\nQuand je dis, la musique est par son essence impuissante a exprimer quoique ce soit, j'entends par la qu'elle n'est pa un langage pareil a celui qui opere avec des mots, etant depourvue, elle, des qualites immanentes a ce dernier, proprietes par lesquelles un evenement, un sentiment, une attitude, un etat psichologique, un phenomene de la natue peut etre transmis (exprime, expose) et recu (compris). En somme, la musique n'exprime pas autre chose qu'elle meme. C'est elle qui est a la fois le sujet et l'objet de l'expression, son but et son moyen.
