Mr. Miner is on\nhis annual tour of inspection, and\nwill spend several weeks in thc\nBoundary.\nCourt. Kettle River, No. 3575, Independent Order of Foresters, of\nGrand Forks, will hold their annual church parade on July 17th,\n1904. All members and visiting\nbrothers are requested to meet at the\nEO. 0. F. hall, First street, at\n10:30 a. *n., to march in a body to\nthe Episcopal churoh.\nRev. W. Irwin, of Vancouver, district deputy supreme chief ranger of\nthe Independent Orher of Foresters,\n'will be present at the church parade\nof that order in this city next Sunday, July 17th.\nProvincial Constable I. A. Dinsmore returned yesterday from New\nWestminster, to which place he had\ntaken Hugh Bell, who is unbalanced\nmentady. Bell was committed to\nthe New Westminster asylum about\na year ago from Somnose, Vancouver Island. His condition Boon improved, and he was released. Lately\nhe showed evidences of a return of\nthe old malady, add the authorities\ndecided that the best place for him\nwas in thc asylum, where he could\nreceive proper treatment.\nThe members of the Church of\nEngland held a most enjoyable picnic this week on the grounds surrounding Mrs. H. W. Young's residence in Columbia. A large number of people were present, and all\nhad a thoroughly good day's outing.\nSongs and music were indulged in,\nand a most tempting repast satisfied\nthe inner man. All present appreciated vory much the kindness of\nMrs. Young for allowing her premises to be used on this occasion.\nPeter Sienics, of Siemes & Shields,\nSt. Paul, who have the contract for\nthe buildiing of the smelter spur and\nPhoenix branch of the Great North-\nejn, arrived in Grand Forks last\nTuesday, and while hero inspected\nthe work now in progress all along\nthc line.\nAn event of more than ordinary\nimportance in the theatrical line is\nthe announcement of the appearance\nhore next Friday evening of one of\nAmerica's most famous actors, Mr.\nJohn Maguire, who will give a benefit to the Ladies' Aid society of tho\nPresbyterian church. Mr. Maguire\nwill givo his monologue entertainment, \"Begone Dull Caro,\" which\nbrought him both fame and fortune.\nThe eminent actor is enjoying his\nsecond summer's outing among the\nBritish Columbia lakes and mountains, an account of which will be\npublished during the ensuing\nmonths in Harper's Magazine.\nw\nAndrew Hackett, locator of the\nGrand Forks, Spokane and other\ngroups of coal claims in Southeast\nKootenay, is about to gain new fame\nin the Spokane courts. It is claimed\nthat nearly 850,500 havo been paid\nMr. Hackett by Spokane people and\nothers who wanted him to locate\nthem on Eust Kootenay coal lands.\nThe amount is specified in a suit\nbrought against Mr. Hackett by Edward Covell. The suit is brought to\ncompel the defendant to divide with\nthe plaintiff tho fees paid by the locators for their locations. The complaint alleges that in 1902 the two\nparties to the suit formed a copartnership to carry on a. business of lo-\ncoati.ig men on British Coliimbiu\ncoal lands, and that while they were\noperating together they located on\nsuch lands a large number of men,\nwhose names are set forth in the\ncomplaint. The charge for locating\nthe claims was 8150 each, and the\naggregate fees paid by the men\nwhose names arc given amounted,\nit is alleged, to #22,000. Later, and\nbefore the copartnership was dissolved, Mr. Hackett continued the\noperations, locating claims for a\nlarge number of other persons, whose\nnames the plaintiff does not know.\nThe complaint alleges that Mr.\nHackett collected the fees for this\nservice from the locators, but refused\nand still refuses to account for the\nsame or to share them with the\nplaintiff, hence the suit to compel\nhim to do so.\nProtests Against the Habitual\nDelays of Mail and Passenger Service.\nUrgent Need of a New Bridge\nAcross the Kettle River\nat This Point.\nAn interesting meeting of the\nGrand Forks board of trade was held\nin thc city offices Wednesday evening, a representative number of\nmembers being present.\nThe meeting was called for the\npurpose of obtaining thc board's\nsentiments respecting a communication drafted hy the president and\nsecretary to the Great Northern\nofficials, protesting against th'e delay in the arrival of the west-bound\npassenger train, which has now\ngrown to he of a regular daily occurrence. The discussion on this\nsubject was general, and brought\nout many interesting facts. It was\nshown that the delay was not wholly\n'the fault of the railway company,\nas the train was generally detained\nat Laurier for over an hour by the\nCanadian customs officer. No blame\nwas attached to this officer, however,\nas he is alone at that port, and the\ninflux of railway laborers at present\nmakes his duties quite arduous.\nThe opinion appeared to prevail that\nthere was more work in the customs\noffice at Laurier than one man could\nproperly perform. It was suggested\nthat the Dominion government be\npetitioned to improve tho service by\nplacing an inspector on the run between Marcus and Laurier.\nThe communication drafted by the\npresident and secretary was approved without a dissenting voice.\nThe mutter of urging the provin\ncial government to hasten the construction of the new bridge across\nthe Kettle river at this point was\nalso taken up. A grant of 85000 is\nneed for this purpose, and if it is not\nmade soon, there is every likelihood\nthat residents in the Ruckle addition\nwill shortly be compelled to swim\nwhen they desire to visit the city,\nas the old bridge is in a dangerous condition.\nm\nW. The\nAthelstan has high grade ore. The\nEmma and the Morrison have large\nbodies of highly desirable fluxing\nores, and jointly tho properties make\na most valuable consolidation. The\nmerger is capitalized at $7,500,000,\nunder thc name of the Boston &\nMontreal Consolidated, and is\nfinanced by New York capitalists\nclose to J. J. Hill. Cash guarantees\nand payments are up to ensure the\ndeal. Mr. Hill is now rushing the\nGreat Northern into the Boundary,\nand indications are that he has outgeneraled the Canadian Pacific for\nthe immense tonnage of this district. The\ngood faith of the syndicate is shown\nby the fact that it paid out $5000\nbefore development operations were\ncommenced, and up to the present\nabout $12,000 have been disbured.\nIn order to have retained the bond,\nthe syndicate would have had to pay\nout about $15,000 more on the 1st\nof July, and the showing on the\nproperty did not warrant so large\nan expenditure. The Michigan syndicate evidently does not feel very\nkindly towards a certain class in\nthis community, as a recent letter\nreceived from a member likened that\nelement to a \"flock of crows waiting\nfor earion.\" One thing appears to\nbe certain, viz., the suspension\nwork on the Volcanic lias given the\ndevelopment of the North Fork\ncountry a serious set-back, and the\nparties responsible for bringing\nabout this slate of affairs will not lie\nheld in very high esteem by the rest\nof the community.\nRev.
