C, September\n18.\u2014The annual meeting of the\nCanadian Forestry Convention\nwill open here this afternoon\nwith a large attendance of dole-\ngales representing every part of\nlhe Dominion. This is the lirst\ntime that the annual Forestry\nConvention is held outside of lhe\nProvince of Ontario or Quebec.\nMany prominent officials of the\nCanadian Governmenl are in at-\ntendance und a highly interesting programs has been prepared\nlor the convention. Governor\nGeneral Earl Grey and Premier\nSir Wilfrid Laurier had been invited lo attend Ihe convention,\nbut where unable lo make a definite promise. Many matters\nof great importance to the\nforestry interests of the Dominion will come up for consideration and discussion.\nKeep Your Eyes on Sullivan.\nSlocks of the Sullivan Mining\nCo. are soaring upward. Last\nweek they were quoted ut Scents\nthis week al 17 cents. A meeting of the directors and shareholders will be held in Spokane\nSeptember 20th. Bill Evans, a\ncurb stone broker from Spokane\nwus at the mine lasl week sizing\nup tho properly. Manager B.\nClendenning also went lo the\nmine, and on Thursday Senator\nGeorge Turner, president of the\ncompany, accompanied by G, W,\nShields visited the property. It\nis rumored that a tight is on for\nthe control of the mine between\nthe Sweeney, or rather the Federal Mining Co.. who has secured\nthe Sweeney interests, and\nparties represented by Senator\nTurner and eastern stockholders\nSenator Turner nnd (I, W,\nShields returned from an inspection of the Sullivan mine Friday. In conversation, Mr.\nShields expressed much surprise at the extent of the ore\nbody exposed in Ihe mine, and\nsaid that it was one of the best\nmining propositions in the\ncountry. While In Cranbrook\nMr. Shields endeavored to secure\na large block of Sullivan stock\nat 15 cents.\nDELAY WAS DISASTROUS\nPay Day at St. Eugene.\nThe St Eugene Mining Co.,\nat Moyie, on Monday paid out\n888.000, the largest monthly payment ever made in the history of\nof the mine. He is kept\npretty busy these days with his\nlarge Cranbrook contracts and\nbusiness in town, which makes\nhim Hit back and forth between\nthe two places,\nCranbrook and Nelson lacrosse\nteams are talking ut each other\nthrough the papers about playing a match game, and It is very\nprobable that a game will bo arranged, to be played during the\nNelson fair.\nMayor Rogors, of Cranbrook,\nwent east with Division Superintendent Krickson in his private\ncar, attached to yesterday's local,\nMayor Rogers is quite busy just\nnow looking after the arranging\nfor the building to bo erected by\ntho City of Cranbrook jointly\nwith Lhe provincial government\nbuilding, but the team don't pull\neven, and delay is the result.\nExplosion at Moyie.\nOn Monday night about 10\no'clock the outbuilding containing the gas plant of the Kooteuay\nHotel, at Moyie was shattered\nby nn explosion, whicli broke\nseveral windows iu the hotel,\nalso in the residence of Mr. .1.1).\nElmer. The porter went into the\nbuilding wilh a lighted cigar iu\nhis mouth, and there happened\nto be a leak where the gas was escaping. The building was\nstrongly constructed, and Hie explosion was qnito heavy and\nfelt all over town. The porter\nwas injured   but  not seriously.\nEngineer Rose Purposed Quitting\nLife on Railway   for   Farm\nNear Nelson Next Spring.\nJ. E. Annable received letters\nfrom Medicine Hat last night\nwhich add a pathetic chapter to\nthe story of the freight wreck-\nnear Dunmore Junction on the\nmorning of Saturday, September I, says the Nelson Canadian,\nOn lhe 21th of June last two\nmen enteral M. Annable's office\nand Inquired about fruit lands.\nThey had seen a lot already but\nnothing that exactly suited. Mr.\nAmiable made an engagement\nwith them lo meet the 8 o'clock-\ntrain with him the next morning\nand visit land near Thrums belonging to W. Gibson.\nTho trip was made and the\nvisitors were satistied. Mr.\nOliver left for home that night,\nMr. Rose remaining to complete\na deal. He explained to Mr.\nAnnable that he was a C. P. R\nengineer running out of medicine\nHal. Mr. Oliver was also in\nthe employ ol the railway company at Cranbrook. Oliver was\nRose's wife's brother.\nOn account of the uncertainty\nand peril of railway life they\nhad decided to take up land and\nturn farmers.\nThe property was hold at\n\u00a32500, but after some negotiation\nMr. Gibson agreed to accept\n$210o, a small payment down,\n#1000 on September 1, and the\nbalance in a your. The bargain\nwas struck: Mr. Rose arranged\nfor seed for next spring and returned to duty at Medicine Hat.\nThe letters received by Mr.\nAnnable informed him that his\ntwo clients were killed in the\ncollision at Dunmore a week ago\nlast Saturday in a fatality of the\nsame character as those that\nhad turned his thoughts to the\nland.\nMrs. Rose, who lost at one\nstroke her husband and brother,\nand has no living relations, asks\nto be released from the purchase\ncontract. Mr. Hickling said one of the chief reasons\nfor the lack of attention is the\nlimited number of mines quoted\nonthe London market.
