He came to Manitoba 29 years\nago.\nThe railway commissioners have completed arrangements for their tour of\nthe west; they expect to be in Vancouver on August 31.\nIt is announced that Judge Walker,\nsenior county court judge for some\nyears will succeed the late Police Magistrate Daly of Winnipeg.\nIt is reported that Sir Lomer Gouin,\nPremier of Quebec will shortly wed\nMiss Alice Amos, daughter of Mrs. 1..\nH. Amos of Montreal. The bride to be\nis now in Paris.\nThe construction of a national home\nand sanitarium at the Woodmen's\nSprings, near Gloster, Miss., by the\nWoodmen of the World will be undertaken immediately.\nThe Mt. Andrew's Copper mine on\nPrince of Wales Island, near Stewart,\nhas recently been acquired by a London\ncompany for $2,500,000. Their experts\nare reported to be on the ground.\nA very creditable voyage has been\nmade by three British submarines, they\nleft Portsmouth on February 8, and\narrived safely at Honkong on April 20,\nafter a voyage of 9000 miles.\nTo add to the triumphs of the coronation, the King scored a big turf victory when his three-year-old, Dorando,\nwon the Bottisham plate from a field\nof six. Dorando was a favorite at 2\ntol.\nThe bridge over Salt river at Phoenix\nArizona, the largest concrete structure\nof its kind in the world, was opened\nlast Friday. The bridge proper is 2,150\nfeet in length, while with the approach\nes it measures 4,600 feet.\nRussia's first dreadnought, the Se-\nbastopol, was launched on Thursday\nfrom the Baltic works in the presence\nof a large official gathering. The ship\nwas laid down on June 16, 1909, and it\nis said that another year will be occupied in equipping her.\nThree aeroplanes, costing$13,000 and\nrepresenting the latest development\nin aeronautics, will be delivered this\nweek to the U.S. naval academy. The\nmachines are of the Curtis type and\nit is reported will form the foundation\nof Uncle Sam's aerial navy.\nArchie lishop won the British Colum-\ni bia championship and the high average\ncompetition in the annual tournament\nof the Revelstoke Gun club last week.\nHarry Cramer was second. Bark-\nley, the high professional, was the only\nman to lead I'ishop.\nFigures completed by the customs\ndepartment for the year show that settlers' effects to the total value of\n$14,072, 611 were brought into Canada,\nthe largest property of the largest immigration in anadian history. The\namount exceeds the total for the previous year by nearly four millions.\nThe Provincial government has appointed a board of censors, whose duty\nit will be to prevent the exhibition in\nOntario of any suggestive, immoral or\nobscene pictures or pictures of crime or\nprize fights. All films displayed in the\nprovince must bear the approval stamp\nof the board.\nThe contract for the construction of\nthe Hope-Kamloops division of the\nC. N. railway has been awarded to the\nNorthern Construction Company and\nMessrs. Foley, Welsh and Stewart.\nThe various sub-contracts have been\nlet and work will start in the near future.\nDr Alexander Ouimet, of Hull,\ncharged with the murder of Mrs. Ethel\nMary Spain by performing a criminal\noperation, was acquitted by Magistrate\nGoyette at Ottawa, last Thursday.\nAfter considering the crown's evidence\nfor three days, the magistrate decided\nit was not sufficient to send Ouimet for\ntrial.\nThe first successful cross country monoplane flight ever made by a woman\nflying alone, stands to the credit of Mrs\nJames B. Martin, wife of the Harvard\naviator. In an eighteen minute flight\nlast Thursday she flew over Waltham,\nWatertown. Waverley and Belmont.\nShe performed her evolutions with the\nsame speed and daring that have marked the flights of her husband and she\nmade a perfect landing.\nOn Friday of last week Dr.\nSanson of Ashcroft, was called\nto Clinton to hold an inquest\nover the body of a white man\nfound a short distance from the\nlatter town with his head battered in. When last seen the\nman was in company with a Si-\nwash, who is alleged to have\ncommitted the murder, and is\nnow in the custody of the police.\nMagistrate Saul left Lillooet on\nThursday for Clinton to try the\ncase.\nThe chief real estate deal put\nthrough this week was the property of Jong Kee. which was\nbought by Wo Hing for the sum\nof $1200. Jong has pulled down\nthe old \"dobe\" adjoining this\nproperty and is erecting a frame\nbuilding in its stead, which\nmakes a decided improvement.\nW. T.
