During the\npast few weeks several prominent engineers and mining authorities have been\nvisiting the different camps and without\na single exception have gone away well\npleased with what they have seen. A\nnumber of the principal properties have\nbeen carefully examined and sampled,\nand assay results have exceeded expectations. The reports which'will be made\non the result of these examinations will\nreach some of the strongest financial\ncombinations who are interested in copper ores. The condition of the copper\nmarket at the present time is very satisfactory and the outlook for the future\nsupply and demand for the metal is\nbright enough to commend meritorious\ncopper properties to the capitalist looking\nfor investment in mines. The greatest\ndrawback a new district like the Similkameen country has to face, is the tendency\nof claim owners to greatly over-estimate\nthe probable value of their prospects (for\nthe value of prospects is only a problematical one) and to ask such a ridiculous\nprice as to at once stop any possibility of\nthe investor considering a deal. The\naverage prospector when asked the reason he values his property at such a\nhigh price, calls your attention to properties .which have sold for large sums in\nother camps. He forgets to compare the\nother\ntnpsi\n> theo\n:1th.\nof Mr.\ndicate that the time is not far distant\nwhen they will be realized in all their\nfulness. It would seem that instead of\n\"hop,\" Mr. Manley was using a clearer\nand farther seeing pair of spectacles than\nis now predicting a railway from Grand\nForks to Republic\u2014and he is still wearing those same spectacles.\u2014Grand Forks\ncisted in tin\nThe conditions \t\nBoundary country a few years ago are\nbeing duplicated in this part of the country at the present time. There are a\nnumber of individuals in the Similkameen who seem to be supplied with the\nsame far-seeing spectacles which adorned\nMr. Manley of Grand Forks, and which\nwe are too apt to set down to a disordered brain or to a \"particular brand of\nhop.'' Some of these have even dared, to\npicture the future of the Similkameen on\npaper, and while this may seem absurd to\nsome who have never investigated its\nprospects, those who have, give never a\nword of dissent, as they know too well\nthat all we need is grit and capital to\nmake these glimpses into the future a\nreality. Any relaxation of that often\ntimes valuable commodity, \"gall,\"\ncoupled with the more serviceable ones\nof push, grit and hope, will only place\nus that much farther back in the ever increasing class of \"mining districts.\"\nTherefore it behooves us to put on a pair\nof those far-seeing spectacles and wake\nup to the realization that we have far\nbetter prospects than those which existed\nits growth, and that we are bound in the\nno distant future to receive a similar reward to that which is now being bestowed upon the Boundary country.\n camp may\nhave exceptional shipping and smelting\nfacilities, and best of all may have a\ndividend payer amongst its mines. When\nthat happy condition of affairs is reached\nin the Similkameen district, it will be an\neasy matter to induce capital to invest in\nthe mines, but until it is demonstrated\nthat the ore retains its values with depth,\nthe investor is taking such chances that\nhe cannot be expected to pay fancy\nprices for prospects which have nothing\nto commend them beyond a mere surface\nshowing. The surest method of inducing\ncapital to invest m the mines of the\nSimilkameen is to offer claims on good\nworking bonds at reasonable prices.\nWork, and lots of it, is the life of any\nnew mining camp, and a few working\nmines will do more to attract attention\nthan all the reports of rich strikes and\nhigh assays that can be published.\n5 EDITORIAL COMMENT. <\nMr. Denis Murphy, M.
