Grez has located\nthe Silvia claim from which he\nbrings specimens of the crop-\npings perfectly speckled wilh\ngold. The ledge, he tells us, is\nfrom 11 to IH inches, cutting its\ncourse through a slate formation.\nIt is a white quartz and the gold,\nMr. Gross says, is found most\nplentifully on the sides of the\nledge near the slate, while\nthrough the centre part runs a\nstreak of rich argentite. On the\nsame claim and running almost\nat right angles with the ledge\ndescribed above there i.s another\nvein ll' or U feet thick carrying\nbromide of silver in considerable\nquantities! Conklin and\n,1. W. Arthur. The ledge running through these claims is reported by tho owners to be nine\nfeet wide with three feet of ore\ncarrying, according to assays,\nJs.dl) in gold to the ton, 2- oss. of\nsilver, and ID per cert lead. The\nore is specked with galena and\nchlorides, and carries some grey\ncopper. The hanging wall is of\nbird's-eye porphyry, and the foot\nis talc and slate. Mary's\nlllll a very quiet and agreeable\nplace to live in.\nIMPORTANCE OF CHEAP TRANSPORTATION.\nTlie North Star mine is one of\nthe greatest silver-lead properties on the Continent. Some\nthousands of Ions of ore have\nalready been shipped from this\nmine, but though it is looated\nwilii in twenty miles of Port\nSteele, the cost of transportation lo American smelters has\nbeen so greal as to discourage\nthe active working of lhe initio,\nAt present u force of men lire al\nwork developing the property so\nas to be iu readiness for shipping\nou an extensive scale when sufficiently cheap shipping facilities\nhave been provided, N, P. Cur-\nran, lhe manager, slates that lim\ntons of ore per day could be continuously produced, and al an\naverage cost of not more than\nIf 1.75 per ton. The ore has a\ngross value of about ^>su por ton\nat the present prices of lead and\ncopper. The galena from this\nmine averages 70 per cent lend,\nor 1,400 pounds lo the ton. At\n\u202211 cents per pound, the lead\nvalue would thus be #59,50 per\nton. The oro produces about\n10 ozs. of silver to the ton,which\nat 52 cents would give $20,80 per\nIon. With the Crow's \"Nesl Pass\nRailway completed to Fort Steele\ntho mine will be operated at\ngreat prulit. If the mines here\nare treated as well Iiy the rail-\nroad as Slocan mines are, and\nthey should be, the Noi'th Star\nwill have a rale from Fori Steele\nto the smeller at (treat Palls of\n$7,50 per ton. Mary's river.\nWATERWORKS.\nThe PnoSPECTOU is Informed\nby Dr. Watt that 2lil tl l feet of pipes\nand four hydrants are now on\nthe way here via Golden, and\nthat M. Mclinies, who is now al\nCalgary, is arranging for an engine, pump, and electric light\noutfit. A tank 12x14 feet is to\nbe erected at a height of III foet\ninto which the water will he\npumped and out of which it will\nHow into lhe pipes for distribution. In case of tire thu water\nwill he pumped directly from the\npower house. The excavation\nfor the pipe line will be begun\nin a few days.\nFORT STEELE HOSPITAL,\nThe hospital board have taken\nover from the contractors, Woodman & Jones, the new hospital\nbuilding, which is now finished,\n('.
