A review of this vote as the figures actually stand is educational and inspiring, it proves that from the northern houndary of California to the
Mexican line 800 miles away, Cali-
forniana were willing and eager to
back their advocacy of San Francisco
with hard cash. The tremendous favorable vote is all the more gratifying
to Californians because of the fact
that the state is divided geographically into five distinct sections, but by
sentiment in this contest for the exposition the state is united.
In San Francisco a large majority
would lie expected, and it is no surprise to learn that the vote there
went 20 to 1 for the tax. Tlie totals
show that 42,378 votes were polled for
the measure, and but 2463 against it.
Across the hay from San Francisco,
in the region so closely connected
with it commercially and socially, an
overwhelming favorable vote was registered also. Alameda county, in
wliich are the cities of Oakland. Alameda and Berkeley, return tlieir verdict by casting 18,o;i7 votes for the
proposition to tax themselves for San
Francisco, and 1683 votes against it.
Sacramento, the capital of the state,
located in the heart cf the Sacramento Valley, and distinctly an interior
town, voted 5821 to tax itself for the
world show at San Francisco, and
only 1346 against it. San Mateo, on
the peninsula near San Francisco,
voted 3201 for, and hut 112 against
the state tax. Shasta, in tl e heart
of the northern mountains, 200 miles
away from San Francisco, cast 1341
votes for the measure, and only 544
against it. Humboldt, another far
northern county, went better than .'.'
to 1 for the proposition; Placer, one
of the famous placer mining counties
of pioneer days, cast 1387 for, and but
407 vctes against it.
That is a wonderful showing, unprecedented in any state. It is the
result presented in plain figures, not
glossed over in general terms.
Should Louisiana bring forward her
vote for the bond proposition in the
southern state, it could be shown how
far behind this recoru she falls. The
Southerners have never presented
their record over the state.
But now as to tlie southern part of
California. Los Angeles anl San
Diegohow d*d their votes run? It.
was freely predicted that Southern
California, 500 miles away from San
Francisco, would never give a favorable vote to a proposition wliich meant
that the district should carry its
heavy part of a state tax to help San
Francisco in her exposition fight.
Yet Los Angeles went better than
2 to 1 for the tax. In that metropolis of the Southland, 21,995 votes were
cast for the ta-, : nd 10,899 against, it.
in San D;ego, Wilch is far below Los
Angeles, all but snug against the Mexican line, 383(1 votes went for the tax,
and only 1690 against it. Even In
sparsely settled Mono county, which
stretches along the Nevada line far
to the south, 120 votes were polled for
the tax, and but thirty-eight against
it. Fresno returned a favorable vote
of 4469, and an opposing vote of but
155H. Monterey county went 2051
votes for the tax, and 422 against it.
So much for the state tax of $5,000,-
000 for the exposition. It passed by
an overwhelming vote, and Louisiana
can not show anything approaching
tbe unanimity displayed in California.
In Southern California the tax passed
better than 2 to 1. The total state
vote sent it through 10 to 1.
November 15 the city of San Francisco again went to the polls, this
time to vote on the proposition to
bond the municipality for $5,000,000
for the exposition. The bond issue
passed by a vote of 42,040 to 2122.
Again 20 to 1.
As a record of city and state spirit
California is inclined to point with
pride to this tremendous vote. Ir is
the largest favorable vote that any
amontlement presented to the city or
state ever received.
It. explains how California has been
able to raise $17,500,000 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1:115.
KANGAROO STEAKS.
Immense Quantities of the Meat
ported to England.
8:30-
.'0:00-
15:45-
15:41
IT PAYS TO ADVERTI8E
 IN
THE DAILY NEW8.
London, Dec. 8.The historic
butcher of Punch, who retorted upon
the grumbling housewife that, evidently what she wanted was a "new
animal" should have lived until today.
