B.C.
The Revival of Morris Dancing
Children in England are learning
the old-fashioned morris dances and
their elders look on with delight. In
the large cities of the United States
the folk dances of the countries of
the old world are being taught the
children of the schools in the poorer
districts. This revival of dancing is
looked upon as an excellent sign of
he times by many observers.
The dance is glorified movement as
poetry is glorified speech. Only, of
course, in the greatest dancers is this
mastery complete; but the ordinary
child can learn a great deal of the art
of bodily expression, enough at least
to play his part in the dance as a player
of ordinary powers can play his part
in a band, indeed, the art of dancing
is e idently far easier han the art of
j music, since children can be quickly
I trained so that their dancing will give
I the most exquisite pleasure to onlookers,
I so that while they dance they seem to
I live and move and have their being in a
golden age of common and innocent
delight. To see then dancing thus is
to undergo a very strange und moving
experience. For as they take to the
dance wiih an eagerness that proves
they have some inherited desire and
aptitude for it, so the sight of them
dancing stir the onlooker to a delight
which appears so familiar that there
must be some kind of inherited memory
in it. They recall to him a past which
he has never known, they speak a
language which he has never heard yet
understands as soon as he hears it.
Causes of Long Life
A hereditary tendency to long life.
A moderation approaching asceticism
in eating and drinking.
A serene disposition.
Congenial work, and abundance of it.
Ability to see the playful side of
life"the sense of humor," as it is
called.
Daily open-air exercise; preferably
walking or wood chopping.
Sound sleep every night, six to eight
hours.
Recuperative power.
It will be noted that neither health
nor wealth is included in this summing up. In point of fact, many centenarians have had periods of Invalid-
I ism, the result of apparently chronic
\\ or obviously acute disease. An Am-
; erican centenarian, Miss Yardley, who
died in Chicago some years ago ut the
i mellow age of one hundred and five,
j hud been given but six months to live
when her physicians declared her n-
curable at eighteen. The veteran American humorist, Donald G. Mitchell
("Ik Marvel"), was also "a hoprle.is
case" before he reached twenty. In
these and in other cases the hinth cause
of longevity, "recuperative power," waa
most strongly marked. Indeed, insurance experts, espec.ally in England,
are inclined to place the ability to recuperate as the first desirable qualifi-
j cation for a long-life "risk."
If absolute health is not a condition
of longevity, great wealth is still less
so. Most of the centenarians have
been poor, or but moderately provided
with worldly goods. The few who
had command of money lived frugally,
avoiding all the grossness, all the excitement, all the fatigu- and ull th extravagances which shorten the lives of
so many rich people.
TWO NEW RECIPES
Mush Muffins
Two cupfuls of warm cornmeal mush,
two cupfuls of milk, two tablespoon uls
of sugar, two tablespoonfuls of melted
butter, and sufficient flour to muke a
drop batter. This should be done after a thorough sweeping.
An excellent way to remove a spot
from a dark woollen skirt, is to rub it
hard wi h a piece of soft old linen. Feb. 21, 1911. JOHN Mcl.EOD
I'ub. Fsli.23. Clsrence McDowell, Agenl
General and minor matter! in relation
to tlie strike from tlie principal subjects
of discussion at the P. R. I. A. meeting
last nif-ht in their hall on Third avenue.
The* general feeling of tbe meeting wm
expressed by a speaker who said hat
the workers felt that the responsibility
for the strike lay entirely with the
contractors who still held out Bgai st
the 45 cent rate. The workers woultl
be surprised if the community of Prince
Rupert favored the com nuance of the
difficulty, and wished to see the improvement work in thc city to remain
at a standstill just to suit the pockets
of two or three contractors who were
not in business for their health.
Not Angry Wi;h Council
No kick comes to the city council
from the P. R. I. A. at present. The
workers' war is all against the contractors. It will be found that the
strongest resistance to the increase
comes from the English-speaking contractors concerned. Today, in fact,
Lackovitch's gang resumed operations
on Third avenue near Fifth street and
an understanding exists that Louis
Vuckavitch will start hia men up at
the 45 cent rate tomorrow. There is
a strong probability thai M. Gurvitch
will follow suit. Mclnnis & Kelly,
. P. McMordie, and S. H. Watson
hold out, and remark that it is easy-
fur the non-English speaking contractors
to come through with the raise as they
work in the cuts with their gangs more
or less, and share and share with the
men.
The Strikers' Argument
The strikers maintain lhat whether
they gain the increase or not, the contractors stand to lose by their resistance
to it. If they try to break the strike
with m|-orled abor, say the men. they
will have to use inexperienced rockmen
and laborers of thc Vancouver "out
of work" class, clerks out of jobs, and
"down and outs." "We have good
men, trained rockmen and miners in
our ranks," :<ay the strikers, "and such
men cannot be brought in here for less
than $3.50 a day. Only a poor class of
men will scab on their fellow-workers."
Want Council to Break Contracta
An idea which comes in for quite a
lot of approval among the workers is
that the city should arrange to pay off
the contractors for the work already
done, and have the work completed
by the men on strike at the city wage
rate of 45 cents an hour The men
declare that they could put on two
shi ts if necessary, and do the grading
bet er and quicker than it is being done
now as they have the best rockmen
in their ranks.
No Newcomera Expected
It is not anticipated by the P. R. I. A.
that any more labor will be invited here
from the south. "But if it comes, we
are ready with a welcome for it like the
last," they say. As a matter of fact,
R. A. McMordie remarked this morning
that it was not the intention to bring
in any more labor to be absorbed by
the strikers. From the contract rs'
point of view, hc said that the effect
of thc strike was trilling. The work
is of a nature to lie idle unharmed.
Only the interest on capital outlay or
plant is being lost. As for the $26 per
day penalty clause for delay over the
time limit, Mr. McMordie is of the
opinion that this is not likely lo be
enforced. The time limit is liable to
be extended to compensate for delay
occasion d by city operations on the
contract area.
TO REPRESS
SOCIAL EVIL
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Advertising Dance
Don't forget the Hard Time and
Masquerade Ball on Wednesday night
in the Mclntyre Hall. Mr. Goodman says hc was not summoned to court,
either as a principal, or even as a witness.
He was not present at the time thc
police entered his house. W. Patmore expounded the law of
the Dominion on the subject showing
that it is comprehensive and leaves no
loophole for the offender male or female
to escape the punish ments of the Law.
"But," said Mr. Patmore, "the police
and magisterial system of any community is but the mirror of that community's moral sense." Therefore in
certain places, chiefly in Western Canada,
the segregation of vice is allowed. From
the historical point of view Mr. Patmore
spoke showing that the social evil has
baflltd various systems of dealing with
it. In Paris the home of the segregation
system the evil extends beyond its
segregation limits to nearly thrice the
extent of its roll within them. -Mr.
Patmore emphasised the importance
of keeping this evil well confined and
controlled. "Young girls," he said,
"seeing these women at concerts and
public assemblies, hearing their laughter,
seeing their jewels and line dresses are
apt to be led away to think lightly of
the life these women lead. They do
not know of the bitterness and degradation of the life. Whatever we do, and
I do not speak on the subject as a
dogmatist in any sense, we must insist
lhat if these women, if tolerated are
kept off our streets and away from our
public assemblies."
Bishop Du Vernet's brief but eloquent
appeal to the moral and spiritual sense
of his hearers closed the meeting wilh a
strong note of contidence in the ultimate
triumph of purity and goodness through
education and legislation under the
power of God.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooj
Canadian Gtneral Electric Co.
