A great many\nsupporters of the bill deplored its\nprospective effects on American in-\ntoresti, yet so intent were thoy on\nvengeance for imaginary wrongs that,\ncome what would, they aro determined to try and force Canada either\nto concede all iti fishery privileges\nor compel it to sue for annexation,\nbelieving that England would rather\nconsent to the forced nuptials than\nrisk a fratricidal war. Through all\nthii discussion, both in and outside\nof the American congress, brother\nJonathan lias lost nothing of his\nwonted brag and bluster. One valiant Minnesotian, in congress, makes\nvery short work of Canada. A\nMichioancfo. also talks very big\nabout annexing the Dominion. And\nIreland is soon to become a sister\nrepublic in the event of war, according to these fire-eaten. Of course\nthere are aome sensible men who\ndon't make fools of themselves in\nthat way, but all seem to vie with\neach other in their desire to make a\nlittle capital out of this fish business\nat thil particular periodic revolution\nin their spoils system of government.\nIt is to be deplored that even some\nof our otherwise sober Kanuck\nfriends in the eastern provinces are\nindulging in the like foolish bravado.\nA little blood-letting would have a\nwonderfully soothing effect on these\nbellicose gentry. Many a tierce battle has been fought over a good\nstrong bowl of toddy. The eiTect of\nall this windy strategy between the\ntwo rival parties in the United\nStates over the presidential election\nmight be very harmless after tho\npolitical contest is over for the time\nbeing, but in the meantime its effect\non the Dominion of Oannda may not\nbe so easily quieted. Party politics\nin the United States has been the\nchief originating cause of nearly all\nthe troubles between England and\nthe republic since its existence; and\nfrom the relative position of Canada\nwith tbe United States the samo\ncause will be likely to produce the\ntame effects continually; so that the\noutlook for peace between the Dominion and Uncle Sam so long us\nthey are under two distinct govern\nmenta is not very promising. It becomes a question of great importance whether a union or a continual\nirritation with our neighbors would\nbe tbe lesser evil. It is a terrible trial\nto live beside a troublesome neighbor; but it would perhaps be n worso\ntrial to be obliged to submit to an\nalliance with such a neighbor, when\nevery fourth year there would necessarily be a political revolution with\nall its accompanying hate and lying\nslanders and devilish chicanery. Our\nown political system has abuses\nenough, but stark republicanism,\nwhere moral prinoiple is lacking, is\nfar wone.\nthe first of which they receive $7 a\nmonth, and in the second $12. The '\npay of a trained nurse is from twenty to thirty dollars a week.\" The\nprofession of nursing, it is said, is\nsteadily gaining in favor as nn occupation for women, and so anxious\nare many women to gain the benefits\nof the school that they offer to serve\nwithout pay, or even, in some instances, are willing to pay a fee of\nfrom twentydive to one hundred\ndollars for the privilege of entering\nthe school. These offers are always\ndeclined; all are put on an equality,\nmust begin iu the lowest ranks of a\nward, do the inferior work, and can\nonly expect to riso to higher positions when they show themselves\ncapable of filling them. Dr. W. T.\nLusk, in his address to the graduating class in 1886, speaking of the\nhigh death rate that prevailed in\ntho hospital in 1873 and previously,\nand referring to tho striking amendment in this respect, said: \"Tho improvements referred to I unhesitatingly attribute to the trained nurses,\" and he continued, more directly addressing the olass: \"I extend\nto you on the part of tho profession\nof which I am n humble member a\nhearty welcome.
