There\nIe still room in the world for both\nthe poetic drama and the cinema.\nThe movies reflect after the manner of a mirror. The\nindustries hardest bit are shipbuilding with 28 per cent of unemployment' in the first week of December\niron and Bteel 23 per cent and cotton\n15 per cent. There Is improvement\nover a year ago, but It seems obvious\nthat taking in the second half of the\nunemployment slack will be difficult.\nOf emergency measures road building comes first, supplemented ' by\nland drainage and afforestation. These\nnnd similar public undertakings have\nbeen largeely carried on by the local\nauthorities with parliamentary subventions. Permanent remedial measures have been directed to the revival of trade. Ramsay McDonald\ndeclared nearly a year ago that tho\n\u25a0Urest way to combating unemployment was to stimulate industry, and\non that ground a Labor-Socialist\nprime minister heartily Indorsed the\nTrade Facilities act. Prime Minister\nBaldwin recently Informed the house\nof commons of what has been done\nnot only to revive the standard Industries but to create new ones. The\nerection of sugar beet factories has\nbeen going on at a rapid rate. Progress has also been made in the\nchemical Industry and the manufacture of scientific instruments. Final\nly there is Hie elaborate housing\nprogram, which has made the building trades the most prosperous class\nof labor. Our grandmothers hung\npictures of fruit and of dead fowl\n(!) on their walls, and kept filled\nvinegar cruets and salt nnd pepper\nshakers on their buffet or serving\ntable constantly. But the ideal dining room of today lacks this food-\nsuggest iveness. I am going to de-\ncribe a dining room recently furnished by a prominent interior decorator;\nA large brown rug covered tho\nfloor, leaving two feet of polished\nwood border showing around it. Tho\nwalls were covered with an ecru\nsatin stripe paper. Tho furniture of\nAmerican walnut consisted of a round\npedestal table, six chairs, and a\nsmall serving table. Tho room had\nan open fireplace which was cheerfully outfitted with brass andirons,\nbrass wood box (antique) and a\nstand holding the customary brass\nshovel, poker and tongs. A small column-like stand ln one corner of the\nroom supported a gold fish globe, a\npretty sight in tho brown color\nscheme. On tho walls were a few\nmarine paintings.\nBut the most singular note in the\nroom was the comparative bareness of\nbuffet, dining table and serving table.\nIndeed the serving table was totally\nbare, save for a runner of ecru linen\nfilet, A similar runner covered the\ntop of the buffet and tho only\nornaments on this piece of furniture\nwero two old-fashioned urns standing\n12 inches high, with a Rmiill glass\ncover; these were placed on either\nend of the buffet. On the dining\ntable was a 14-inch wide runner of\nbrown tapestry edged with gilt braid.\nUpon this, In (he center of the table,\nstood a small round jar or gold-\nbanded white glass, with cover to\nmatch the two buffet urns. There\nwas nothing inside the urns or this\nsmall jar.\nWhen I stood in the doorway of this\ndining room I was immediately impressed by Its restfulness. There was\na distinctly refined note about it.\n\"Here is a room.\" I said to myself,\n\"which Is purely utilitarian. At\nmealtime it is used; between meals\nIt Is sensibly bare. Yet it haB 'tone' \"\nI liked It and wondered whether\nother housewives would not welcome\nthis hint from the up-to-date Interior decorators nnd remove candlesticks, fruit bowl, and vases from\ntheir dining rooms?
