The leaders of\nthe pnrty have also shown thnt the\ndefeat wuh nut expected. Time and\nagain during the last session Liberal\nmembers in the House of Commons\ndemanded an election boa_t)ng that\nthe Province of Quebec would teach\nthe Government that Quebec was Htiil\nsolid for Laurier. The first by-election has taken place in a constituency two-thirds of French Canadian\npopulation and the answer to the\nLiberal boastings has come clear nnd\ndefinato that the Borden policy of\ngood government in the interests of\nthe people of all sections of the Dominion han commended itself to Quebec. The old sentimental cry of attachment to Lnurier failed to sweep\nthe French Canadians and honest\ngovernment won the victory.\nThe Conservative victory has shown\nthat the Liberal party must recast its\npolicies. Reciprocity and n Canadian\nnavy have not commended themselves\nto the electorate. Vapourlngs on the\npart of sentimentalists that the people should \"put their money on the\nOld Cock\" hnve lost their power .The\nscales have fallen from the eyeB of\nthose who formerly supported tho\nLaurier methods of obtaining votes\nand their is now a clear line ol differ\nence between the two parties. Conservatism is the creed of those, who\nwish attachment to the Mother country nnd at the same time demand national develoument along safe and\nsure lines. Liberalism on the other\nhand is based on n minimum of attachment to the Mother Country and\na return to power by violent agitation.\nIt is evident that the electors have\nbecome tired of such Liberal tactics.\nThey want, if the Liberal party is\never again to secure their support, a\nsubstantial programme founded upon\nprogressive lines. As the Liberal\nparty is now in desperate straits\nsuch a programme does not Beem to\nbe ou the horizen and agitation and\nrace appeals are their trump cards.\nHow far the present lender of the\nOpposition is responsible for such a\ncondition, is not known. During the\npast fifteen years he haB always\nshown himself an autocratic leader in\ndealing with the members of his own\nparty, He has loBt much power consequent upon his defeat on September 21. 1911, and it Is now evident\nthat his party ls tossed about by\nconflicting opinions nnd eddying currents of thought. The saner members of the party nre calling for new\npolicies and new leadership. It will\ncome an no surprise that u party convention may be called and a new programme and h new leader .h.,ne\nTie difllculty v. 11] he to chi ce both\nthe policy and the leader.
