The Wellington\ncompany, Mr. Boyco stated, hud refused\nto reduce as other mining companies\nhad done, hours of labor from 9. _ to 8\nhours. This refusal, it is said, is arbitrary, as the minors are paid 75 cents\nper ton for all coal they mine. \"The\nminers,\" Boyce said, \"were refused as a\nbody, an audience by (the mining com-\npany management; as the miners were\nin a groat number of cases poor, they\nwere driven to desperate straits by being forced to trade at the Wellington\ncompany's stores, which chargcd^irom\n50 to 75 per cent, more than other stores.\nThe miners' homes were in the majority\nof cases mere hovels, but Hie condition\nol the miners was made even worse by\ntheir being evicted from these by the\ncompany.\" Ovor 700 minors uro locked\nout and there is no prospect of a speedy\nsettlement.
