Cox returned on
Wednesday from Victoria where he
gave evidence at a coroner's inquest
following his investigation of the death
of the Waters brothers. In the case of
Horace Waters, whose body was found,
an open verdict was returned, and the
police department has decided that
nothing further can be done for the
present.
Chief Constable Cox and Constable
McLeod were assisted in their search
by Messrs. Flovick, Brennan and Riley
all of Clayoquot. The party arrived at
Tsow-in on the 22nd and spent two
, days in making the most thorough
| search of the locality which has yet
; been made. The search commenced
I from the spot where the body of Horace Watters was found and the search
! ers continued outwards until the entire ground for a radius of over a mile
was covered practically every foot of I
the difficult country being investigated by the party all of whom are skilled in bush work. The ground rises
abruptly from the sea shore and the
search was carried far up the side ot
the mountain to a point beyond which
it was practically impossible to go.
Where the scream near which the hat
of Harvey Watters was found, comes
through the hills, is about the only
level portion of ground and this was
also well gone over but without result. Where the body had been lying
was a quantity of timber and broken
branches. Two pieces were brought
down by Chief Constable Cox, both of
which were found lying right at the
spot where the head of the body had
been resting when Constable McLeod
found it. Whether these pieces were
the means by which the life was beaten out of Horace Watters is merely
a conjecture. There was no marks
upon either of them to indicate that
they were the instruments of death
but they will be examined.
No information was gained that
would indicate that Indians had any part
in the tragedy. The investigations
which have been held show that only
three Indians saw the two brothers
I alive after they landed at Tsow-in on j
March 23. These were an aged Indian
named Sooter who told Constable Mc-!
; Leod when the latter made his first
search, that one of the white men had
j appeared sick and depressed. The
other two were an Indian named Stick
i Jim and his wife who saw the brothers
! the day they landed from the Tees.
These Indians are now up the coast
: and the other Indians who were camping a few miles away from Tsow-in
have moved to Rivers Inlet.
Beyond the finding of the piece of
skull and the more thorough search of
| the whole locality this last attempt to
discover some details of the occurrence
has proved abortive.
i. R. Riley, one of the searchers, stated to Chief Constable Cox that he had
been a passenger on the Tees when the
two Watters brothers travelled to
Nootka. On the evening before they
; landed at Tsow-in he had heard Horace Watters say to his brother Har-
\\ vey "Get out of bed and you will feel
better," to which the other, who had
been drinking very heavily and was
in bad condition answered "For God's
sake man leave me alone. I am too
sick to get up. I am ready to die."
When the brothers landed Harvey
was clearly suffering from his excessive drinking on the way up to
Tsow-in and was apparently feeling-
sick and depressed when the Indian
Sooter saw the two white men after
they had landed at Tsow-in as the
condition of one of them was noticed
by the Indian.
Use the "Bulldog" Door-Catch
and keep the Flies out.
It reaches out and draws the door shut.
