McMORRIS Manager\nPREMIER M'BRIDE'S VISIT\nThere has been a change in regard\nto the visit of premier McBrlde and\nHon. 'i nomas Taylor, minister of public\nworks, which will mean that they will\nbe the guests of the Canadian club on\nWednesday at noon and ln the afternoon will speak at the picnic In their\nhonor to be held at Procter.\nThe Canadian club luncheon will give\ntlie members of that organization un\nopportunity to meet the premier of the\nprovince ami one of his ministers on\nnon-partisan ground. As Canddlana\nthey will have un opportunity to- do\nhonor to two feLlow Canadians who\nhave achieved distinction. Needless to\nsay there will*- not be anything what)\never of a partisan nature in the premier's address nor in anything Mr. Taylor may say on t..is occasion. It will\nsimply be one of tnose occasions which\nare all to rare in this country when\npublic men may meet tue representative men of the country on common\nground, that of a broad Canadlanism.\nThe picnic in live afternoon, on the\notner hand, is being organized by Mr:\nMcBrlde's supporters in Nelson nnd\nvlclittty, Thlis, however, does not\nmean that It is to be confined to members of tne conservative party. All who\ncare to attend will ibe made welcome\nand can be certain of a pleasant outing.\nThis picnic wl.l not only afford the conservatives of the city and vicinity an\nopportunity to honor their leader but\nwill also give the Independent man who\nwants to judge men and issues for himself, as wet] as any who are identified\nwith the liberal party, but who may be\nsufficiently interested to attend, a\nchance of meeting tbe premier and his\nminister of pub.lc works us well as'\n\u25a0...ess***, Goodeve and Burrell, representatives at Ottawa respectively of Kootenay and Yale-Cariboo, and of hearing\nall of them discuss the questions of the\nday as they view them. This picnic is\nnot ln any sense of the word u cam\npalgn meeting, but is simply a case\nwhere Mr. McBrlde's local supporters\nhave taken advantage of his visit to\nthe city with Hon. ,Mr. Taylor on a tour\nof inspection to anange a reception In\nbis honor that will] be worthy of Nelson. Tnose in charge, therefore, have\nevery justification for asking the public generally to at-.end amid help make\nthe day the success It should be. Of\nthe public's response mere should be\nno question.\nQUESTION OF ADVERTISING\nIt is gratifying to be able to state\nthat the committee appointed by the\nboard of trade to consider the question\not properly advertising the city and -district la hard at work and has already\nmade good progress. While all the\nsecured, nor all the details of the\nsoaeme proposed worked out the matter has been so far advanced that suc-\ncesss is assured. This Is a good thing\nfor Nelson and tor the adojlning district.\n.-aturally the real estate men have\ntaken an active part hi the Initial work\nof the committee and have also generously responded with funds, but the\nbusiness men of the city generally, the\ncity council and those interested in\nmining should also contribute. There\ncan be no question as to the necessity\nfor advertising if the country is to be\ndeveloped as it should be. The question is who shouid pay for it? There\nare some who have not properly considered tbe matter who say that the\nreal estate men should as they get the\nbenefit, -.-.as is not a correct statement of the situation. It Is quite true\nreal estate men get the first benefit,\nbut this extends only to the amount\nof their commission or proilt on tha\nsale of land to the newcomer. It\nshould not be forgotten that every\nnew settler in this district means so\nmuch more business for the merchants\nof Nelson and a corresponding amount\nof benefit to the city as a whole. Any\ntemporary prorit that the reai estate\n-men may get from the influx of new\nsettlers is, therefore, more than met\nby the result to the merchants of the\ncommunity as a whole.\nJtut the intention is not to advertise only tbe country's possibilities in\nfruit growing and agriculture generally, but the city s advantages as an\ninuustrlal and distributing center will\nalso be made known. Mining should\nand will also receive its share of attention. It Ls not necessary to go into\nthe benefit to every resident of Nelson\nthat would follow tne location of additional industries and distributing warehouses here, but it may not be out of\nplace to point out that every new institution of this kind Increases the\ncity's revenue from its power plant hy\nso much per year. The city at presenft\nhas a large amount of surplus power\n.Ji* sale and will have more and thun\nstands to benefit largely from any\nbeneficial result of advertising the\ncity's advantages in this respect, for\nthe cost of operating the power plant\nremains Uie same whether the city is\nselling all its current or only part of\nIt. As a business proposition the city\nshould assist any advertising scheme\nthat is likely to bring additional customers for its ]>ower' plant, to say nothing of other reasons why It should\ndo so.\nThe mining of this district, most\npeople who know anything about the\nmatter will agree, is not getting the\npublicity In the outside world that it\ndeserves, Particularly is this so of\nSheep creek. But if this camp and\nmining generally are to be advertised\nas they should be those Interested in\nthe industry should do their share toward toward meeting the cost of the\nnecessary publicity work. \u25a0\nIf this advertising campaign Is to\nhe the success it should be there miiBt\n>be co-operation among all the interests arfected. The real eBtate men\ncannot be expected to pay all tho costs\nof advertising the fruit lands of this\nto manufactures and wholesalers and\nas a place of residence and the possibilities of mining here. Neither\nwould It be right to ask either (he-\nmerchants or the city, the city itself\nor the mining men to provide all tha\ncost, but If each of the interests affected does Its par,t there need be no\nfear of tbe result. It will be greater\nthan the most sanguine looks for.\nEDITORIAL NOTES\nIt is to be hoped mat the report of\nits expert will result in the dominion\ngovernment establishing a system, of\nrural telepnones in this district. It\nhas auohi a system in the Okangan and\nother parts of the province and there\nis no reason why it should not have\none. in ,U_ Kootenay. The ranchers of\nthe district are entitled to as much\nconsideration as those of other parts.\n'the C.f.R. and Dominion Express\ncompany annojfpe the completion of\ntheir plans fd|phe handling of fruit\nalong Kootenay lake this year. If these\nare successful as it is hoped they will\nprove, it' will mean another big step\nforward in development of the fruit\ngrowing industry.\nRneumatlsm.\nMore than nine out of every ten cases of\nrheumatism are simply rheumatism of the\nmuscles, due to cold or damp weather or\nchronic rheumatism.
