A letter has been received in Edmonton from Fort St. John on Peace River from one of the Fresno party, who are wintering up there. It states that the journey from St. John to the Nelson River is practicable by horses and flat sleighs, and is about 200 miles long. Horses are no use-after the Nelson is reached, but the journey by boat down the river is comparatively easy. Very encouraging reports have been received of prospects on the Liard. __* new time table will go inlo force on the C. & E. railway nest month. Trains will leave Calgary for Edmonton three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This is a feature of all mining countries, for wliich no really effectual remedy has ever been devised, or for that matter has it been thought wise to attempt to prevent it. It is true that before any foreigner can take up a claim in the States he has to declare his intention of becoming a citizen. But this does nol make him any less a foreigner or more of .in American. As long 'as.it suits him he uses his declaration for his own benefit. If he decides to take up his permanent abode in the States he may or may not go on to take the oath of allegiance. If he feels like going back to his own country his declaration will not slop him. Itis impossible to see any benefit, wliich Canada would gain by adopting this policy either in Kootenay or the Yukon. MacNeill tells a good story of a party of BosUmians who outfitted in the east to go to the Klondike overland from Ashcroft. ' \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd UNEXPLORED^ COUNTRY Which May Turn Out as Good as the Yukon. In the opinion of Mr. J. H. McFarlane, who has been some time in the Cassiar country there is a vast extent of country lying around the beaten routes in that part of the province, which is just as likely to repay the prospector as any in the Yukon. The Cassiar country, in which the big strikt*s were made in the seventies, is only a vei y small portion of the whole. Difliculties of transportation, which the present rush to Klondike will induce capital to overcome, have hither- lo kept prospectors from spreading out, and exploring the country along the headwaters of the tributaries of the main streams. The country lying northwest from Dease River towards the head of the* Big and Little Salmon rivers has never been touched and should prove a rich district. Experienced prospectors will find, it a great ileal more to their advantage to lei the ru-ih pass on to Klondike and strike off into these bye districts for themselves. 'By taking time they can satisfy themselves that they are not leaving good ground behind them and. if they do not strike anything, can ilways drop dovvn stream to the Yukon and will probably find that by that time the horde of inexperienced gold seekei's has retreated, leaving plenty, of good claims behind them. Olf the trodden routes little or nothing is known about the country even quite close to the coast, and I have known good pay taken in coarse gold not more than 65 miles from the coast on the Unack river, which empties into the ht*ad of Behm's channel, 00 miles south of Wrangel. I lieard a trader called' Sylvester, who' used to trade at a post on the Liard named after him, say that S12S.0OO hatl been taken off Bedrock Bar on that river below the mouth of the Deasv* river. In my opinion the Stickeen route is the one to take. The river is easily navigable by steamer or boat, and I have sailed up the .whole length of it to Telegraph Landing. This will no doubt prove the favorite route next summer, but I would advise men, who know what they are about, to let the rush go on hy Teslin Lake and take in for themselves the coiintry-indicated-above-in-between.
