Mever, while Dr.\nMacLean easily secured the one\nawarded for gentlemen.\nTom McAulay was in town\nthis week on business in connection with his mining claims at\nChesaw. Tom is one of the oldest pioneers in the Boundary.\nHe arrived in 1887 and placered\nat Rock Greek. He built the first\ntrail to Camp McKinney, and ran\nthe first hotel at Midway,\nAt four o'clock last Saturday\nmorning, Billy McLean of Ash-\nnola^ died in Hedley. and wats\nburied in Princeton on Tuesday.\nHe was one of the early railway\ncontractor., around Nelson and\nthe Slocan. He leaves a'wife\naud two children. J. G. McLean of Seattle is a brother.\nH. F. Stow, a prominent lawyer of Calgary has enlisted as a\ncommon soldier in the 82nd. He\nis the right kind ot a patriot, and\ndid not have to receive a commission, before he took up arms in\ndefece of his flag and country.\nAt one time Stow was manager\nof the Bank of B. N. A. in Greenwood.\nDr. C. J. McCullough, Dentist,\nhas opened an office in the Pacific Hotel, and will be in Greenwood until December 4. Peck, secretary of tbe\nMidway Ladies Aid sends The\nLedge the following account of a\nrecent pleasant event in that town:\nThe Ladies Aid of Midway, held\na very enjoyable entertainment at\nthe home of Mrs. R. D. Kerr, on\nTuesday evening, Nov. 16. for the\nbenefit of the Patriotic Fund. The\nhouse was crowded with gay people from nearby towns, some of\nthem even coming from Grand\nForks to participate; also people\nfrom Rock Creek, Toroda, and\nBoundary Falls. There were no\ndrawbacks whatever to the perfect\nfreedom and gaiety of everybody.\nDancing, cards and fortune telling were the features of the evening and were indulged in until a\nlate hour. Mr. Julian of Rock\nCreek very kindly favored us with\nsongH.\nThe Ladies \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd Aid wish to thank\nthe Bnsh orchestra for their kind-\nneas in playing their usual delightful music for the dancers; also all\nothers who helped as accompanists.\nMiss Borders is to b6 congratulated upon her happy faculty of\ntelling fortunes. May her own be\nas happy as the fortunate ones.\nA most delightful luncheon was\nserved by the ladies. Everyone\nwas glad to contribute his or her\nshare of the entertaining and when\nit came to donating were most liberal in tbe noble cause of patriotism. The receipts of tho evening\nwere $70.\nWestern Float\nCows at Alice Siding are stealing\nhay.\nwill  have a\nin\nFrozen to Death\nLast Friday with some com:\npanions, George Morris went hunting near the No. 7 mine. In tracking a deer he became separated\nfrom his comrades. When he did\nnot return to camp, the provincial\npolice and many others searched\nfor him until Sunday morning\nwhen his body was found lying on\na trail, just a few yards from the\nNo. 7 road, about a mile from\ncamp. Being a lad of 15, and\nthinly clad he became exhausted,\nand falling on the trail was frozen\nto death. The body was removed\nto the undertaking parlors in\nGreenwood, and interment took\nplace yesterday afternoon. His\nparents Mr. and Mrs. John Morris,\nreside at''Boundary\" \"Falls, and in\nthis sad, tragic, \"and agonizing\ntrial, they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.\nWe must bow to the inevitable, for\nthe unbending laws of nature, and\nthe ruthless hand of death spares\nno one. We must be brave and\nlook beyond t*he shadows, until\ntime heals the wounds that are\ncaused when a loved one suddenly\npasses to the great beyond.\nTwo Women\nThe world stands aghast at the\nunspeakable barbarity in the execution of MisB Cavell by the Germans\nin Belgium. If there were no\nother crime to place the Kuns beyond the pale 0. civilization this\nwould suffice. Miss CaveIPe offence was, being overmastered by\nher womanly impulse, she assisted\nBritish and French soldiers out of\nBelgium.\nCowering in her cell in the\nWetaskewin, Alberta jail is an-\nI other woman awaiting the coming\nof the executioner. This is for\nhaving killed her husband. The\nevidence shows that she has been\ndriven to the brink of madness by\na cruelty more inhuman than bodily harm. It is claimed that the\nman who had swore to.love her,\nbrought his mistress into his home\nand flaunted her before the wife.\nThere are times when public\nopinion carries with it\ufffd\ufffda greater\n-Measure of justice than all the\ncourts in the land. Had public\nopinion been left to decide the fate\nof Miss Cavell, the British nurse\nthe greatest punishment she would\nhave received would have been a\nterm in prison.\nIf public opinion governed in\nthe case of the Wetaskewin women,\nit would liberate her and turn its\nvengeance upon the man who\nwrecked her life.\ufffd\ufffd\ufffdGolden Star.\nCol Carnegie, chairman of the\nshell coitfmittee, is reported to have\nstated that the committee has\nplaced an order with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting company\nat Trail for a supply of refined\ncopper in Canada, and that arrangements are being made for its\nproduction. They\nshould try Snooze.\nThis month the sawmill at Toroda Creek, belonging to Harry\nStanton was burned;\nBert Williams has joined the\n74th Battalion in Toronto. He\nwas raised in New Denver.\nMrs. Robert Henderson died in\nVancouver last month. Her husband discovered the Klondike.\nPat Walsh is now sole proprietor\nof the Kaslo hotel in Kaslo, having bought his partners interest.\n\"The Creston Review says that a\ncow recently died at Duck Creek,\nfrom eating yeast cakes, and an\numbrella.\nThis year 300 carloads of fruit\nwere shipped from Penticton. Of\ntbis amount 130 cars were loaded\nwith apples.\nRed Paddy was 62 years old last\nSaturday. He has a ranch near\nPrinceton, and is thinking about\ngetting married.\nWm, Shakespeare is now selling\ngroceries for a Vancouver house,\nbut he has nothing to do with the\nMerchant of Venice.\nCaptain W. T. Bragg died this\nmonth at Livingston Creek, Yukon.\nHe ran a stern wheeler out of\nRupe seven years ago.\nThe Columbia River Lumber\nCo., is opening up a big timber\ntract in East Kootenay, and has\n50 men at work building a road 20\nmiles long.\nAcross the river from Trail there\nis a town called East Trail. About\nSO families live there, and a general store lias been recently opened\nby O. Hicks.\nOn the Yukon river the body of\nTom Geoffry, the famous trapper\nwas recently found in a tent on a\nwood raft. He had evidently died\nfrom heart failure.\nIf rural merchants'knew how to\nadvertise, and would, the howl\nabout mail order houses getting\nbusiness would soon be no louder\nthan a frozen whisper.\nRobert Tillson of Hamilton,\nOntario, fell from the K. V.\nbridge at Ladner creek and was\nkilled early this month. He was\nto be married on the 22nd.\nCnrly Robinson was rnnning a\nrestaurant in Kaslo 23 years ago.\nHe made $40,000 in three months,\nbnt it cost htm $45,000 to make it,\na fact that caused Curly to go\nflewey in tbe spring of '93.\nIf J. L. Stamford, of the Pingree\nMining Co. wishes to sell stock Or\nmine around Nelson, or anywhere\nelse, he should fulfill the promises\nhe made years ago, and by which\nbe obtained money from those who\nhad faith in his word, note and\nhonor.\nDeath of Frawley\nAfter being a sufferer for nearly\n30 years from fibroid consumption,\nWilliam Frawley died last Saturday afternoon, at his residence on\nSilver street, from pneumonia. The\nfuneral  took place-Tuesday  forenoon,   under the auspices of  the\nEagles, and services were held in\nthe R. C. church.    Wm. Frawley\nwas  born  in   Rushville,   Illinois,\nMarch 14,  1863.    He. learned the\nbarber business early in life, and\nduring his  time    he   had shaved\nGeneral Phil Sheridan and   many\nother    prominent    men    of    the\nUnited States and  Canada.     He\nfollowed his trade in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles,  San  Francisco,\nVictoria,   Kamloops,\" Nelson  and\nother cities.    Finding the climate\nagreeable he settled in  Greenwood\nabout 17 years ago, .remaining until his demise.\nHe was a man of sterling character, and of iron nerve. Although in delicate health for over\na quarter of a century he was always cheerful, and bore his physical affliction with wonderful\npatience and bravery. He never\nwhined nor showed the white\nfeather. He was liberal in bis\nviews upon all questions, and a\nphilosopher of high degree. \" His\nword was as good as his bond, \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\nwhich is one of the greatest virtues in mankind. He was progressive and enterprising in his\nideas and deeds. He was an excellent citizen, a loving brother, '\nand a true friend. He is survived\nby his sister, Margaret, and in her\nsad bereavement she has tbe sympathy of the many friends who\nloved and admired the deceased for\nhis many noble and manly qualities.\nJack Lucy Dead\nJack Lucy cashed in and crossed\nthe great divide about six o'clock\nalst Friday evening. The summons came at the close of a very\njolly day for Jack. He was just\nstepping out of a Bleigh in front of\nthe National hotel when he was\nstricken by apoplexy. As he sank\nto the ground he exclaimed,\n\"Here's where I quit,\" and spoke\nno more. He was carried, intojbhe\nNational and died with a smile on\nhis face. When Dr. MacLean\narrived Jack was placed upon the.\nbilliard table and every effort made\nto revive him, but he could not\ncome back, and his body was taken\nto the morgue. And thus ended\none of tbe great optimists of the\nwest. The funeral will be held\nthis afternoon.\nJack Lucy was born near Cornwall, Ontario, on  Christmas Day,\n1857.    He drilled oil wells at Tar-\npot, Pa., in 1878, and then drifted\nwest to Montana.    Then he  went\nsouth and steamboated out of New\nOrleans.    In 1883 he was making\nties for the C.P.R.   at Shuswap\nlake.    In 1SS5  along with   Billy\nNoble he ran a saloon at Granite\nCreek.     From__their_ be_went   to-\nIdaho and ran the Senate saloon in\nWallace.    When the trouble broke\nout in the Coeur d' Alenesin 1892,\nJack joined the Irish Brigade and\nemigrated to  Kaslo.    He hit the\ndrill for the first time at the Noble\nFive mine,  and after the   silver\npanic of '93 took a look at Boss-\nland, coming to Greenwood about\n19 years ago.\nNature endowed   Jack  with   a\npowerful physique and   considerable mental  ability.    He bad his\nfaults,  but as he often said himself, \"Let's say nothing abont it.\"\nHe was of an extremely frank and\ngenerous nature, always  ready to\ngive his   last shirt to    a   needy\nfriend, or his last side of bacon to\na  hungry canine.    The power of\ngold  never touched his soul with\nits frosty mitt, and when Jack had\nmoney the world grew brighter for\nall  who  met him.    He   was   the\nmost cheerful and most optimistic\nman   that   ever   came   into   this\ncanyon, and it will be many a day,\nbefore   the   sound   of   his cheery\nlaugh dies in che memorr of those\nwho   knew   him. best.
